Effective control needed for the police
Kim Jong-min The author is an attorney and co-president of the Citizens Coalition for Social Justice. Police reform has become urgent after an advisory committee under the minister of the interior and safety recommended the establishment of a police reform committee directly under the president. An alternative option was later proposed to newly install a post of police policy officer within the ministry of the interior and safety to enhance the democratic control, supervision and command of the police, which will become more powerful when they take away investigative powers from the prosecution in September. While sympathizing with the need for a system to check the mighty police, opponents criticize the measure for intensifying the police’s subordination to political power. At this point, it is important to properly examine the essence of the police system and its institutional specificities and problems. The police use orders and coercion against individuals as a means to … [Read more...] about Effective control needed for the police
How To Determine If (And When) Your Brand Should Comment On Social Or Political Issues
I know this may be an unpopular opinion, but I think many brands have crept too far into the political arena and have pigeonholed themselves when it comes to supporting broader socio-political issues. We are in a time that I feel cries out for unity, not division, and every individual and brand should do its part to mend this divide rather than magnify it. While there have been several defining moments that put both political and social justice issues front and center (e.g., the Black Lives Matter movement following the acquittal of George Zimmerman in the Trayvon Martin case in 2013 and the more recent COVID-19 pandemic that resulted in mask and vaccine mandates), I've seen many publicly and privately held companies miscalculate if and when they should leverage their social followings and brand reach to shed light on particular issues. Recent research actually highlights this issue. A new study ( via EurekAlert ) found that people who receive gift cards are less appreciative of … [Read more...] about How To Determine If (And When) Your Brand Should Comment On Social Or Political Issues
No Safety Assurance To LGBTQIA+ Fans Planning To Attend FIFA World Cup In Qatar
Qatar has failed to ensure safety for the LGBTQIA+ fans who are planning to attend the FIFA World Cup 2022, scheduled to be held in the month of November. As a result, the leading LGBTQIA+ organisations are advocating against travelling to the Arab country for the tournament. Homosexuality is illegal and punishable in Qatar. As per the laws, homosexuality can lead to three years of prison imprisonment and, in some cases, even a death penalty. Amid the preparations for the World Cup in a highly conservative environment, The Guardian presented a set of questions to the organising committee in Qatar, raising concerns for the LGBTQIA+ community. These questions focused on the possible discrimination on the basis of sexuality, accommodation in hotels, and other allowances. The authorities failed to give a satisfactory response. Instead, a general response was issued that read, “Everyone will be welcome to Qatar in 2022, regardless of their race, background, religion, gender, sexual … [Read more...] about No Safety Assurance To LGBTQIA+ Fans Planning To Attend FIFA World Cup In Qatar

ICE imposters are defrauding the frightened U.S. families of detainees
This story is co-published with Capital & Main On April 5, Mariana was at her usual spot on a Miami sidewalk selling hot dogs and grilled corn when her phone rang. She did not recognize the 1-800 number, and the caller said he was an Immigration and Customs Enforcement ( ICE ) official named Marcos Cruz. He knew Mariana's name, as well as the names of two of her nephews, brothers who had fled Nicaragua. Cruz knew they were being held at the Stewart Detention Center in rural Georgia. He said that a judge had granted her nephews a bond of $3,900. If she paid it, they would be set free the following day. The call was an answer to her prayers.
