Fredrick Kunkle, The Washington Post Published 3:22 pm PDT, Wednesday, March 20, 2019 Volvo on Wednesday announced plans to install in-car cameras in its vehicles that will monitor drivers for signs of distracted or impaired driving and take action if it appears that the driver's behavior becomes dangerous. The Swedish automaker, which recently announced that it would also limit the top speeds of its cars as a way of making highways safer, said that the in-car cameras would be part of a system that would slow the vehicles and "safely park" them on the side of the road if they detected that a driver was becoming incapacitated or if the driver's attention had lapsed for a long period of time. The technology would also summon help from its 24/7 assistance center. Volvo Recalls Some 500,000 Vehicles Due to Faulty Engine Part
Volvo Cars is recalling about half a million cars worldwide because of a faulty engine component that may in extreme cases cause a vehicle to catch a fire. The Swedish carmaker said Monday the affected cars are two-liter, four-cylinder diesel engines manufactured between 2014 and 2019 in the following models: S60, S80, S90, V40, V60, V70, V90, XC60 and XC90. Volvo said the engine inlet manifold is made of plastic and could melt due to temperature changes. Spokesman Stefan Elfstrom told Swedish news agency TT the company has noticed in its investigations that "it has led to a car fire in a few cases." Urgent Inspection Bulletin: Safety Recall Issued by Volvo Trucks
The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) issued the following bulletin based upon a safety recall initiated by Volvo Trucks affecting nearly 20,000 Class 8 motor vehicles, with more than 17,000 affected vehicles in the United States (click here to view Volvo Trucks’ “Safety Recall Alert”).FMCSA has become aware of a critical safety defect that could severely affect the safe operation of these vehicles due to a faulty two-piece steering shaft. This condition can lead to separation of the steering shaft without warning and an immediate loss of steering ability and control which may lead to a vehicle crash. Operators of vehicles affected by the Volvo recall should take the vehicles out of service as soon as possible. Mack Trucks, Volvo Settle Benefits Case Brought by Retirees for $525M
Mack Trucks and its parent company, Volvo, agreed to pay $525 million to retired employees who challenged the company’s proposed reductions to lifetime health benefits in an Eastern District of Pennsylvania class action lawsuit.According to the Legal Intelligencer, Senior U.S. District Judge R. Barclay Surrick gave preliminary approval of the settlement today.
