Starbucks, Fiat Brace For EU Court Decision On Taxes
Sep 24, 12:11 AM EDT Newsletter Signup BusinessTechnologyWorldNationalMedia & CultureOpinionSportsLuxury World By Alex PIGMAN 09/23/19 AT 11:29 PM An EU court on Tuesday will decide if orders by Brussels that Starbucks and Fiat Chrysler pay back taxes are legal, in an early signal on how the same judges will decide a similar case with Apple. The cases from 2015 were the first out of the gate in the crackdown by the EU's anti-trust supremo Margarethe Vestager against member states that had sealed sweetheart tax deals with multinationals. If successful, the appeal at the EU's lower General Court against her state aid ruling could stymie Brussels' ambition to lodge more such cases against multinationals. In her landmark rulings, Vestager said Dutch authorities must recoup 30 million euros ($33 million) from Starbucks and Luxembourg a similar amount from Fiat Chrysler. These demands were dwarfed by the blockbuster order in 2016 that Apple repay Ireland 13 billion euros, a case that … [Read more...] about Starbucks, Fiat Brace For EU Court Decision On Taxes
EU Loses Big Starbucks Tax Case, Wins On Fiat
Sep 24, 5:31 AM EDT Newsletter Signup BusinessTechnologyWorldNationalMedia & CultureOpinionSportsLuxury World By Catherine KURZAWA 09/24/19 AT 5:10 AM An EU court on Tuesday annulled an order by Brussels that Starbucks pay 30 million euros to the Netherlands, saying regulators had failed to demonstrate it received illegal state aid.In a separate decision, however, the same court said Fiat must pay roughly the same amount to Luxembourg, upholding a similar EU order from 2015.The split decision will be closely watched by Apple, which was ordered to repay Ireland 13 billion euros in 2016 in a blockbuster case that is also making its way through EU courts. The cases can now be appealed at the EU's highest court, the European Court of Justice."The general court annuls the commission's decision on the aid measure implemented by the Netherlands in favour of Starbucks," the statement said."The commission was unable to demonstrate the existence of an advantage in favour of … [Read more...] about EU Loses Big Starbucks Tax Case, Wins On Fiat

Fiat Chrysler To Pay $40 Mn Fine For Misleading Sales Figures
Sep 27, 2:39 PM EDT Newsletter Signup BusinessTechnologyWorldNationalMedia & CultureOpinionSportsLuxury World By AFP News 09/27/19 AT 2:20 PM Fiat Chrysler will pay a $40 million fine for "falsely reporting" US car sales from 2012 to 2016, US regulators said Friday. The Michigan-based FCA US was "misleading investors about the number of new vehicles sold each month to customers in the United States," the Securities and Exchange Commission said. The false reports claimed the company had achieved a "'streak' of uninterrupted monthly year-over-year sales growth, when in fact, the growth streak had been broken in September 2013," the SEC said.On the key performance indicator, the SEC said, "FCA US inflated new vehicle sales results by paying dealers to report fake vehicle sales," and keeping unreported sales in a database often referred to as a "cookie jar."Then in months when the automaker was in danger of seeing its sales growth streak end or fall short of targets, "FCA US … [Read more...] about Fiat Chrysler To Pay $40 Mn Fine For Misleading Sales Figures
