McKenna’s Smart Move: Hiring More Bankruptcy Lawyers Before Downturn

· October 8, 2009 ·

The chairman of McKenna Long & Aldridge said leaders of the law firm had a feeling the real estate bubble would burst.Chairman Jeff Haidet told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution that McKenna Long anticipated the problems in 2007. As a result, the firm hired more bankruptcy and corporate restructuring lawyers to handle the expected increase in demand for those services.“Our overall strategy is about anticipating changes and developing services for our clients whether those changes are threats or opportunities for them,” Haidet told the newspaper. The strategy is evidently working; the firm has moved up the start dates of half of its incoming associate class from the fall to late summer, the story says. The firm’s ahead-of-the-curve strategy has also led it to beef up its government practice in anticipation of government stimulus spending, the Journal-Constitution story says. The law firm represented Canada in its bailout of General Motors and Chrysler. What does … [Read more...] about McKenna’s Smart Move: Hiring More Bankruptcy Lawyers Before Downturn

· March 25, 2015 ·

ENERGY AND CLIMATE DEBATEThe House and Senate face a full schedule the next several days before departing Friday for the Easter and Passover two-week recess. The House will begin consideration this week of its fiscal year 2016 budget resolution. The Senate will follow suit, spending much of the week focusing on the legislation and offering numerous amendments, including several energy and climate related measures. Senator Brian Schatz (D-HI) said March 23 that he is working with some of his colleagues, including Senators Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI), Barbara Boxer (D-CA), and Ed Markey (D-MA), to craft a package of climate amendments to the budget resolution. It is likely that both chambers will pass their competing budgets this week, opening the door to using the filibuster-proof reconciliation process to move other top agenda items, including energy measures.President Obama issued an executive order, “Planning for Federal Sustainability in the Next Decade,” March 19. Bay Area rides affordable housing wave following midterm elections

· November 9, 2018 ·

By Marisa Kendall | [email protected] | Bay Area News Group PUBLISHED: November 9, 2018 at 10:05 am | UPDATED: November 9, 2018 at 10:12 am Affordable housing advocates may not have gotten everything they wanted on their Election Day wish list, but they’re cheering a series of victories this week that may help ease the Bay Area’s housing crunch. That includes $6 billion in state-wide housing bonds and hundreds of millions more in local bonds and taxes. “I think overall, it’s probably an A-,” Matt Regan, senior vice president of public policy for the Bay Area Council, said of the pro-housing results. “That’s not bad. I’ll take that.” Still, some measures are too close to call, and others went down in defeat. In San Jose, for example, the housing department was counting on a $450 million bond to bring the city one step closer to its goal of building 10,000 affordable homes by 2022. But the … [Read more...] about Bay Area rides affordable housing wave following midterm elections

Energy and Environment Update- July 15, 2012

· July 15, 2012 ·

Energy and Climate DebateWith Congress back from the Independence Day recess, hearings on the farm bill and budget issues sparked some energy debate while House Republicans began efforts to restrict and curtail the loan guarantee program. In other news, Bank of America Merrill Lynch released a study July 12 finding that an abundant domestic energy supply may help to avert another U.S. recession. The Senate will vote early this week on the motion to proceed to the DISCLOSE Act (S. 3369), which would create more transparency in campaign financing; the chamber may also return to tax legislation (S. 3364) that would create incentives for companies to bring jobs back to the United States. The House is scheduled to consider a sequestration report measure (H.R. 5872) to require the White House to outline its plans to address automatic budget cuts, and will spend much of the week debating the fiscal year 2013 Department of Defense appropriations bill (H.R. 5856). Committees in both houses will … [Read more...] about Energy and Environment Update- July 15, 2012

Droid v. iPhone

· March 31, 2010 ·

There’s no denying the competition in smartphones is hot. With new phones, operating systems and a slew of task-specific apps, it’s hard not to be tempted—and confused. So the ABA Journal asked two tech-savvy lawyers, Finis R. Price III and Ryan C. McKeen, to state the case for two of the hottest brands: Price extols the virtues of Apple’s iPhone and McKeen talks up the Droid, one of the phones using Google’s Android OS. Neither is forgetting about the legal practice leader, RIM’s ubiquitous BlackBerry. But their goal is to convince a jury of their peers that their choice of smartphone is the best of the bunch.OPENING STATEMENTSMcKeen: The Droid is a you phone. The Android platform is a you platform. If you don’t like your phone’s background, that’s easy to change. If you don’t like the browser it comes with, you can find one you do like.I focus on the Motorola Droid, but the Android platform is where it’s at for … [Read more...] about Droid v. iPhone
