The Centres for Disease Control ( CDC ) is investigating whether an acute hepatitis virus that has killed five children in the U.S. and sickened dozens of others could be linked to pet dogs. Health officials in the U.S. have identified 109 cases of the mysterious hepatitis virus, which affects the liver. The cases, which are concentrated in pre-school children, occurred over the past seven months in 24 states and Puerto Rico. Around 90 percent of the children were hospitalized and 14 percent needed liver transplants, CDC Deputy Director for Infectious Diseases Jay Butler, told a press conference Friday. All were previously healthy. Similar cases have been reported outside the U.S. The World Health Organization ( WHO ) said that as of May 1 it had recorded 228 probable cases in 20 countries, the majority of which are in Europe and the U.S. A possible link between the unusual number of acute pediatric hepatitis cases and dogs originated with a report Friday from the U.K. … [Read more...] about Mystery hepatitis disease killing children might be linked to dogs: CDC

Air pollution linked with more severe COVID-19, study finds
Common air pollutants, such as small particulate matter and ground-level ozone, are associated with more severe outcomes after COVID-19 infection, including admission to the intensive care unit (ICU), according to a study. The research, published on May 24 in the Canadian Medical Association Journal, analysed data on 1,51,105 people aged 20 years and older with confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infection in 2020 in Ontario, Canada, not living in a long-term care facility. The researchers modelled historical exposure to three common air pollutants before the pandemic - fine particulate matter (PM2.5), nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and ground-level ozone (O3). They adjusted for date of diagnosis, sex and age, being part of an outbreak, essential worker status, neighbourhood socioeconomic status, health care access including previous influenza vaccination history, previous outpatient visits and other factors. The study identified 8,630, 1,912 and 2,137 COVID-19-related hospital admissions, ICU … [Read more...] about Air pollution linked with more severe COVID-19, study finds

Chelsea FC sale approved by the Premier League Board – but takeover not final yet
The Premier League Board has approved the proposed takeover of Chelsea Football club by the Todd Boehly / Clearlake Consortium. However, the sale is not yet final, with the purchase still subject to the government issuing the required licence and the satisfactory completion of the final stages of the transaction. But it is another major hurdle cleared, as the board has applied the Premier League's Owners' and Directors' Test (OADT) to all prospective directors and undertaken the necessary due diligence. Chelsea FC will now work with the relevant governments to secure the necessary licences to complete the takeover. The sale will bring down the curtain on Roman Abramovich 's 19-year tenure as the owner of Chelsea. Majority of Black British women suffer side effects from hair relaxers such as burnt scalp, study finds
Two thirds of Black British women have experienced painful side effects – including burnt scalps and hair loss – from using hair relaxers, new research has revealed. A study of 1,024 Black British women aged 25-44, conducted by feminist group Level Up and Black hair care company Treasure Tress, found that over 95 per cent of Black British women do not trust big beauty brands to sell them safe products. Some 97 per cent of respondents believe hair products containing lye – also known as sodium hydroxide – should be banned. The survey, the first of its kind in Britain, sought to understand Black women’s experiences of hair relaxers, uncovering some startling experiences of ailments developed following use of such products. Hair relaxers that contain lye, a harsh chemical used in drain unblockers, have been linked to a range of health problems among Black British women including breast cancer, hormone imbalance, asthma, fibroids and fertility problems. … [Read more...] about Majority of Black British women suffer side effects from hair relaxers such as burnt scalp, study finds
Joe Biden, emboldened by Russia’s failures, gets aggressive toward China
President Joe Biden 's remarks on Monday about the U.S. "commitment" to defend Taiwan militarily if the island is attacked by China appears to represent a more aggressive approach than previous presidents have taken. While Biden said that the U.S. policy of so-called "strategic ambiguity" on Taiwan had not changed, his comments are his strongest warning yet to China that the U.S. would defend Taiwan if it's attacked. Biden may feel emboldened to take a harder line against China following the strategic failures of the Russian invasion of neighboring Ukraine, where Russian forces could not seize the capital city of Kyiv during the first stage of the war and have subsequently fallen back. The president directly linked the issue of a hypothetical Chinese attack on Taiwan to the Russia-Ukraine conflict on Monday as he answered a question about Taiwan's defense. Biden told reporters in Tokyo that China was "already flirting with danger right now by flying so close and all the … [Read more...] about Joe Biden, emboldened by Russia’s failures, gets aggressive toward China
