Georgia election officials dispute film’s voter fraud claims

May 17, 2022 by www.sfgate.com

ATLANTA (AP) — The Republican head of Georgia’s election board said Tuesday a recently released film alleging ballots were illegally collected and dropped off during the 2020 presidential election falsely suggests there were tens of thousands of illegitimate votes in the state. Still, State Election Board Chairman Matt Mashburn promised a “fair” investigation of its claims. “It’s not going to be a witch hunt,” he said at a meeting of the board. “It’s going to be done soberly and with great care by people who know what they’re doing.” The movie, called “2000 Mules,” paints an ominous picture suggesting Democrat-aligned ballot “mules” were supposedly paid to illegally collect and drop off ballots in Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin. It has been praised by former President Donald Trump as exposing “great election fraud,” but election security experts say it is based on faulty assumptions, anonymous accounts and improper analysis of cellphone location data. … [Read more...] about Georgia election officials dispute film’s voter fraud claims

Andrew Gillum says Donald Trump is “embarrassing to democracy” after he makes unfounded Florida election fraud claims

November 9, 2018 by www.newsweek.com

It didn't take long for President Donald Trump to weigh in on Florida's elections, which were believed to be over but have since faced a case of déjà vu as parts of the state scrambled to finish tallying votes days after the election. The president, like GOP Florida Governor Rick Scott and Republican Senator Marco Rubio, has alleged there was fraud committed by local elections officials in South Florida. "Mayor Gillum conceded on Election Day and now Broward County has put him 'back into play.'" Trump tweeted Friday. "Bill Nelson conceded Election - now he's back in play!? This is an embarrassment to our Country and to Democracy!" The president also claimed, without evidence, that Broward County was "probably getting ready to do a 'number,'" on him during the 2016 presidential election but couldn't because he was "winning by so much in Florida." Andrew Gillum, Tallahassee Mayor and Democrat running against former Congressman Ron DeSantis for governor, fired back, saying the … [Read more...] about Andrew Gillum says Donald Trump is “embarrassing to democracy” after he makes unfounded Florida election fraud claims

Californians behind on their rent can still get help. But you need to apply now

March 17, 2022 by www.latimes.com

If you missed rent payments because of the pandemic, the window to apply for state help in paying what you owe has closed. California’s Housing Is Key program was set up to pay all of the rent debt that eligible renters had run up since April 2020. Landlords could apply too if their tenants met the program’s criteria and provided the necessary paperwork. And if a tenant has an application pending, the landlord can’t seek to evict you before July for any rent debt you amassed from March 2020 to March 2022. The state announced in mid-March, however, that the program would stop accepting applications on March 31. Alex Traverso, a spokesman for the state Department of Housing and Community Development, said the program is running short of funds, which is why it’s shutting down. As of March 29, the state had received more than 480,000 completed applications and distributed more than $2.3 billion on behalf of almost 206,000 households. The grants, which can cover unpaid rent and … [Read more...] about Californians behind on their rent can still get help. But you need to apply now

Pennsylvania governor race divides Republicans, unites Dems

This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 10 HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) — As Pennsylvania Republicans prepare to choose a nominee for governor Tuesday, some party officials are twisted in knots over the possibility of a primary victory by a candidate many see as too far to the right to win statewide this fall. Doug Mastriano, a retired U.S. Army colonel and state senator since 2019, has led polls while spending a fraction of the money that some of the other eight candidates listed on the Republican primary ballot have spent. Mastriano recently won the endorsement of Donald Trump after working with the former president to overturn his loss in 2020's election in the presidential battleground state and helping spread Trump’s lies that widespread voter fraud cost him victory. Many party officials urged Trump not to endorse Mastriano, fearing he cannot win over the moderate voters necessary to … [Read more...] about Pennsylvania governor race divides Republicans, unites Dems

Russia Planned a Major Military Overhaul. Ukraine Shows the Result.

