MICHAEL Schumacher is "still really close" with his family despite his traumatic head injury, a close pal has revealed in a rare update on the star's condition. The stricken F1 legend, who turned 50 last week, is being cared for at his home near Lake Geneva in Switzerland. He has not been seen publicly since suffering a severe brain injury in a horror skiing accident in the Alps in 2013. Details on the seven-time world champ's condition have remained scarce. But since the tragedy, family friend and manager Sabine Kehm has offered small glimpses into the beloved racing star's everyday life. Interviewed by the podcast Beyond The Grid to mark Schuey's birthday, Kehm said the ace's supportive family have always been his number one priority - and continue to play the same role today. THE Pope's "right hand man" has told how he held Michael Schumacher's hands and made a sign of the cross during a visit to his home. Archbishop Georg Gänswein has revealed details of his moving meeting with the stricken Formula One champ as he recovers in Lake Geneva. The news of the 2016 visit comes as it can be revealed Pope Francis himself has held prayers for the critically-ill German sports legend. The pontiff offered prayers for the recovery of racing legend following a personal request from former Ferrari boss Jean Todt. "Michael is close to my heart, as everyone knows," Todt has told Vatican Radio. "He is part of my family. I asked (Pope Francis) if he would like to pray for (Schumacher), and he gladly accepted. "Francis knows of Schumacher and had also heard of his accident." Todt said he phoned Schumacher's wife, Corinna, after the meeting to inform her of the Pope's prayer promise.
