Mosquito bites
M y disgruntled uncle recently said that if the coronavirus was at least visible to the naked eyes, we could smash it with our bare hands, bringing the pandemic to an end. But our experience with another organism, the mosquito, which is at least a million times bigger than the virus, has proven us wrong. The mosquitoes are reasonably big, unmissable even for a person with cataract. It makes an annoyingly irritating buzzing sound near our ears audible even for an octogenarian hard of hearing. But it has managed to escape our “slaps and claps” and has been pestering us since time immemorial. Globally, the mosquito and its dirty baggage (mosquito-borne diseases) affect 700 million people and kill one million every year. It has been a source of diseases and death for hundreds of years. It has been living on earth even before the humans appeared, as carbon studies date its existence from about 200 million years ago. One can remember the iconic scene in the Jurassic Park movie where a … [Read more...] about Mosquito bites
Brit engineer ‘knows where missing MH370 plane is’ – but says some ‘don’t want it found’
An MH370 expert has claimed he knows the exact location of the lost plane. All 239 passengers and crew on board the Malaysia Airlines flight vanished along with the plane on March 8, 2014. British aerospace engineer Richard Godfrey claims he has narrowed down the search area for the aircraft to just 115 square miles, the Daily Star reports. The plane disappeared while flying from Kuala Lumpur, in Malaysia, to Beijing, China, and is believed to have crashed. Mr Godfrey believes he has now pinpointed the wrecked aircraft's location to 33.177°S 95.300°E. Marine robotics company Ocean Infinity announced at the 8th anniversary of the disappearance that they'll start a fresh search early 2023, in conjunction with Mr Godfrey. Marine robotics company Ocean Infinity has established a new search area for the plane Ocean Infinity will use newly built "cutting-edge" autonomous robotic vessels to scour the area that covers 88 nautical miles wide by 183 nautical miles long. … [Read more...] about Brit engineer ‘knows where missing MH370 plane is’ – but says some ‘don’t want it found’
Guns in paradise: Ruling could undo strict Hawaii carry law
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 29 HONOLULU (AP) — Megan Kau takes occasional weeklong hunting trips to the Hawaiian island of Lanai, where she enjoys watching the sunrise and hearing the distant rustle of deer and mouflon sheep in the tropical wilderness, a rifle ready at her side. As a gun owner, she also goes to shooting ranges several times a year. Those outings are the only times the attorney and Oahu native sees others with guns in this tourist mecca where strict laws make it harder to purchase firearms and restrict carrying loaded guns in public. Thursday’s U.S. Supreme Court ruling overturning New York's concealed weapon law will likely change things in Hawaii, too, where it's now highly unusual to see people carrying loaded weapons in public. Some … [Read more...] about Guns in paradise: Ruling could undo strict Hawaii carry law

Iran to Remove 27 Nuclear Monitoring Cameras; UN Says Move May Scupper Talks
The UN atomic energy watchdog said on Thursday that Iran was removing 27 surveillance cameras at its nuclear facilities, warning this could be a “fatal blow” to negotiations to revive a landmark deal. Talks began in April last year to bring the United States back to the 2015 accord, lifting sanctions, and Iran back into compliance, limiting its nuclear activities. But negotiations have stalled since March, and raising tensions, International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) members on Wednesday passed a resolution censuring Iran over its lack of cooperation with the watchdog. Iran has condemned the motion as “unconstructive”, announcing earlier on Wednesday that it had disconnected some IAEA cameras monitoring its nuclear sites. “What we have been informed is that 27 cameras … are being removed in Iran,” IAEA chief Rafael Grossi told reporters on Thursday. “So this of course poses a serious challenge to our ability to continue working there.” Grossi urged Iran to engage with him … [Read more...] about Iran to Remove 27 Nuclear Monitoring Cameras; UN Says Move May Scupper Talks
