Marlowe Alter Detroit Free Press Published 12:01 AM EDT Apr 9, 2019 Maybe I'm a little crazy. Maybe. So with Tuesday's 2019 NHL draft lottery upon us, I decided to do my own analysis, simulating the results 100 times. Thanks to the beckoning of Tankathon.com, it didn't take long. The lottery decides the first 15 picks of the NHL draft. This year's top prize is 17-year-old Jack Hughes, younger brother of Vancouver's Quinn Hughes (Michigan). Jack Hughes, who plays for the Plymouth-based USA Hockey National Team Development Program in suburban Detroit, is regarded as a 'generational' talent. Finland forward Kaapo Kakko is the No. 2 prospect. The Detroit Red Wings have the fourth-best odds of the 15 lottery teams, with a 9.5% chance to win the No. 1 pick, and a 28.8% chance to move into the top 3. The Red Wings selected Filip Zadina at six last year. The NHL will draw for the first pick, then repeat the process for picks two and three. After … [Read more...] about NHL draft lottery: Simulating what happens to Detroit Red Wings
Helene St. James Detroit Free Press Published 1:15 PM EST Dec 1, 2018 BOSTON — Luke Witkowski didn’t think twice about helping. Friday evening, the Red Wings forward/defenseman posted a message on his Instagram feed to promote a charity game that will raise money for safety equipment for St. Clair Shores K-9 officers. The Jan. 19 event at the St. Clair Shores Civic Arena will feature players from the Michigan Warriors Hockey Program facing off against local police officers. “I had given a couple of the guys from the Michigan Warriors some tickets earlier in the season,” Witkowski said Saturday morning at TD Garden as he prepared for the evening game between the Wings and Boston Bruins. “They reached out to me and asked if I would spread the word. Being that I live in St. Clair Shores, I thought I could do my part and help out a little bit.” Admission price for the K-9 Axe memorial hockey game is $10 per person. The Michigan Warriors are … [Read more...] about Detroit Red Wings’ Luke Witkowski spreads word for K9 safety
Gustav Nyquist scored 3:44 into overtime to lift the Detroit Red Wings to their first win of the season, 4-3 over the Florida Panthers on Saturday night. Dennis Cholowski had a goal and an assist, and Thomas Vanek and Dylan Larkin also scored for the Red Wings, who were 0-5-2 in their first seven games. Jimmy Howard stopped 34 shots. On the winner, Nyquist grabbed a loose puck and his shot from the slot beat goalie Michael Hutchinson on the left side. Trailing 3-2, Florida's Mike Hoffman tied the score with 1:16 left in the third as his shot from the left circle went between Howard's pads. Nick Bjugstad had a goal and an assist, and Keith Yandle also scored for the Panthers, who played into overtime for the fourth time in their six games. Hutchinson finished with 27 saves. Detroit took a 3-2 lead on Larkin's goal in the second. Darren Helm passed to Larkin on the left side of the crease and Larkin poked it into the net at 7:50. Florida's Aleksander Barkov was awarded a penalty shot … [Read more...] about Nyquist Scores Winner in OT, Red Wings Beat Panthers 4-3
Helene St. James Detroit Free Press Published 12:02 PM EDT Oct 16, 2018 A winless team begets questions about a coaching change. The losses are mounting for the Detroit Red Wings, who at 0-4-2 are off to their worst start since the 1985-86 season, when they were winless in their first nine games. The confidence that emanated from them after their first road trip, when they played well but lost in regulation and in a shootout in southern California, has evaporated. It was an angry, embarrassed group that returned home from the second road trip, which saw the Wings lose 8-2 at Boston and 7-3 at Montreal. How does this start affect head coach Jeff Blashill? Let’s examine. My sense is management/ownership is not looking to fire Blashill. They recognize the Wings lack talent, that the team is paying for all those years of making the playoffs and thus not drafting a high-end player (when the Wings selected Michael Rasmussen at ninth overall in 2017, that was their … [Read more...] about Is Detroit Red Wings coach Jeff Blashill in trouble?
