James David Dickson The Detroit News Published 7:30 AM EDT Oct 9, 2018 Detroit – A Sumpter Township man convicted on all counts in the New Year’s Day abuse and murder of his girlfriend’s 4-year-old daughter is expected to be sentenced Tuesday morning. Brad Fields, 29, will appear before Judge Vonda Evans at Wayne County’s Third Circuit Court. At his jury trial in September, he was convicted of felony murder, second-degree murder, two counts of first-degree child abuse, one count of second-degree child abuse, and one count of torture in the death of Gabby Barrett. Gabby was killed at the family residence on Greenmeadow Drive in the Rawsonville Woods mobile home community near Willow Road. Gabby's mother and Fields' girlfriend, Candice Diaz, 25, is scheduled for a final conference on Oct. 30. Her trial is set to begin in March, also before Judge Evans. SUMMERVILLE, Ga. — Keeping in line with a statewide trend, lawyers had hoped to free a Chattooga County man today who is serving 30 years for selling less than a gram of cocaine. But now they're not so confident. As they have in 20 other successful cases, attorneys with the Southern Center for Human Rights filed a motion asking Judge Ralph Van Pelt Jr. to send William Henry Adams home, arguing that he received an unusually long prison sentence for a non-violent drug offense. In 1997, a jury convicted Adams, 55, of two counts of possession of cocaine and two counts of sale of cocaine. Because he had been convicted of three previous felonies, the prosecutor could demand that Adams receive the harshest possible punishment. After they watched a video of the shooting and listened to an hourlong police interrogation with the suspect, a Walker County, Georgia, jury convicted a Rossville man of murder Thursday. Police accused Robert William Ellis Jr., 43, of shooting Jeremy Little in the backyard of a home at 408 State Line Road last year. Witnesses testified the two men argued the night before the shooting, after Ellis allegedly threatened Little's girlfriend with a gun in the parking lot of the Dollar Tree in Rossville.
