IPL 2022, MI vs DC | Rishabh Pant is right choice for captaincy, no doubt in my mind: Delhi Capitals coach Ricky Ponting
Delhi Capitals coach Ricky Ponting on May 21 backed Rishabh Pant after his strategic blunder cost the team a spot in the play-offs, saying he is still young and learning the ropes of captaincy and remains the right choice for the job. With Mumbai Indians at 95 for 3 in 14.3 overs while chasing a target of 160, Pant made a strategic blunder as he refused to go for DRS after Tim David nicked the first ball of his innings and the onfield umpire didn’t give him out. It came back to haunt DC as David slammed 34 runs off just 11 balls with the help of two boundaries and four sixes to take the game out of DC’s grasp. “Absolutely, no doubt in my mind that Rishabh even in the last season he was the right choice for captain. Rishabh did a terrific job with the team after he took over from Shreyas [Iyer] after he injured his shoulders,” Ponting said during the press conference after DC lost by five wickets against MI. “...he is just a young man and still learning captaincy. Being captain … [Read more...] about IPL 2022, MI vs DC | Rishabh Pant is right choice for captaincy, no doubt in my mind: Delhi Capitals coach Ricky Ponting
Nuggets Journal: If it’s Tim Connelly or Calvin Booth, Denver’s roster still needs fixing
The warts aren’t going anywhere. No matter if current team president Tim Connelly is overseeing the Nuggets or the job is left to presumed successor Calvin Booth should Connelly depart, Denver is on the precipice of championship contention. But they aren’t there yet. The hardest part about the timing of Connelly’s dalliance with Minnesota is that the decisions coming this summer are the ones that might make the difference between maximizing Nikola Jokic’s title window and winning a championship, or not. If it’s Connelly, who’s been at the helm since 2013 and is known for his loyalty, he’d still likely have to make uncomfortable decisions. Those choices might involve Will Barton, the longest-tenured Nugget who’s long been a favorite of Connelly’s, or Monte Morris, one of Connelly’s favorite players in the NBA, let alone Denver. If Connelly is still in charge, upgrading the defense would be a priority and moving one or both of their respective contracts might be mandatory to … [Read more...] about Nuggets Journal: If it’s Tim Connelly or Calvin Booth, Denver’s roster still needs fixing
We should be talking to our girls about periods earlier
Period. Time of the month. Menses. Whatever you call it, it’s a fact of life and, for many of us, unavoidable. Why does it carry such shame and embarrassment? Why are we encouraged to conceal it? Even now, despite being adults and amid so much talk of female empowerment, discussing periods is still embarrassing for a lot of people . Brands have even come up with whole campaigns to make tampons look like sweets, rather than the blood-soaking mechanism they actually are, in order to spare us and the unassuming male across the train aisle the humiliation when it falls out of our bag. Is this shame linked to the time and way in which we learn about periods ? If so, the time has come to change things. I was eight years old when I got my menarche (first period). I’d grown a lot that summer and started wearing glasses so, with two decades worth of retrospect, it now seems obvious this may have been coming – but no one told me what to expect. Instead, I was shocked by … [Read more...] about We should be talking to our girls about periods earlier
The Problem With Books About Urban-Education Heroes
The storyline is a familiar one: An idealistic new teacher, full of hope and enthusiasm, embarks on a career at a tough urban school. The plot then takes one of two typical turns: Either the fervent novice, facing the unyielding and ever-increasing pressures of the classroom, leaves teaching and emerges with insights on improving urban schools—or the newbie, due solely to individual moxie and an untiring work ethic, achieves seemingly miraculous results with a hard-to-teach student population. One of the latest iterations of this all-too-common narrative is found in a new memoir on teaching that has seen its share of plaudits and detractors . In The Battle for Room 314: My Year of Hope and Despair in a New York City High School , Ed Boland recounts his brief stint in 2006 teaching ninth-grade history at Henry Street School for International Studies on Manhattan’s Lower East Side. Boland encounters numerous challenges in teaching children with what he describes as “ … [Read more...] about The Problem With Books About Urban-Education Heroes
Calcutta HC cancels minister’s daughter’s appointment, directs to return salary
The Calcutta High Court on Friday directed that Ankita Adhikary, daughter of West Bengal Minister of State for Education Paresh Chandra Adhikary, be removed from the post of teacher in a State-run school and also instructed her to return the salary received from the school. Justice Abhijit Gangopadhyay also directed that Ms. Adhikary will not be treated as a teacher and she or any person on her behalf will not be allowed inside the school premises. On May 17, in an order, Justice Gangopadhyay had pointed at irregularities in the appointment of Ms. Adhikary and directed the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to register an FIR against the minister and his daughter. The FIR was registered on May 19. Justice Gangopadhyay, in his order on Friday, said that the post to which Ms. Adhikary was appointed shall be earmarked for the petitioner Babita Sarkar. Ms. Adhikari will deposit the salary received for 41 months to the Registrar of Calcutta High Court in two installments in June and … [Read more...] about Calcutta HC cancels minister’s daughter’s appointment, directs to return salary
Mum’s fight for survival as cost of living crisis leaves family unable to make ends meet
The tears flow readily as Gemma Carlsson counts out the last of this week’s money. It’s coming to the end of the month, so she’s down to a pile of small change. “It’s not where I want to be,” she whispers. “I hate it. It feels like I’m getting depression just from being here. It’s damp, it’s falling apart. The kids hate it too.” She’s sitting in a room with damp walls, an ancient TV that only plays children’s channels, and the tell-tale smell of rat faeces wafting in from behind the sparse units in the kitchen beyond. Home for Gemma, 38, and her children, aged 20, 15 and 10, is a three-bedroom council house on Middlesbrough’s Grove Hill estate. The family have lived there – always in abject poverty – for the past 12 years. Gemma’s deprivation is what the experts classify as “in-work poverty” in Britain's biggest unemployment blackspot She earns £456 a month and gets £665 in Universal Credit . Yet the cost of living crisis means her £400 a month food bill – which … [Read more...] about Mum’s fight for survival as cost of living crisis leaves family unable to make ends meet
GPs to vote on changing opening hours to a daily 9am to 5pm to reduce ‘strain’
A move to ease the work burden on GPs by having a 9am to 5pm day is to be voted on by doctors with some claiming “urgent action is needed”. Avon Local Medical Committee (LMC) is to table a motion that would see two-and-half hours taken off GPs’ days with typical practices now running from 8am to 6.30pm. "Urgent action is needed to manage the imbalance between doctors' workload and their workforce," said the motion. The call for a 9am until 5pm job is part of a desire for “credible agreed workload measures”. The motion wants GP leaders to "further develop, publicise and strongly advocate worked-up plans to introduce safe workload limits for general practice that do not constitute a breach of contract." The motion has stated that GPs are under heavy strain ( Image: Getty Images) GPs are also concerned about the amount of abuse that they are having to deal with and they are set to debate calls for a change in GMS regulations to allow the immediate removal from … [Read more...] about GPs to vote on changing opening hours to a daily 9am to 5pm to reduce ‘strain’
