The story so far: The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) said on Tuesday, May 17, that a sculpture of a lion , which possibly dates back to the Ganga dynasty, was found during excavation for the controversial heritage corridor project around the 12th century Jagannath Temple in Puri, Odisha. This is the third such lion sculpture found during the excavation work. The East Ganga dynasty had ruled Kalinga, as Odisha was called in ancient times, from the early fifth century to the early 15th century. The Odisha government’s ambitious temple corridor project in Puri has become a subject of political controversy between Chief Minister Naveen Pattanaik’s Biju Janata Dal government and the opposition BJP and Congress. Three court proceedings are currently underway in the matter. On May 9, the ASI noted in a report submitted to the Orissa High Court that there was every possibility of archaeological remains at the heritage site being destroyed due to the excavation work for the … [Read more...] about Explained | What is the controversy around Odisha’s Jagannath temple Heritage Corridor Project?

Explained | Has the anti-defection law failed?
The story so far: Maharashtra is in the throes of a constitutional crisis . Many ruling Shiv Sena legislators who seem to have revolted against the leadership of Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray are now holed up in a hotel in distant Guwahati to keep out of the reach of party leaders. Their travel to Guwahati, via Surat, seems to have been facilitated by the BJP, the ruling party in Gujarat and Assam. All indications are that there is a planned mass defection underway so that an alternative regime that includes the BJP is formed in the State. Isn’t there a law against such defection? The Tenth Schedule of the Constitution , commonly known as the anti-defection law, was introduced in 1985 with a view to curb the tendency among legislators to switch loyalties from one party to another and facilitate the toppling of regimes and formation of new ones. It provides for the Presiding Officer of the legislature to disqualify any defector on a petition by another member. The law … [Read more...] about Explained | Has the anti-defection law failed?

