Following the school shooting at Robb Elementary school in Uvalde, Texas, this week parents have been confronted with the issue of how to talk to their children about it. Newsweek spoke to Linda Reddy, a professor in the School Psychology Doctoral Program, and Maurice Elias, a professor of psychology and director of the Rutgers Social-Emotional and Character Development Lab about the tough questions ahead for parents. Both experts emphasized that parents should not shy away from the opportunity to reassure their children and connect with them following this tragic event. The pair also reflected on the mental state of Americans, changes that can have a positive influence on society, ways to potentially prevent future incidents, and how to deal with the grief and fear following nationally significant tragedies. How to Have the Conversation "[The how to talk your kids about it] answer is a little different depending on how close you are to the situation, Elias said. Woman applauded for fiery response to jab from “child level” brother-in-law
Members of a popular internet forum were quick to defend one woman who recounted her brutal takedown of her hypercritical brother-in-law. In a viral Reddit post published on r/AmITheA**hole, Redditor u/Achievementall (otherwise referred to as the original poster, or OP) said she came under verbal attack at a family dinner and had no choice but to respond with the same kind of fervor and vitriol. Titled, "[Am I the a**hole] for my response after my [brother-in-law] told me I'm 35 and still don't know what I want?"] the post has received nearly 9,000 votes and 1,300 comments in the last ten hours. Writing that she is the oldest of four, the original poster said all of her siblings are married with children, but explained that she is childless and not currently in a relationship. Bond with your baby through massage
Babies love to be touched. It is one of the senses that develops even before they are born, and one of the best ways for parents to quickly bond with their little ones. Massage is a form of skin-to-skin contact that helps improve the bond between parents and infants. This is as it helps to engender trust, especially in the first few years of a child’s life. Both fathers and mothers should also engage in other forms of physical contact, such as cuddling, hugging and rocking their newborns. Big benefits Massage is a primal form of intimacy between a mother and her baby. One of its benefits is that it helps stimulate maternal feelings, as well as the release of the hormone oxytocin. This hormone is usually secreted before pregnancy, during birth and later as mum comes into physical contact with baby. It is responsible for triggering various physiological functions and emotions such as happiness, attraction, love and affection. Another benefit is that touch also helps … [Read more...] about Bond with your baby through massage

Case against Vedic varsity Registrar
The Alipiri police have registered a case against Sri Venkateswara Vedic University Registrar Radhe Shyam under Prohibition of Child Marianne (Amendment) Act 2016, for getting his minor son married off to a minor girl. The minor girl’s parents, Venkateswarlu and Sravani Kumari, were also booked for the alleged offence. Lynching & the law
The Supreme Court order calling for a special law to deal with lynching sends a strong message about the growing phenomenon of mob violence. From vigilante violence targeting cattle traders in the name of cow protection, it has taken a new turn. While the former was organised vigilantism, the recent spate of killings seemingly comprises impulsive and unplanned acts of violence, fuelled by rumour and panic-inducing social media messaging. Last year the apex court reminded the Centre and the States they cannot remain silent while vigilantes take the law into their own hands in the name of cow protection. It asked all States to appoint nodal officers in each district to curb mobs. While the incidence of lynching and violence committed by self-styled gau rakshaks appear to have reduced since then, the killing and attacks on those mistaken to be child-kidnappers have had a disquieting rise. The police say the circulation of videos and other messages about child-lifters through … [Read more...] about Lynching & the law
The difficult search for answers after Uvalde | Opinion
I find myself more shaken and stricken after this week's latest mass shooting, the elementary school massacre in Uvalde, Texas, that saw 19 children and two teachers slain in cold blood, than I did after other mass shootings in recent years. Part of that is biographical: As an ex-Texan, the son of an elementary school teacher and the owner of a rifle made by the same manufacturer as was the apparent murder weapon, this just hit home a little closer. And part of that, of course, is the sheer nature of the evil incarnate the likes of which decides to go shoot up a schoolhouse. The palpable nature of that profound evil in our midst is yet the latest reminder of the truism, contrary to modern convention though that truism may be, that man is by his nature inclined toward iniquity. As God Himself says in Genesis 8:21 , "The imagination of man's heart is evil from his youth." Naturally inclined toward tradition, conservatives—if perhaps no one else—intuit this. As the great conservative … [Read more...] about The difficult search for answers after Uvalde | Opinion
