CP Ships Completes Concurrent Share and Note Offering

The proceeds of the offerings are intended to be used by CP Ships to facilitate the purchase of additional container ships and to pay for CP Ships’s recently announced acquisition of Italia di Navigazione (an Italian company, which operates a fleet of 11 ships and a fleet of leased containers), with any remaining proceeds to be used to reduce CP Ships’s borrowings under its revolving credit facility.CP Ships’s general counsel, John Irving, was assisted by McCarthy Tétrault LLP, with a team led by Glen Ireland and including Graham Gow, David Woollcombe, Stu Miller, Karl Tabbakh, Evgenia Ivanova, Wendi Locke, Suzanne Murphy, Richie Clark and James Channo (corporate/securities) and Steven Baum and Nigel Johnston (tax) in London and Toronto. Italian Short-Term Ban on Shorting Banca Monte dei Paschi di Siena spa and Banca Carige spa

On October 27, 2014 the Commissione Nazionale per le Società e la Borsa (CONSOB), the Italian securities regulator,  issued an emergency short selling measure under the European Union’s Short Selling Regulation (Regulation 236/2012). Manatt Phelps to Pay $25M to Settle Malicious Prosecution Case Over Princess Di Memorabilia

A California law firm found to be too quick on the draw in bringing a big-bucks trademark suit on behalf of the estate of Diana Spencer, Princess of Wales and a memorial fund in her name is now having to pull out its own wallet.With the help of its insurer, Manatt Phelps & Phillips will pay $25 million to the then-owners of the entity the law firm sued, the Franklin Mint Co., the Los Angeles Times reported.The federal suit, which contended that the company made unauthorized collectible plates, dolls and purses in the memory of Princess Di after her 1997 death in an automobile was found to be without merit, and the Franklin Mint owners, Stewart and Lynda Resnick, counterclaimed for malicious prosecution, They were apparently particularly incensed about a claim in the complaint against them that referred to “vultures feeding on the dead,” according to the Am Law Daily.The Resnicks say they will give the $25 million to charity. Lawyer Says UK Tabloid May Have Hacked His Phone Messages for Princess Di Info

The list of people whose phones may have been hacked by a British tabloid is growing.The latest addition to the list is Michael Mansfield, a lawyer who represented the family of Princess Di’s boyfriend, Dodi Fayed, at the inquest into her death, according to the Associated Press and the Independent. The couple died in a 1997 car crash.Mansfield said he received a letter from Scotland Yard about six months ago informing him his voice mails may have been hacked by the News of the World tabloid. The journalists may have been trying to uncover news about Diana, he said.The Independent describes Mansfield as one of Britain’s leading lawyers.The News of the World has announced it is shutting down after publishing a last edition on Sunday, CNN reports. News reports have claimed the tabloid hacked phones and paid police for information.
