The stereotypes about cats and dogs are well documented, from the popular phrase " fighting like cats and dogs ," to portrayals in cartoons and movies. But this cat and dog pair are bucking the trend. Eight-year-old shorthair cat Nikita and 5-year-old Australian Shepherd dog Bleu have been best buddies for almost five years. Wrestling, playing, and cuddling the day away together. Living with their owners Alene Husson and her husband Gerry in Indian Lake, New York, Husson told us the story of these unusual friends. "After our last Australian Shepherd died, we decided to get a cat because they're so much easier to take care of," she explained. "But we found that even though the cat was wonderful it just didn't fulfill the need for a dog. So we decided to get Bleu." The Animal Humane Society reports that: "Despite the stereotype, many dogs and cats learn to live together peacefully," they advise: "Be patient and take the introduction process slowly, but know that whether or not … [Read more...] about Australian Shepherd becomes best buddies with cat whose owner died

Australian who ‘wasn’t sure where he was’ lucky to be alive after bite from highly venomous snake hiding in his car
An Australian man was rushed to hospital last week after being bitten by a deadly snake that slithered into his car while he went for a swim. The incident occurred at Back Creek Park in Millmerran, a town in the Toowoomba Region of Queensland, after the victim left his car's door open and was attacked after returning to the vehicle, 7News reported . The man, 54, has not been named by law enforcement. After being bitten, the victim attempted to contact the local emergency services but "wasn't too sure where he was," Sergeant Steven Ryan told 7News. The man, who was with his pet dog at the time, made a makeshift tourniquet but was only saved after another driver spotted his vehicle's hazard lights had been switched on. The victim was found lying by the roadside and then airlifted to Millmerran Hospital. He was administered anti-venom and is expected to survive. Russians line up for McDonald’s as it leaves, mirroring when chain opened
Long lines are forming outside of McDonald's restaurants in Russia ahead of the company's nationwide exit, mirroring a time when eager consumers first gathered for the fast-food chain's arrival in Moscow over 30 years ago. McDonald's announced this week that it will sell its 850 restaurants in Russia due to the ongoing war in Ukraine. The company temporarily shut down its businesses due to the conflict in March, but it said Monday that its overall presence in Russia is no longer "consistent with McDonald's values." The move marks the first time the fast-food chain has ever left a major global market. The company said it will seek a local buyer who will employ its 62,000 workers currently in Russia, and that it will continue to pay those employees until a deal is made. However, the new owner will no longer be able to use the McDonald's name, logo, branding or menu. Across social media, videos have emerged showing Russians lined up to grab a final meal at one the few restaurants … [Read more...] about Russians line up for McDonald’s as it leaves, mirroring when chain opened
“I uncover hidden UFO files. Congress is finally listening”
I first heard about the U.S. Congress hearing on UFOs the day the news of it broke in early May 2022. The first hearing of its kind in 50 years, on May 17 the House Intelligence Committee's subcommittee on Counterterrorism, Counterintelligence and Counterproliferation will discuss unidentified aerial phenomena (UAPs), or UFOs to the rest of us. I knew there were rumors that it may one day happen, but I had thought we were another year out from that, given current world events and the political climate. But it sure was exciting to finally see such an important issue wind up on the calendar of U.S. Congress. I first became interested in the topic of UFOs back when I was a teenager. After seeing all sorts of stories in the news, I thought I would seek out government and military documents. I was 15, and thought perhaps I could get some answers, even though I knew there would be some level of obfuscation. As I fought for previously classified records under the Freedom of Information … [Read more...] about “I uncover hidden UFO files. Congress is finally listening”
“Women of color lead and it’s a problem”: How Colorado’s last bill of 2022 died
The very last bill to be voted on in Colorado’s 2022 legislative session was designed to make sure the state never lets another child experience what Lorenzo Montoyawent through. Montoya was 14 years old in 2000 when he was taken into questioning by Denver police detectives who suspected him in the killing of a Skinner Middle School teacher named Emily Johnson. He didn’t kill her . Again and again, that’s what he told detectives. But over a period of hours, first with Montoya’s mom present and later alone with the child, the police planted a narrative in the child’s mind. They claimed they’d already retrieved fingerprints, shoe prints and hair samples to back it up. Confused and under enormous pressure, Montoya relented and gave a coerced confession. He was convicted of murder and spent the rest of his childhood and most of his 20s incarcerated, before being exonerated in 2014. It is legal in Colorado and all states but Oregon, Illinois and Utah for police to lie to … [Read more...] about “Women of color lead and it’s a problem”: How Colorado’s last bill of 2022 died
In Buffalo, Biden to confront the racism he’s vowed to fight
By CHRIS MEGERIAN WASHINGTON (AP) — When Joe Biden talks about his decision to run against President Donald Trump in 2020, the story always starts with Charlottesville. He says it was the men with torches shouting bigoted slogans that drove him to join what he calls the “battle for the soul of America.” Now Biden is facing the latest deadly manifestation of hatred after a white supremacist targeted Black people with an assault rifle at a supermarket in Buffalo, New York, and left 10 people dead, the most lethal racist attack since he took office. The president and first lady Jill Biden are to visit the city on Tuesday, where their first stop will be a makeshift memorial outside the supermarket. They’re also expected to meet privately with families of the victims, first responders and local officials before the president delivers public remarks. In a speech at a nearby community center, Biden plans to call for stricter gun laws and urge Americans to reject racism and embrace … [Read more...] about In Buffalo, Biden to confront the racism he’s vowed to fight

Alice Cutter: Ex-Miss Hitler entrant among four ‘diehards’ jailed for belonging to banned far-right group
A former Miss Hitler beauty pageant entrant and her ex-partner have been jailed for a total of more than eight years for belonging to banned far-right group National Action (NA). Alice Cutter was sentenced to three years and Mark Jones to five-and-a-half-years at Birmingham Crown Court for being members of the terrorist organisation. The pair, from Sowerby Bridge in Yorkshire, were convicted in March alongside two other neo-Nazi "diehards", Garry Jack and Connor Scothern. Jack faces four-and-a-half years in prison, while Scothern was sentenced to 18 months' detention. Jurors were shown messages in which Cutter, 23, joked about gassing synagogues, using a Jewish person's head as a football, and exclaiming "Rot in hell, bitch", after hearing of the 2016 murder of MP Jo Cox by far-right sympathiser Thomas Mair. Magic looking for luck to turn their way in NBA’s draft lottery
The Orlando Magic know as well as any other team the luck and misfortune that can come with the NBA’s draft lottery. They’re hoping luck will turn their way for the first time in over a decade during Tuesday’s 38th installment of the lottery. The lottery will start at 8 p.m. in Chicago and will be broadcast on ESPN. The Magic were on the receiving end of a lot of luck in their infancy, winning back-to-back No. 1 picks in 1992 and ‘93 — selections that led to Orlando drafting Shaquille O’Neal and acquiring Penny Hardaway, the linchpins of the Magic’s early success in the mid-90s. The Magic later won the ‘04 lottery, leading to the drafting of Dwight Howard, the backbone of six consecutive playoffs appearances, including the 2009 Finals. Since then, the Magic have either stayed at or fallen from their pre-lottery positioning. While it isn’t known if this year’s draft class will have the kind of franchise-changing prospects that could propel the Magic to similar success … [Read more...] about Magic looking for luck to turn their way in NBA’s draft lottery
