Omicron subvariant wave may peak in Indonesia in second to third week of July, says health minister

June 27, 2022 by www.thestar.com.my

JAKARTA, June 27 (The Straits Times/ANN): Indonesia, which has reported an uptick in Covid-19 cases driven by the Omicron subvariants, may see the wave peak in the second to third week of July before it starts to flatten, said Health Minister Budi Sadikin. His forecast is based on the experience of South Africa, the first to report the emergence of the subvariants BA.4 and BA.5, which saw its wave peak in 30 days. Indonesia's expected peak next month would see about 17,400 daily new cases, based on an assumption that the number will be about 30 per cent of that during the peak of the original Omicron variant in the third week of February, when the daily new cases reached 58,000. The seven-day average of the daily new cases rose 70 per cent to 1,688 on June 25, from 996 cases the previous week, according to government data. The Omicron subvariants, which have proven more transmissible, have however not caused higher hospitalisation and death rates in Indonesia. May 23, 2022 by www.news18.com

In a week of high volatility, bulls made a comeback on the D-street on Friday, May 20, 2022, thanks to sharp buying, which ended the five-week losing streak of the benchmark indices. At Friday’s close, Nifty was up 456.7 points or 2.89 per cent at 16,266 levels. Volumes on the NSE were a little below recent averages. Among sectors realty, metals, capital goods, and healthcare indices have gained the most. Advance decline ratio is sharply positive as well. Speaking on the Indian stock market , Sonam Srivastava, Founder at Wright Research said, “This week saw a surprising rebound, but hardly anyone is convinced that this rebound would stick, given the doom and gloom narrative from inflation watchers and central bankers. Autos and FMCG have led the pack this week, and Metals have also shown a steep recovery; nevertheless, the rise of defensives and commodities is a classic bear market move. As a result, the next few weeks will be weeks of caution and risk management.” Vinod Nair, … [Read more...] about Stock Market This Week: F&O expiry, Fed Meeting, Other Factors to Watch Out For

More Than 350 Protesters Detained in Venezuela This Week: Says UN

January 25, 2019 by www.news18.com

Geneva: More than 350 people in Venezuela have been arrested this week during demonstrations against President Nicolas Maduro's government, the UN rights chief said Friday, calling for immediate talks to defuse the "increasingly incendiary atmosphere". The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Michelle Bachelet, said her office had "reports of large-scale detention of demonstrators — well over 350 in total (this week), including 320 on 23 January alone". Bachelet called for a full investigation into alleged violations by the state, including summary executions. Civil society groups in Venezuela have put the death toll from days of street protests at 26. The rights office, citing "credible local sources," said it also had indications that at least 20 people "have died after allegedly being shot by security forces or members of pro-government armed groups during demonstrations on Tuesday and Wednesday". June 25, 2022 by www.thehindu.com

The Water Resources Department will start work next week on the reconstruction of the dilapidated check dam across the clean stretch of the Cooum near Sorancheri. The Cooum remains a major water source for Tiruvallur district. The stretch of the river near the recently renovated check dam at Korattur still has flow. Officials said the check dam would be built at the 39th km of the Cooum and about 7 km downstream of the Korattur check dam. “We have already dismantled the damaged structure. A ring bund would be formed to begin construction of the check dam as the river bed has a flow following recent rain spell,” said an official. The new structure would come up across the 85 m wide river and it would be of 1.5 metre height at Sorancheri. Several villages depend on borewells drilled near the river bed for drinking water needs.
