Florida judge hears arguments on state’s new abortion law
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 12 TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — Reproductive health providers on Monday asked a Florida judge to block a new 15 week abortion ban from taking effect this week, arguing that the state constitution guarantees access to the procedure. Planned Parenthood and other health centers are seeking a temporary emergency injunction to stop the law approved this year by Florida’s GOP-controlled legislature and Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis. It is set to go into effect Friday. Leon Circuit Judge John C. Cooper began hearing arguments in the case days after the U.S. Supreme Court ended federal protections for abortion by overturning the landmark 1973 Roe v. Wade decision. Florida’s law would prohibit abortions after 15 weeks, with exceptions if the procedure is necessary to save a mother’s life, prevent serious injury or if the fetus has a fatal … [Read more...] about Florida judge hears arguments on state’s new abortion law

Grandma saves pizza delivery man after he’s shot
A grandmother provided help and care for a pizza delivery man who was shot several times Saturday evening in Joppa, Maryland. According to a release issued by the Harford County Sheriff's Office, officers received a report of a shooting. They found the victim, 24-year-old Da'Shawn Betterson, in a townhouse with several gunshot wounds to his lower body. Officials provided medical aid to Betterson, who was airlifted to a trauma center for non-life-threatening injuries. CBS affiliate station WJZ reported that Karen Rollins ordered dinner for her grandchildren. "I looked outside," she told the outlet. "I saw the pizza box, so I opened the door to get the food, and there was a young man out there jumping around." When Rollins asked Betterson if he was OK, she said he asked if she could help him, telling her that he had been shot. She took him into her home and called the police, who guided her through how to provide medical attention until officials arrived. The Strange Tale of Tina Peters
GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. — Just six weeks before the 2020 presidential election — game day for vote-counting bureaucrats — Tina Peters was so proud of her operation at the Mesa County clerk’s office that she invited a film crew in to show it off. There’s no chance of mishap here, she boasted. “The Russians can’t hack into and start casting votes for someone,” she said, as a few in the office chuckled. By May 2021, it was Ms. Peters, not the Russians, who had helped engineer an audacious breach of voting machines, according to an indictment charging her with seven felonies. Ms. Peters arranged to copy sensitive election software from county voting machines in an attempt to prove the 2020 presidential election was rigged, according to court records. Prosecutors said she committed identity theft and criminal impersonation, and violated the duties of her office in the process. Ms. Peters has pleaded not guilty. The strange tale of Tina Peters — a once-ordinary public servant … [Read more...] about The Strange Tale of Tina Peters
Dyslexia And The New Science Of Reading
The first thing Kathryn Nicholas will tell you about her 11-year-old son Jason is that he's a bright, curious kid who can build elaborate machines out of Legos and remember the code names and payloads of bombers. "He has a phenomenal desire to see how things work," she says proudly. But reading, for Jason, was a train wreck. In first grade he was assigned to special-education classes with three mildly retarded children. Two years later, despite extra help, he still couldn't decipher a sentence, and his mother was worried that he would soon become so discouraged that he would give up trying. Then she heard about Virginia Wise Berninger, an educational psychologist at the University of Washington who studies dyslexia, a disorder that makes learning to read extremely difficult. As part of her ongoing research, Berninger tested Jason and then invited him to a summer program for dyslexic boys. The kids didn't just play letter games. They did science experiments, studied biodiversity, met … [Read more...] about Dyslexia And The New Science Of Reading

Tech Giants and Industry Leaders Respond to US Supreme Court’s Controversial Abortion Judgement
The US Supreme Court last week overturned the Roe v Wade precedent that for decades guaranteed a woman’s constitutional right to an abortion. A draft opinion leaked months ago had led to fears that the landmark judgment could be overturned and last Friday, the largely conservative US Supreme Court, by a 6-3 majority, overturned the 1973 judgment that made abortion a constitutional right. As trigger bans came into effect in most red states, tech giant Google discussed the ruling in a company-wide email and explained that employees in affected states can ask for transfer without providing a justification. “This is a profound change for the country that deeply effects so many of us, especially women. Googlers can also apply for relocation without justification, and those overseeing this process will be aware of the situation,” Google said in the email, as reported by CNBC. According to a report by Tech Crunch, a spokesperson for Microsoft stated that the corporation will do … [Read more...] about Tech Giants and Industry Leaders Respond to US Supreme Court’s Controversial Abortion Judgement
‘I just couldn’t be silent’: How American women decided the 2020 presidential race
ARCHBALD, Pa (Reuters) - Marygrace Vadala's 82-year-old mother had been a fan of President Donald Trump since his days hosting the reality TV show "The Apprentice." She enthusiastically voted for him in 2016. But in the first weeks of the coronavirus pandemic, as the two watched daily White House briefings, Vadala's mom - Grace Webber - voiced her first doubts. "Why isn't he listening to the medical experts?" Vadala, a 48-year-old home care nurse, recalled Webber asking. Weeks later, Webber landed in the hospital with a gastrointestinal bleed. She soon contracted the coronavirus, spending nearly a month on a ventilator. In May, Vadala, a devout Catholic, said goodbye to Webber over FaceTime, clutching her mother's rosary beads. Vadala, who lives in a suburb of Scranton, Pennsylvania, had been a Republican all her life. But she concluded Trump lacked the "integrity and trustworthiness and responsibility" she was raised to value, and she wanted him out. She became a prominent … [Read more...] about ‘I just couldn’t be silent’: How American women decided the 2020 presidential race
In wake of Roe reversal, some American Jews see attack on religious liberty
The Supreme Court decision reversing Roe v. Wade answered the prayers of conservative Christians across the U.S. who rallied against the landmark 1973 ruling for nearly half a century. But many American Jews are dismayed, and some Jewish leaders view restrictions on reproductive rights as an attack on religious liberty. In statements following the release of Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization, the ruling that overruled Roe, organizations such as the American Jewish Committee , the Anti-Defamation League , Hillel International and the Women's Rabbinic Network expressed deep anguish. "In this moment, our feelings are best embodied by Numbers 11:10 : 'God became exceedingly angry; and Moses despaired.' ... We stand with generations of Jewish scholars who state clearly and unequivocally that abortion access is a Jewish value," the Women’s Rabbinic Network said . The decision to sweep away Roe and about 50 years of legal precedent, the group went on to say, … [Read more...] about In wake of Roe reversal, some American Jews see attack on religious liberty
