Stone quarry accident: Controlled blast conducted to break rock to rescue last victim
As the lorry driven by stone quarry victim P. Rajendran has been located under a heap of stones, the rescuers, who conducted a controlled explosion on Friday to break the huge rock weighing more than 100 tonnes, firmly believe that they would reach him on Saturday after removing the stones. As 25-feet-tall huge rocks covering the 300-feet-deep quarry where Rajendran is supposed to be trapped had to be removed, the rocks were drilled since Friday morning at 32 spots to stuff gelatin for blasting the rocks, weighing more than 100 tonnes, in controlled fashion so as to reach him. Six explosives experts, including four Grade I Explosive Experts, were involved in the work after they checked the hardness of the rocks to be blasted in the controlled explosion. Of the four experts, three were from a private cement factory near here while the remaining one was a government Grade I Explosive Expert. As this work was completed around 2 p.m., the vehicles of the police, revenue and fire and … [Read more...] about Stone quarry accident: Controlled blast conducted to break rock to rescue last victim
Moscow launches a new phase of the conflict
This live blog is now closed. For the latest updates please check here . Russia has opened a long-anticipated new phase of the war in Ukraine , launching its eastern offensive in a bid to seize the country's industrial heartland. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov confirmed the move Tuesday , saying the Kremlin's goal was to achieve the “full liberation of the Donetsk and Luhansk republics,” which together make up the Donbas region. The full-scale assault on Ukraine's east came as the last fighters in Mariupol, the besieged port city that is crucial to Moscow's goals, continued to hold out despite a new Russian deadline to surrender. It also followed Russian strikes across the country, hitting supply lines and military infrastructure and killing at least seven people in the western city of Lviv . The United States is expected to announce another package of military aid, which is expected to be similar in size to the $800 million one the administration … [Read more...] about Moscow launches a new phase of the conflict
Trapped caver saved by rescue team in Spain
A badly-injured caver was rescued alive after workers waged a 17-hour battle to drill and blast a pathway through rock to reach her. A team of more than 50 rescuers was involved in the operation to save the 60-year-old woman from the Cueva de la Gitana in the Sierra de María-Los Vélez Natural Park in Spain when she suffered a fall that left her with head injuries. At the time of her rescue, the woman was conscious despite the severe head trauma and injuries to one of her wrists. Local media reported that she had to be carried out on a stretcher but the passages in the cave were too narrow. Video showed the helmeted rescuers in tight quarters as they snaked ropes and equipment far below the surface in the otherwise darkened space. Coordinated by Spain's Civil Guard, experts drilled and blasted their way through rock to make way for medical personnel to carry her to safety. Blasting a pathway took about two hours, but getting the injured spelunker to safety took another two … [Read more...] about Trapped caver saved by rescue team in Spain

"[But] prior increases of infections, in different waves of infection, have demonstrated that this travels across the country," said Dr. Rochelle Walensky, the CDC director, at a White House briefing with reporters. For an increasing number of areas, "we urge local leaders to encourage use of prevention strategies like masks in public indoor settings and increasing access to testing and treatment," she said. However, officials were cautious … [Read more...] about Health Officials Say Parts of U.S. May Consider Calls for Mask Wearing
