GST Plan for Online Gaming Concerns Industry Experts About Future Growth

June 27, 2022 by www.news18.com

The government’s proposal to tax online gaming at the highest rate under the goods and services tax (GST) has the sector concerned about its prospects for future expansion. It was reported that a proposal from the group of state finance ministers to collect a 28% GST on casinos, and horse racing, along with online gaming, is expected to be reviewed by the GST Council at its upcoming meeting on June 28. Online gaming should be taxed at the entire value of the consideration, including the contest entry fee paid by the player upon participation in the game, according to a recommendation made by the Group of Ministers led by Meghalaya chief minister Conrad Sangma. However, executives and online gaming industry experts have expressed concerns. According to them, it could slow down the expansion of online gaming companies and force fantasy sports companies to provide smaller prize pools, which could cause their loyal customers to quit the platforms in pursuit of greater games. … [Read more...] about GST Plan for Online Gaming Concerns Industry Experts About Future Growth

Donald Trump’s views on abortion and Roe v. Wade in his own words

September 29, 2020 by www.newsweek.com

With less than two months until the election, President Donald Trump has continued to express his views on abortion and the 1973 Roe v. Wade Supreme Court decision, during his time in office, as well as before entering the White House. Trump is set to face off against Democratic challenger Joe Biden in the first presidential debate on Tuesday and following Trump's recent nomination of Amy Coney Barrett to the Supreme Court, abortion and Roe v. Wade are two issues likely to be brought up. Here's what Trump has said about both issues over the years. 1999 Interview on NBC News' Meet the Press "Well, look, I'm very pro-choice," Trump said when asked if he would ban partial-birth abortions as president. "I hate the concept of abortion. I hate it. I hate everything it stands for. I cringe when I listen to people debating the subject. But you still – I just believe in choice. And, again, it may be a little bit of a New York background, because there is some different attitude … [Read more...] about Donald Trump’s views on abortion and Roe v. Wade in his own words

Supreme Court Uses Praying Football Coach to Gut Separation of Church and State

June 27, 2022 by www.thedailybeast.com

Continuing its hot streak of elevating religious concerns over democratic rights, the conservative-dominated Supreme Court on Monday overruled a 51-year old precedent on the separation of church and state and opened the door to prayer in public school. It did so on ideological lines, 6-3, just days after gutting the constitutional right to abortion . The facts of the case are familiar to anyone who went to public school in a conservative area, as I did. A high-school football coach, Joseph Kennedy, led prayers both on-field and in the locker room at football games. Although the Court’s opinion in Kennedy v. Bremerton School District , authored by Justice Neil Gorsuch, says these prayers were personal and private, Justice Sotomayor’s dissent includes photographs of the actual prayers, showing that they were anything but: football players kneeled around the coach as he led them in Christian prayer. From a constitutional point of view, these facts present the tension … [Read more...] about Supreme Court Uses Praying Football Coach to Gut Separation of Church and State

Five highlights from former Ukraine ambassador Marie Yovanovitch’s testimony at Day 2 impeachment hearing

November 15, 2019 by www.newsweek.com

Former U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine Marie Yovanovitch testified for hours on Friday about being removed from her post and attacks on her from President Donald Trump as part of the House Democrats' ongoing impeachment inquiry. Yovanovitch appeared before the House Intelligence Committee for a public hearing and was the third witness to testify to Congress this week about the Ukraine controversy. On Wednesday, diplomat William Taylor and State Department official George Kent gave damning testimony against the president. Yovanovitch was appointed ambassador under several different presidents, both Republican and Democrat, and began serving in Ukraine in August 2016. In May 2019, she was abruptly removed from her post even though, she says, her bosses assured her she'd done nothing wrong. The reasoning behind her dismissal has become a major focus of the House investigation of the president's conduct toward Ukraine. Yovanovitch told Congress that Trump and his personal attorney Rudy … [Read more...] about Five highlights from former Ukraine ambassador Marie Yovanovitch’s testimony at Day 2 impeachment hearing

For two California Republicans, diverging approaches to Trump lead to the same place: Backlash

February 8, 2021 by www.latimes.com

Nearly a month after objecting to electoral votes cast for President Biden, Rep. Mike Garcia wanted to clear the air. In a lengthy Jan. 30 op-ed in a local newspaper, the Santa Clarita Republican and former Navy fighter jet pilot denounced the blowback on social media that branded him “a seditionist, a traitor, or even worse.” Roughly 150 miles to the north, Rep. David Valadao also had some explaining to do after voting to impeach President Trump for his part in inciting the deadly riot at the U.S. Capitol. He, like Garcia, was disparaged by some constituents as a traitor. Two votes in Congress in successive weeks — one to certify Biden’s election and another to impeach the president — snared the two California Republicans into the pitched battle over the future of their party: whether the GOP will demand allegiance to Trump or break from his influence. On one side sits Garcia and the majority of House Republicans, who on Jan. 6 aligned with Trump in rejecting the will of the … [Read more...] about For two California Republicans, diverging approaches to Trump lead to the same place: Backlash

Rewriting ‘old history’ for a New India

June 27, 2022 by www.thehindu.com

Recent investigative reports ( The Indian Express , June 19-22, 2022) bring to light proposals for deletions and changes to school textbooks across the board. The aim, purportedly, is to reduce the load on school students who have suffered a loss of learning due to extended shutdowns during the novel coronavirus pandemic. However, the changes made in the history textbooks specifically target certain areas of India’s past and will result in an ideological shift in history teaching at the school level. Curricular changes The Government is currently undertaking a series of curricular changes. The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Education, Women, Children, Youth and Sports recently tabled its Report on the Reforms in Content and Design of School Text books (November 30, 2021). The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) is already in the process of formulating the new National Curricular Framework, which will direct the syllabi of central and State … [Read more...] about Rewriting ‘old history’ for a New India

Student loan forgiveness scam is already Biden policy

June 23, 2022 by www.foxnews.com

close Video Biden expected to cancel $6 billion in student loan debt The 'Outnumbered' panel reacted to the report and the potential repercussions associated with the move. NEW You can now listen to Fox News articles! Policymakers and millions of Americans are rightfully worried about the headlines that President Joe Biden is seriously considering mass student loan forgiveness for 44 million borrowers. The ramifications of such a policy for taxpayers, students, and our society cannot be overstated. Blanket student loan forgiveness will lead to more inflation-filled deficit spending and the removal of any incentive for schools and students to practice financial responsibility. Yet, while members of Congress and talking heads are distracted by what Biden might do on student loans, they’re missing the widespread debt cancellation happening right before their eyes — and that’s exactly what the president wants. Take the Department of … [Read more...] about Student loan forgiveness scam is already Biden policy
