THREE people have died after a Fiat smashed head-on into a Mercedes when it crossed onto the wrong side of the road. The horror crash took place on the A428 in Northants last night, at around 9.20pm. All three occupants of the Fiat, the driver and two passengers, died at the scene on the Bedford Road in Denton. The man driving the Mercedes was taken to University Hospital Coventry with serious, but not life threatening, injuries. Fiat Chrysler agreed Wednesday to pay a settlement of over $500 million dollars regarding allegations over cheating federal and state emission tests. The consent decree acknowledges that Fiat Chrysler violated Clean Air Act and California law. The decree did not resolve criminal liability nor individual consumer claims regarding the emission scandal. Fiat Chrysler was ordered to begin a recall program on 100,000 non-compliant diesel vehicles. The company has a two year timeline to repair at least 85 percent of the vehicles before facing more penalties. Fiat Chrysler must also extend the warranty on those vehicles it has repaired and test vehicles for five years to ensure that the vehicles continue to meet emission standards. The company will pay additional penalties for failure to meet the emission standard on repaired vehicles. (Reuters) - Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV said on Thursday it will eliminate one shift at its Windsor, Ontario, assembly plant where it builds minivans, resulting in the loss of 1,500 jobs. The Italian-American automaker said in a statement the elimination of a shift, which will take effect on Sept. 30, was to address slowing global demand. The company said it would offer retirement packages to eligible employees and attempt to place indefinitely laid off hourly employees in open full-time positions. Earlier this week, Canadian media outlets reported Fiat Chrysler would idle the plant for two weeks in April, the third time this year the plant has been temporarily closed.