The story so far: The U.S. Supreme Court on Friday ended the constitutional right to abortion , overturning the landmark 1973 Roe v. Wade decision that had enshrined a woman’s right to her body. In its ruling, the Conservative-dominated SCOTUS (Supreme Court of the United States) said , “The Constitution does not confer a right to abortion;… and the authority to regulate abortion is returned to the people and their elected representatives.” The 6-3 verdict echoed a draft opinion leaked in early May claiming that the SCOTUS would vote to strike down the right to abortion. Also overturned on Friday, was Planned Parenthood vs Casey , a 1992 case that upheld Roe . While anti-abortionists led by former President Donald Trump cheered the judgment , pro-choice advocates and women’s rights bodies decried the move, calling it a “horrifying decision with devastating consequences.” According to the Guttmacher Institute, an abortion rights advocacy research group, 26 states (of the … [Read more...] about Explained | How will the
‘Your Body Belongs to Christ’: US Anti-abortionists See Divine Hand in Court Ruling
Diana Villanueva’s rapist took her to an abortion clinic when she was just 16 years old and told her to terminate her pregnancy. She wasn’t greeted by the crowds of protestors who often gather outside facilities in the United States to try to persuade women to change their minds. But now, this 53-year-old Catholic wishes she had been — because she has been haunted by the termination ever since. “I was afraid that someone would see me because my mom was very involved in the church and I was afraid that somebody from church was going to be there,” she told AFP. “But then at the same time, I wish somebody would have been there, because maybe that would have given me the courage to speak out and say: ‘I don’t want to do this’.” Villanueva now runs a retreat in her native El Paso, Texas, helping women who, like her, regret their abortion. Devised by psychologist Theresa Burke and present in dozens of countries, “Rachel’s Vineyard” draws on biblical scripture and is described as … [Read more...] about ‘Your Body Belongs to Christ’: US Anti-abortionists See Divine Hand in Court Ruling
US Abortion Ruling: Police at Arizona Capitol Fire Tear Gas, Disperse Protesters
Police fired tear gas to disperse anti-abortion demonstrators from outside the Arizona Capitol Friday night, forcing lawmakers to huddle briefly in a basement inside the building as they rushed to complete their 2022 session. Thousands of protesters had gathered earlier on the Capitol grounds in Phoenix, divided into groups both supporting and condemning the US Supreme Courts decision overturning Roe v. Wade. SWAT team members with the Department of Public Safety fired tear gas from second floor of the old Capitol building to disperse protesters in the mall between the current House and Senate buildings. KPHO-TV reported the officers opened fire when several anti-abortion protesters started banging on glass doors of the Senate building. Authorities said there were no injuries or arrests. The incident sent Senate lawmakers into the basement for about 20 minutes, said Democratic Sen. Martin Quezada. Stinging tear gas wafted through the building afterward, forcing the Senate to … [Read more...] about US Abortion Ruling: Police at Arizona Capitol Fire Tear Gas, Disperse Protesters
Motorists divided after BMW drives in middle lane of empty motorway at 5am
Motorists were divided over footage showing a BMW driving in middle lane of an empty M5 at 5am An image of the vehicle shows it in the centre lane with no other road users seen anywhere. Annoyed viewer Dave Harford used social networking site Twitter to vent his frustration. He believes drivers should keep to the left. Dave started an online battle between those in favour and critics of the driver. He told WalesOnline the car was travelling at around 50mph and had been using the middle lane for more than a mile. He said that it was an example of similar cases he sees on a daily basis and called lane hogging 'illegal' as it forces cars to enter the outside lane to overtake. The image of the vehicle sparked an online row ( Image: Dave Harford / SWNS) Dave, 43, from Worcester, added: "Traffic was behind this vehicle and said traffic had to move to lane 3 to go past him - causing more risk. Resolute recycling
Petaling Jaya residents in Selangor stand out when it comes to waste separation and recycling in the Klang Valley. More than 42,000 landed residential properties are now involved in Petaling Jaya City Council’s (MBPJ) kerbside recycling collection, which is in its fourth phase, and the number is set to grow as new locations are added with each phase. This is double the number of households participating in a similar exercise in neighbouring Subang Jaya. MBPJ hopes that the entire city of Petaling Jaya will participate in this project by 2024. The project is the brainchild of MBPJ Solid Waste Management and Public Cleansing Department director Lee Lih Shyan. Initially fully managed by the city council, it now operates on an extended producer responsibility (EPR) framework. EPR is an approach that sees manufacturers playing a significant role in waste management. The Supreme Court prompts the question: Who gets rights in America?
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 5 Amy Martin was 14 years old when Roe v. Wade was decided, establishing a right to abortion that she took for granted for nearly five decades. Martin was 56 when the Supreme Court legalized same-sex marriage in 2015, a right she took advantage of when she married her partner of 30 years last year. And when the court overturned that first decision on Friday, with Justice Clarence Thomas writing in his opinion that the court should next reexamine cases granting LGBTQ rights, Martin found herself seized with new terror that the second one could also fall. "What if gay marriage is the next thing?" said Martin, 63, who recently retired from her job at a Cleveland law office, and whose health-care benefits come from her wife's policy. "The fabric of our country and what it's been based on, it's fraying." As the implications of the court's abortion decision continued to … [Read more...] about The Supreme Court prompts the question: Who gets rights in America?
Carlson on Dem Reaction to Dobbs: ‘Don’t Lecture Us Ever Again About the Sanctity of Our Institutions’

How Boris Johnson’s appalling standards contaminated No 10
One of the most important modules I teach my medical students is on patient safety . We cover why safety incidents occur, how to learn from them and most importantly how to prevent them. There are lots of different ways of learning from our mistakes in medicine, most of which involve Sherlocking through the events to understand the pinch points where error occurred. Often mistakes are made because of a lack of something: not enough staff, not enough equipment, not enough time, not enough leadership. They are very often singular events, and the people involved are horrified that the mistake has occurred on their watch. But, as so many scandals of the last two years have demonstrated, sometimes they are not singular events. Sometimes safety incidents are indicative of a wider, more persistent culture that promotes and condones actions that perpetuate unsafe and even deadly practices. How does such a culture develop and persist? A single common idea runs through all the … [Read more...] about How Boris Johnson’s appalling standards contaminated No 10
