“Great Replacement Theory” has inspired 4 mass shootings in recent years

May 16, 2022 by www.newsweek.com

A racist ideology is being investigated as the motivating factor in a supermarket massacre in Buffalo, New York, that left 10 people dead on Saturday. Authorities say Payton Gendron, a white 18-year-old from Conklin, New York, carried out an act of "racially motivated violent extremism" when he opened fire at the Tops Friendly Market. Most of the victims were Black. Authorities said they were investigating the attack, which the shooter livestreamed on Twitch until the company shut the broadcast down, as a potential federal hate crime or act of domestic terrorism. A 180-page manifesto , purportedly authored by Gendron, said the attack was motivated by the "Great Replacement Theory"—a racist conspiracy theory that claims white people are being replaced by minorities and people of color. The ideology fueled the deadly 2017 rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, where white supremacists chanted "Jews will not replace us." The belief has also incited a string of mass killings in … [Read more...] about “Great Replacement Theory” has inspired 4 mass shootings in recent years

Hearing threat to Roe vs. Wade, I thought of my gay marriage — and Jim Obergefell’s fight

May 16, 2022 by www.latimes.com

I’ve thought about Jim Obergefell often since we first spoke nine years ago, after his historic marriage to his husband on an airport tarmac outside Baltimore. He’s come to mind mostly during big moments in my own life as a gay man in America. I thought of Jim and his late husband, John Arthur, when I first considered proposing to my husband, Aaron, and the promises — in sickness and in health, till death do us part — that I’d be making. I thought of Jim and John again when Aaron and I exchanged vows in San Francisco City Hall in 2018, with our families around us and the bust of Harvey Milk nearby . We chose City Hall for its beauty and ease, but could have been anywhere in the country — a right Jim and John won us by overcoming a mountain of obstacles just to reach that tarmac. Advertisement I thought of Jim again last week, around the time I was emailing our lawyers about the next set of paperwork to file in our pursuit of U.S. citizenship for Aaron, who is … [Read more...] about Hearing threat to Roe vs. Wade, I thought of my gay marriage — and Jim Obergefell’s fight

Young children can easily see disturbing content on YouTube despite age restrictions

March 15, 2019 by www.independent.co.uk

The YouTube video starts with a popular British children's cartoon character, Peppa Pig , introducing herself and her family, but there are signs of trouble almost immediately. During the ninth second, Peppa's mother opens her mouth and shouts, "Smoke weed!" The video - a doctored version of a real Peppa episode - deteriorates from there. Over five minutes, there are explosions and racial and homophobic slurs, culminating with Peppa and her parents in dark sunglasses smoking marijuana as rapper Snoop Dogg dances nearby. Since it was uploaded in 2015, the altered video, which has no age restrictions, has been viewed more than 1.5 million times. After years of vowing to police inappropriate content, YouTube continues to deliver violent imagery, drug references, sexually-suggestive sequences and foul, racially-charged language in clips that reach children at a troubling pace, say researchers, parents and consumer groups. YouTube's recommendation algorithm, they say, … [Read more...] about Young children can easily see disturbing content on YouTube despite age restrictions

Alito says overturning Roe gives women a voice on abortion. In the South, it’s not that simple.

May 16, 2022 by www.nbcnews.com

In his leaked draft Supreme Court opinion, Justice Samuel Alito argues that overturning Roe v. Wade would allow “women on both sides of the abortion issue to seek to affect the legislative process.” If women in a post-Roe era don’t like state laws that restrict abortion access, or laws that preserve the right to have an abortion, Alito envisions a world in which they can step up and change them. Women can vote, he pointed out, and often do so in higher numbers than men. They can lobby and run for office. But advocates for voting access and civil rights say that Alito’s depiction does not account for the parts of the country, particularly in the South, where laws make it harder for the poor and voters of color to cast their ballots, and where racially polarized voting can make it more difficult for abortion rights candidates to gain ground. How states will proceed if Roe v. Wade is overturned May 3, 2022 02:35 Southern states … [Read more...] about Alito says overturning Roe gives women a voice on abortion. The 6 most explosive pieces of evidence against Amber Heard so far

May 16, 2022 by www.newsweek.com

As the Johnny Depp and Amber Heard defamation trial continues, both sides continue to present scathing evidence against the other. The former married couple returned to the Fairfax County court in Virginia on Monday , May 16 for day 16 of the trial. Depp is suing Heard for $50 million in loss of earnings after Heard wrote a 2018 op-ed stating she was the survivor of domestic abuse. The article never mentioned Depp by name, but his team has argued the insinuation resulted in extensive financial losses and damaged his profitability as an actor. The trial began on April 11 and Depp's legal team has already mounted their case, calling on witness testimony and physical evidence to show that Depp was the wronged party. Heard's team began their making case to the jury on May 4 and will continue to do so in the coming days and weeks. Pittsburgh Tree of Life Synagogue rabbi warned of need for gun control before shooting: “Where are our leaders?”

October 27, 2018 by www.newsweek.com

Three months before Pittsburgh's Tree of Life Synagogue became the latest target of a deadly mass shooting, the rabbi leading the congregation warned of the need for gun control laws, lamenting the lack of action from the country's leaders. Multiple casualties in addition to six wounded, among them four police officers, were reported after a shooter opened fire in the synagogue in Pittsburgh's Squirrel Hill neighborhood Saturday morning. "Despite continuous calls for sensible gun control and mental health care, our elected leaders in Washington knew that it would fade away in time," Rabbi Jeffrey Myers wrote in a blog post in July. "Unless there is a dramatic turnaround in the mid-term elections, I fear that the status quo will remain unchanged, and school shootings will resume. I shouldn't have to include in my daily morning prayers that God should watch over my wife and daughter, both teachers, and keep them safe. Where are our leaders?" A suspect was apprehended following the … [Read more...] about Pittsburgh Tree of Life Synagogue rabbi warned of need for gun control before shooting: “Where are our leaders?”
