A huge underwater volcano has erupted deep within the Pacific Ocean sending plumes of water towards the surface seen from outer space. NASA satellite images captured the magnificent explosion of the Kavachi volcano, nicknamed Sharkano. A large plume of discoloured water can be seen emerging from the underwater volcano, which lies 15 miles south of Vangunu Island. Kavachi got its name from the sea creatures that are able to live within its harsh conditions and live deep within the ocean among floating fragments of rock. Scientists became familiar with the volcano in a 2015 oceanic study. Their findings revealed how fish and sharks can survive in the hot, sulphur infused, acidic waters surrounding the volcano. The Tiruppur City Police on Tuesday arrested four men on charges of stealing ₹2 crore from the residence of a businessman in the city last year. The accused were found to have purchased houses and vehicles with the stolen cash, investigations revealed. Police sources said that the accused were construction workers and were identified as M. Sathish (29), his younger brother Sakthi (24) along with their acquaintances S. Damodaran (30) and R. Radhakrishnan (53). They seized a car, two motorcycles, ₹16 lakh cash, gold jewellery weighing 30 sovereigns and property documents of four houses that they purchased in the city, allegedly using the stolen cash. R. Duraisamy, owner of a private garment knitting mill, lodged a complaint at the Tiruppur Central police station in January this year that cash and jewellery were missing from his residence after he employed four persons to clean his residence at Kullegoundenpalayam on Mangalam Road between October 2021 and December 2021. On a day the NCB gave clean chit to actor Shahrukh Khan’s son Aryan Khan , the Congress in a press conference accused the government of turning a blind eye to multiple drug hauls in Gujarat. Congress spokesperson Pawan Khera called Gujarat the “gateway of drugs”. Mr. Khera said that since July 2017 till Thursday, there have been series of drug hauls from Gujarat ports . In the latest on May 26, 52 kg of cocaine was recovered from Mundra port, which is owned by Gautam Adani. There were hauls of similar scale from Pipavav port owned by Nikhil Gandhi, he said. He listed out at least six instances since 2017 of drug hauls from these two ports. The government, conceding that there is a pattern to these incidents in October 2021, had handed over the case to National Investigative Agency. The Committee of Administrators (CoA) running the affairs of the Table Tennis Federation of India (TTFI) has released a new document on the TTFI website that covers a wide gamut of issues including the ‘Conflict of Interest’ and inconsistencies in selection of players for major international tournaments. Among them is the new selection/ranking criteria for domestic and international tournaments that will come into force on October 1, 2022 “or immediately after the first ranking tournament, whichever is earlier.” Explaining its strong stand on several issues, the CoA said: “the existing selection criteria and process are manifestly inadequate in implementing the vision and administrative goals of TTFI or in ensuring that the Indian table tennis players have the assurance of a transparent and consistent selection framework.” The CoA had released a new criteria proposal on April 6 seeking suggestions from all stakeholders — players, parents, coaches and State associations. India’s GDP growth in the fourth quarter (Q4) of 2021-22 could be as low as 2.5% to 2.9%, State Bank of India (SBI) economists have estimated, almost half the 4.8% growth projected earlier by the National Statistical Office (NSO), which will release the official data on May 31. While the NSO’s previous estimate had pegged GDP growth at 8.9% in 2021-22, a report from SBI’s group chief economic adviser Soumya Kanti Ghosh said a range of 8.2% and 8.5% is more likely, with the pace of economic activity slackening in Q4 owing to the Omicron wave and the ‘geopolitical conflagrations’ since February. “Economic activity, which gained strength in Q2 of 2021-22, with the ebbing of the second wave, has lost pace since Q3… the Q4 GDP numbers are expected to be much lower than Q3 [when GDP grew 5.4%] indicating a continuous deceleration in growth since the starting of the year,” the report said, adding that Q4 also marked the resurgence of retail inflation beyond the tolerance threshold of 6%. … [Read more...] about SBI expects GDP growth to dive below 3% in Q4, 2021-22
