Nearly half a century after the Supreme Court ruled that the ability to end a pregnancy was a constitutional right, the nation’s highest court has overturned Roe v. Wade . The majority opinion, authored by Justice Samuel Alito, ruled that the 1973 decision was wrong in its determination that an implied right to privacy in the U.S. Constitution protected a patient’s decision to have an abortion. “The Constitution does not confer a right to abortion; Roe and Casey are overruled,” Alito wrote for the 6-3 majority. “The authority to regulate abortion is returned to the people and their elected representatives.” The decision effectively ends abortion access for roughly 40 million women and girls in nearly two dozen states across the country. The U.S. Supreme Court on Friday formally overturned its 1973 decision in Roe v. Wade that legalized abortion nationwide. The decision arrived not long after Politico published in May a leaked draft opinion that showed a majority of the Court's conservative justices were poised to strike down Roe . Their decision came after hearing arguments on a Mississippi law that was a direct challenge to the landmark abortion-rights case. Roe protected women who seek an abortion "without undue restrictive interference from the government," as guaranteed under the 14th Amendment. The 1992 decision in Planned Parenthood v. Casey, which mostly protected that same right, is also repealed under the Court's new ruling. The Miranda warnings, which include telling a suspect they have a right to remain silent, are customarily recited upon arrest or before statements are given. Three Russian officials won a court ruling Thursday to overturn being barred from this weekend’s International Weightlifting Federation elections. The Court of Arbitration for Sport upheld appeals by Maxim Agapitov, who is an IWF board member, Dmitry Chernogorov and Aleksandr Kishkin. All three were excluded last month from the elections by a panel vetting potential candidates. The IWF-appointed panel did not have authority to make what were effectively disciplinary decisions against the Russians, CAS said in a statement.
