First boys emerge from Thailand cave as rescue mission enters final act
CHIANG RAI, Thailand — Rescuers in northern Thailand on Sunday extracted four members of a youth soccer team from the cave where they had been trapped for more than two weeks, signaling the final act of a saga that has gripped the world. Three of the boys were taken to a hospital by helicopter while the fourth was taken by an ambulance, Chiang Rai Gov. Narongsak Osottanakorn said at a news conference Sunday night local time. "We were faster than expected, more successful than I expected, and everyone is happy," he said. As efforts ended for the night, the rescue operation chief said they would resume in 10 to 20 hours because workers "used all the oxygen" and needed to reset their air tanks. Based on that timeframe, rescue operations were set to resume at around 7 a.m. Monday (8 p.m. ET Sunday), but when that time arrived it was not clear if the effort had resumed. Members of the audience broke out in applause when the rescue was announced. The boys traveled more than … [Read more...] about First boys emerge from Thailand cave as rescue mission enters final act
For hire or food, garden sitters save the day during summer
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 6 NEW YORK (AP) — Take my chard, please! The season has come when many home gardeners, their numbers booming since the pandemic began, are being rewarded with fully matured, ready-to-pick vegetables and flowers. It’s also vacation season, and this summer travel is back. How do you maintain your garden and take advantage of all that homegrown goodness during extended trips away? Even experienced gardeners can end up with more tomatoes, beans and zucchini than they’d expected come late summer. Garden sitters are one answer. Some home gardeners hire professionals, while many just rely on neighbors and hope for the best. “It’s really hard to leave the garden,” said Theresa Fiumano-Rhatigan, a longtime home gardener in Brooklyn. She relies on her parents and other nearby relatives as garden sitters during her five weeks each summer in Cape Cod, Massachusetts. … [Read more...] about For hire or food, garden sitters save the day during summer
Mum and newborn baby nearly die at birth despite £15 test that could have saved them
An angry mum has spoken out after her daughter was left fighting for her life seconds after being born - despite her condition being preventable. Preya Vaja has been left with PTSD and post-natal depression after she and her young daughter Uma almost died during childbirth . Both mum and daughter had sepsis caused by Group B Strep - an infection carried by one in four women - and easily detected by a swab test costing just £15. Group B Strep kills one baby a week in the UK and leaves another 50 each year with a life-changing disability. But despite the number of deaths the NHS does not provide the test as part of its routine maternity care. Today a new study in England led by the UKHSA has found that Black and Asian babies face higher rates of group B Strep disease. Preya holding baby Uma in hospital ( Image: Preya Vaja) Uma was in neonatal intensive care ( Image: Preya Vaja) The study, published in medical journal Pediatrics today, found … [Read more...] about Mum and newborn baby nearly die at birth despite £15 test that could have saved them
FNC’s Carlson: ‘Inflation Reduction Act May Be a Classic Example of Misinformation’
Wednesday, FNC host Tucker Carlson opened his broadcast with a scathing critique of the so-called Inflation Reduction Act. According to Carlson, the moniker “inflation reduction” was misinformation, which has been something the Biden administration has proclaimed to be a priority in combatting. Transcript as follows: CARLSON: People say the federal government seems big, maybe bigger than ever. Well, it actually is the largest employer in the world — the Federal government. Nothing else comes close — not Google, not Amazon, not the Communist Party of China — nothing. How many people work for the United States government? Let’s put it this way. There are more than a hundred countries around the world whose total populations (that is, every man, woman and child) are smaller than our Federal workforce — entire countries, many of them. The US government, in other words, is astoundingly large, world historically big, scale without precedent, truly gargantuan. So, what do all … [Read more...] about FNC’s Carlson: ‘Inflation Reduction Act May Be a Classic Example of Misinformation’
Most European Union Women Blame Covid Pandemic for Spike in Gender Violence: Poll
Nearly three out of four European Union women think the COVID-19 pandemic has spurred an increase in physical and psychological violence against them, according to a Eurobarometer poll published on Friday. The poll, commissioned by the European Parliament ahead of Women’s Day on March 8, shows 77% of women in the EU think the pandemic caused a rise in gender violence in their countries, with nine in 10 respondents in Greece and Portugal saying so. Asked how to tackle the problem, 58% of interviewed women said it should be made easier to report gender violence. About a third of EU women said the pandemic had a negative impact on their personal income, according to the poll, which is based on a sample of nearly 27,000 women aged 15 or more from all 27 EU countries. “The results of the Eurobarometer survey confirm what we already know: the COVID-19 pandemic has disproportionately affected women and girls in myriads of ways,” said lawmaker Robert Biedron, who chairs the European … [Read more...] about Most European Union Women Blame Covid Pandemic for Spike in Gender Violence: Poll

‘I had my baby induced to ensure she was a Pisces, I thought I’d be a better mum to her’
Some people are seriously interested in horoscopes, star signs and all things mystical, but not quite to the point of one mum who took things to the next level when she was induced to ensure her child would be the same star sign as her. Inbaal Honigman was so determined to have a Pisces baby that when doctors invited her to choose a date to be induced, she chose the one which would make her daughter a Pisces, not an Aries. The 48-year-old from West Yorkshire is a Pisces herself, and so is her husband, and three of four of her kids are incidentally Pisces too. Inbaal said: "When the first baby was due, I'm a Pisces and my husband is a Pisces and we had planned for our daughter to be a Pisces. "She was conceived in Midsummer which was also Father's Day, and I did some Father's Day magic to conceive her. "So the dream of a full Pisces family was in full swing, and then her due date came and went. "I was still so in love with the idea of the full Pisces family so when I … [Read more...] about ‘I had my baby induced to ensure she was a Pisces, I thought I’d be a better mum to her’