The dangerous parallel between monkeypox and AIDS
Experts have drawn parallels to the recent coverage of the monkeypox virus to initial reporting about the HIV/AIDs epidemic in the 1980s, warning that it will fuel stigma and jeopardize the response to the outbreak. The United Nations AIDS agency (UNAIDS) said that "a significant proportion" of recent monkeypox cases have been identified among gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men. But UNAIDS added that the World Health Organization ( WHO ) has said that available evidence suggests those who are most at risk are people who have had close physical contact with someone with monkeypox, and that risk is not limited to men who have sex with men. David Heymann, a leading advisor to WHO, said the recent cases appear to have gotten into the population through sexual contact . He told the Associated Press earlier this week that the leading theory to explain the recent spread was sexual transmission at raves held in Spain and Belgium. That has led to some reporting … [Read more...] about The dangerous parallel between monkeypox and AIDS
New permanent nucleus created for Rajasthan’s folk artistes
Having emerged as a permanent and well-constructed nucleus for the famed folk artistes of western Rajasthan, a new centre situated deep in the Thar desert is helping the Langa-Manganiyar and other singers in honing the skills of their youngsters. The centre has also provided a permanent platform to the artistes from about 50 villages in Barmer and Jaisalmer districts. The new campus of Dharohar Lok Kala and Gramin Vikas Sansthan, situated over two-bigha land in Sheo village, 55 km from Barmer, will function as sanctum sanctorum of the vocal and instrumental ensemble of Langas and Manganiyars and help save their rapidly disappearing narrative traditions. The initiative has been taken by two brothers belonging to the Manganiyar community. While three business houses extended financial support to Bhutte Khan and Bhungar Khan for constructing rooms, toilets, training hall and a vast open air performing dais at the centre, a two-day festival titled “Singing Sands” was organised there … [Read more...] about New permanent nucleus created for Rajasthan’s folk artistes
Adenovirus, Covid-19 potential cause of hepatitis outbreak: Indonesia
JAKARTA (The Jakarta Post/Asia News Network): Adenovirus infection and post-Covid-19 infection are among a number of working hypotheses the government is investigating regarding the mysterious cause of the outbreak that has infected children across the globe. Deputy Health Minister Dante Saksono Harbuwono said on Monday (May 23) that one of the likely causes of the acute hepatitis outbreak was adenovirus infection among children. Adenovirus is a common pathogen that spreads from person to person and typically causes respiratory illness. “But, as regards to why [adenovirus infection] has suddenly popped up among children, we are still investigating that. We know that around 70 per cent of the children [with acute hepatitis] were infected with the adenovirus,” Dante said during a meeting with the House of Representatives Commission IX, which oversees demographic affairs, health and manpower. Another possibility, Dante said, was that the hepatitis outbreak could have been a … [Read more...] about Adenovirus, Covid-19 potential cause of hepatitis outbreak: Indonesia
UK Woman Gets Rs 72 Lakh Compensation For Not Being Invited to Office Party
An employment tribunal, in the United Kingdom, has directed a company to pay Rs 10 lakh compensation to a woman who was not invited to an office party. 51-year-old Rita Leher had approached the tribunal after being the only employee of Asper casino who was not invited to a cocktail party for post-work drinks in London, reported 7 News. Leher, who is also of mixed race, alleged that her exclusion was due to her ethnicity and age. Siding with Leher, the tribunal headed by Employment Judge Sarah Moor agreed that Leher’s exclusion was a ‘detriment at work’ as she would ‘lose the opportunity to bond with colleagues. The tribunal added that the occasion was sufficiently linked to work as it was only amongst the colleagues and was discussed at the workplace. The gathering would have allowed employees to create a team bonding. It was also found that Leher was also discriminated against after being denied a training course which was given to younger. However, Leher was left out of it even … [Read more...] about UK Woman Gets Rs 72 Lakh Compensation For Not Being Invited to Office Party
