With Koch Brothers Academy, Conservatives Settle In for Long War
ARLINGTON, Va. — The rise of Donald J. Trump, with his hostility toward free trade and vow to protect entitlements, is a sharp rebuke to the free-market principles long championed by the billionaire brothers Charles G. and David H. Koch. But if the Koch brothers have lost the battle for conservative values in 2016, they are also quietly preparing for a long war. Their secret weapon is the Grassroots Leadership Academy: a training program dreamed up by the Americans for Prosperity Foundation, the political education arm of the Koch network, and intended to groom the next generation of conservative activists to shape the future of the Republican Party. Taking inspiration from icons of the left like Saul Alinsky, the Marxist-inspired Frankfurt School, and even President Obama’s Organizing for Action , the academy offers classes like “Messaging to the Middle” (about reaching not just the conservative base but also persuadable voters), community organizing and how to wage a … [Read more...] about With Koch Brothers Academy, Conservatives Settle In for Long War
Koch Group, Spending Freely, Hones Attack on Government
WASHINGTON — Americans for Prosperity — the group backed by David H. and Charles G. Koch that has been pouring millions of dollars into competitive Senate races to the rising alarm of Democrats — was also among the politically active groups on the ground in this month’s special House election on Florida’s Gulf Coast. But its agenda had little to do with the fate of David Jolly , the Republican candidate who won that race. The group’s ground troops — including those who knocked on doors, ran phone banks and reached out through social media to gauge ways to motivate voters — were part of a much greater project, with a prize much larger than a congressional seat. Americans for Prosperity turned the Florida contest into its personal electoral laboratory to fine-tune get-out-the-vote tools and messaging for future elections as it pursues its overarching goal of convincing Americans that big government is bad government. As the group emerges as a dominant force in the 2014 midterm … [Read more...] about Koch Group, Spending Freely, Hones Attack on Government
Man sets up UK’s first Food Bank Day as demand soars – how to help out
The cost of living crisis inspired one man to set up the UK's first Food Bank Day to help raise support and ensure no-one has to go hungry. More and more Brits are turning to food banks as they are unable to afford to eat - and in some areas 40% are children. Now Simon Baum, 43, has organised the UK's first Food Bank Day, which takes place on November 30. "The aim of Food Bank Day is to give a big boost to food banks in the run-up to what will probably be their busiest-ever Winter", Baum said. Essex-based Baum, a musician and recruitment agency boss, said he got the idea for Food Bank Day after one of his friends fell into financial difficulty and began using a food bank. "One of my friends, he stopped coming on nights out and became withdrawn," Baum explained. House Republicans criticized over assault weapon lapel pins: “Mortifying”
House Republicans have been slammed for sporting lapel pins shaped like assault rifles. Rep. Andrew Clyde of Georgia on Thursday took credit for the pins that colleagues Rep. George Santos of New York and Rep. Anna Paulina Luna of Florida have been photographed wearing. "I hear that this little pin that I've been giving out on the House floor has been triggering some of my Democratic colleagues," Clyde said in a video posted on Twitter . "Well, I give it out to remind people of the Second Amendment of the Constitution and how important it is in preserving our liberties." The pins sparked outrage from Democrats and others on social media, coming in the wake of a series of mass shootings and during National Gun Violence Survivors Week. Rep. Jimmy Gomez, a Democrat from California , said on Twitter that Clyde did not mention that he owns a gun store. "Not only are you mocking gun violence survivors during #GVSurvivors Week, but you're making a profit off of mass … [Read more...] about House Republicans criticized over assault weapon lapel pins: “Mortifying”

Twitter curbs researcher access, sparking backlash in Washington
Twitter's decision to restrict access to a key tool used to study the platform is sparking backlash from researchers and Democratic lawmakers, who say the move undercuts owner Elon Musk's pledges to boost transparency at the social network. On Thursday, Twitter announced that it will shutter the ability to freely access its API, or application programming interface - software tools that allow outside researchers and developers to collect and analyze data from a site. Instead, Twitter's development team tweeted, the company will begin charging for it, without specifying how much. The decision will likely price out academics and journalists looking into Twitter's practices and the spread of harmful content on the platform, Democratic lawmakers said. "This move will make it more difficult for researchers to access the information necessary to understand harms on Twitter, including misinformation, foreign influence operations and more," said Rep. Lori Trahan (D-Mass.), who led a … [Read more...] about Twitter curbs researcher access, sparking backlash in Washington
‘Confident’ Dancing on Ice star Ekin-Su hits back at critics after outfit row
The thrills are alive as Ekin-Su Cülcüloglu ditches her prim Sound of Music image and prepares to get sexy again, declaring: “I’m going to shine and I’m going to be me.” The Dancing On Ice star notched an impressive 33.5 points last week by performing as the classic musical’s wholesome Maria von Trapp. But it came a fortnight after Love Island winner Ekin-Su turned the heat up by skating her opening routine to the Britney Spears song Toxic. Her sequinned catsuit and raunchy dance – including a crawl across the ice – sparked protest and TV regulator Ofcom got more than 100 complaints.