May 16, 2022 by www.nytimes.com

Army vehicles were so decrepit that repair crews were stationed roughly every 15 miles. Some officers were so out of shape that the military budgeted $1.5 million to re-size standard uniforms. That was the Russian military more than a decade ago when the country invaded Georgia, according to the defense minister at the time . The shortcomings, big and small, were glaring enough that the Kremlin announced a complete overhaul of the military to build a leaner, more flexible, professional force. But now, almost three months into Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, it is clear the Kremlin fell woefully short of creating an effective fighting machine. Russian forces in Ukraine have underperformed to a degree that has surprised most Western analysts, raising the prospect that President Vladimir V. Putin’s military operation could end in failure. By any measure, despite capturing territory in the south and east, the Russian military has suffered a major blow in Ukraine. It has been … [Read more...] about Russia Planned a Major Military Overhaul. Ukraine Shows the Result.

National Democrats Have ‘Basically Written Off’ Winning in Florida

May 17, 2022 by www.breitbart.com

The news that His Fraudulency Joe Biden will allow people to send money to Cuba essentially means national Democrats have written off Florida as a potential win in the upcoming elections. “On news that the Biden administration plans to ease remittance restrictions for Cuba, it’s financial good news for Western Union & Publix in Miami,” tweeted Marc Caputo, a far-left staffer at the far-left Politico. He adds, “There’ll be lots of opposition from Cuba hardliners here, but Biden folks tell me he (& natl Ds) has basically written off FL anyway.” Biden’s support for the Cuban government comes in stark contrast to the previous administration. Trump shut down these remittances. After all, why should American money prop up Cuba’s left-wing Nazis? This is an important issue among Florida’s Cuban population, who are desperate, for obvious reasons, to see Cuba’s communist regime fall and their loved ones freed. But Joe Biden, who cares about everyone in the world except … [Read more...] about National Democrats Have ‘Basically Written Off’ Winning in Florida

Promoters of the Big Lie want to run our elections. We must stop them | Opinion

May 17, 2022 by www.newsweek.com

While there are many issues front and center for voters as they head to the polls for the primaries over the next few months, it is time for all of us to understand just what's at stake for our democracy. In Colorado, the county clerk running for Secretary of State was recently barred by a judge from overseeing the 2022 elections and is under indictment on criminal election-tampering charges . In Georgia, a candidate for governor continues to make the absurd claim that the last election was "rigged and stolen." In Michigan, a conspiracy-pushing lawyer has already earned the state Republican Party's endorsement for attorney general. All three are election deniers. They're running for top state offices that will oversee future elections by campaigning on lies and conspiracies about the 2020 election. These aren't fringe candidates, and they are far from outliers this cycle. Election deniers are running up and down the ballot this year from coast to coast, according to a … [Read more...] about Promoters of the Big Lie want to run our elections. Comedian Bill Burr defends Scientology, asks “Where are the bodies”

May 17, 2022 by www.newsweek.com

Comedian Bill Burr has lashed out at critics of Scientology for giving the religion "more s**t than it deserves." Burr defended Scientology during the latest episode of his Monday Morning Podcast . The comedian made the remarks while speaking about a recent trip to Sacramento, California—a city that he noted had "a bad reputation" before recalling walking by two bail bonds offices and a Scientology building within three blocks of one another. "Scientology, I don't know, am I outta my mind? I feel like it gets more s**t than it deserves," Burr said before asking his audience what they would "do if you found out I secretly joined," followed by laughter. "No, I think it gets more s**t than it deserves," he continued. "You know, for as f**ked up as they say it is, for as cult-y as it is, I got one question: Where are the bodies? Where are they?" Burr went on to compare the alleged transgressions of Scientology—which critics have accused of intimidation, harassment and fraud, … [Read more...] about Comedian Bill Burr defends Scientology, asks “Where are the bodies”

This nominee for U.S. attorney could fire special counsel Robert Mueller

September 7, 2017 by www.newsweek.com

Robert J. Higdon Jr. is one of 11 presidential nominees scheduled to appear before the Senate Judiciary Committee on Thursday. But he is the only one from that list who, if confirmed, could decide the fate of the special counsel investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential election and possible coordination with the campaign of President Donald Trump. Higdon, who goes by Bobby, is Trump's pick for U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of North Carolina, one of 94 districts that fall under the Department of Justice. Because of an executive order that Trump signed in March , the person who fills the position in that particular district joins the line of succession for overseeing the Justice Department. If Trump calls for the removal of special counsel Robert Mueller and enough officials recuse themselves, resign in protest or lose their jobs before carrying out the order, the decision could become Higdon's.
