SAN DIEGO (AP) — Mark Appel is a big league ballplayer nine years after he was selected No. 1 overall in the amateur draft. Appel has been promoted by the Philadelphia Phillies. The right-hander, who turns 31 on July 15, went 5-0 with a 1.61 ERA in 19 appearances for Triple-A Lehigh Valley. “Completely overwhelmed. I have so many thoughts I want to share but can’t find the words, so I’ll just say this: I’m thankful,” Appel posted on Twitter on Saturday. “Today, I get to play a game I love as a Major League Baseball player.” Appel is stepping in for right-hander Connor Brogdon, who has been placed on the COVID-19-related injury list. BERLIN — International powers with conflicting interests in Libya’s civil war have called for a cease-fire and agreed to respect a much-violated arms embargo in an effort to end the country’s long-running conflict. The agreement comes after a warning that the conflict that has spiraled into a proxy war risks becoming the "next Syria." The agreement on Sunday came after about four hours of talks in Berlin where German Chancellor Angela Merkel hosted leaders of 11 countries, with Libya’s two main rival leaders also in the German capital but not at the main conference table. Merkel told reporters that powers had agreed that a tentative truce in Tripoli over the past week should be turned into a permanent ceasefire to allow a political process to take place. A special committee made up of five military officials from each side will monitor the truce, she said. A poll released this week has revealed that 65 per cent of the French public believe that the country has seen too much immigration, with older French far more concerned with the issue. The poll, which was conducted by the CSA Institute, revealed that 65 per cent of French people overall say that the country has seen too much immigration with a small minority claiming that France has not seen enough immigration. When broken down by age, only those in the 18 to 24-year-old demographic thought France had not seen enough immigration at 60 per cent, while 72 per cent of people 50 to 64 think France has seen too much immigration, broadcaster CNews, which sponsored the survey, reports . Hurricanes coach Mario Cristobal told the hundreds of high school players, coaches and family members on UM’s campus that they were there to work. The latest addition is undrafted Fresno State junior Orlando Robinson, a 6-foot-11, 244-pound center with a 9-foot standing reach and 7 1/2-foot wingspan. Robinson, a source confirmed to the Sun Sentinel, agreed to an Exhibit 10 contract, which also creates a path to the team’s training camp. The first-team All-Mountain West selection is a deft offensive player who utilizes his skill and physicality to score at all three levels. The Karnataka government has selected the former Chief Minister S.M. Krishna, Infosys founder N.R. Narayana Murthy, and former Indian badminton player Prakash Padukone for the Kempe Gowda International Award, instituted in honour of Kempe Gowda, founder of Bengaluru. Minister for Higher Education C.N. Ashwath Narayan, who is also vice-president of the Nadaprabhu Kempe Gowda Heritage Area Development Authority, announced that an international award would be presented to three achievers every year starting this year in the name of Kempe Gowda. The award carries a purse ₹5 lakh and a plaque each. All three personalities chosen for the award this year have contributed to the growth of Bengaluru city, the Minister said.
