SCOTS on a flight from Croatia were filmed going wild when their pilot announced England had crashed out of the World Cup. Cheers and screams of joy were heard on an easyJet flight into Glasgow last night as passengers toasted our defeat. The Three Lions fought like warriors in Moscow but lost their semi-final 2-1 to Croatia in extra time. Scottish fans, who haven’t had anything to watch this summer, were over the moon when Mario Mandžukić denied Gareth Southgate’s men their first World Cup final since 1966. The video, shared by tweeter Calum Shepherd, infuriated England fans who accused their Scottish counterparts of being “jealous”. Others reminded the Scots that their football team has not qualified for a major tournament in 20 years, since France 98. One fan fumed: “Haven’t quailed for a major tournament for a while but then again I’d hop on the band wagon if my top league was the equivalent to the English league2” Another … [Read more...] about Scots on flight to Croatia go wild when pilot announces England have been knocked out of World Cup
France 98 world cup
Steven Goff, The Washington Post Published 11:17 am PDT, Sunday, July 8, 2018 MOSCOW - When World Cup players and coaches are asked to explain an almost inexplicable situation or outcome, the common response comes with a shrug and, in various languages, an unsatisfying response: "That's football." What has unfolded here over three weeks can be neither explained in full nor casually dismissed as something that has happened for reasons only known to the soccer gods. That's football? More like, that's not normal. There are, though, some ways to make sense of it all. FOR a man who refuses to fly, Dennis Bergkamp has done a pretty good job of piloting Holland into the semi-finals of the World Cup. He's scored three goals already in France 98, claiming a Dutch national record of 36 in the process. He struck the vital 90thminute winner against Argentina – a goal of such exquisite touch and ruthless execution that it could well prove to be the best individual effort of the tournament. He has been the inspiration behind so much of what has been a revelation about this Dutch side. And tonight in Marseille he comes up against Ronaldo – the Brazilian star who cost £20million when he moved from Barcelona to Inter Milan, and who at 21 is the brightest talent in the soccer firmament. It is not fanciful to suggest that they will be competing for more than a place in the World Cup final – they will also be playing for the right to be called the world's greatest footballer. Their showdown promises to be the most intriguing battle of France … [Read more...] about France ’98: So who is the best soccer player in the world?
Denmark coach Åge Hareide on Monday. Photo: AP Photo/David Vincent/Ritzau Scanpix Denmark face France on Tuesday needing a point from their final game to be sure of a place in the last 16, as they bid to reach the knockout rounds of a World Cup for the first time since 2002. Coach Åge Hareide said the Danes would go in search of victory, resisting the dangerous temptation to look to settle for a draw in the match, which kicks off at 4pm Danish time at the Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow. "I know one point will be enough but that's not a good way to start the match," Norwegian Hareide said. "If you put that into your players' heads there will be passiveness in the team and that's not good." "It will be a tough match tomorrow," Hareide added. "The players worked very hard in the first two matches. "We haven't done our best in terms of play but we've worked very hard for the points. We can't ask for more." Group ARussia - Opponents of Russia's national side might face two identical players: the “terrible” identical twins Aleksei and Anton Miranchuk who have been playing together in the national squad since autumn 2017. The family traces its origins back to the Cossacks, independent horsemen forces who guarded Tsarist Russia's borders and started off from the local club of their hometown, Slavyansk-on-Kuban, close to the Crimea peninsula, before joining Spartak Moscow. Russia started their preparations for their first World Cup on home soil - with a training camp in Austria's Stubai Valley. The location of the training camp is becoming well known in international football circles - France stayed there before their own European Championship two years ago. And if Russia are looking for a lucky omen ahead of the tournament, Spain stayed in the Stubai Valley before Euro 2008, which they won. Egypt - Egypt the dominant force in African football in the last 10 years, they have … [Read more...] about Did you know this about the World Cup’s 32 teams?
