Revenge porn victims could be granted anonymity in review of online abuse laws
Revenge porn victims could be granted anonymity as part of a review of the laws around online abuse. MPs and campaigners have been calling for victims to be protected from further harassment after the sharing of private or sexual images or videos of a person without their consent was made a criminal offence in 2015. Survivor Lena Chen previously told The Independent how she had to leave the US and change her name when she was harassed for years after her ex-boyfriend’s posted of intimate photos online. The Law Commission is to consider the case for granting revenge porn victims automatic anonymity, which is currently standard for sexual offences, as part of a wide-ranging review. The independent body will also look at whether current laws are sufficient to tackle the emerging offence of “cyberflashing ”, where victims are sent unsolicited sexual photos and “deepfake” pornography that sees victims’ faces added to explicit videos. Aurora fires police Chief Vanessa Wilson; chief was subject of “smear campaign,” her attorney says
The Aurora city manager fired the city’s police chief Wednesday, saying he had general concerns about her leadership and that areas of the department needed “refocused attention.” The decision follows weeks of speculation as to the future of Chief Vanessa Wilson, who took over the leadership of the Aurora Police Department in 2020 as it careened through a series of high-profile controversies under its former chief. Wilson pledged to restore community trust in the department and implement reforms, even as the agency was thrust into the national spotlight following the death of Elijah McClain during a violent arrest by Aurora police. But she faced growing criticism and pressure as an increasing number of officers left the department and crime in the city spiked. “It is clear that Chief Wilson has prioritized community involvement,” City Manager Jim Twombly said in a news release announcing her firing. “However, the police chief also needs to effectively manage the … [Read more...] about Aurora fires police Chief Vanessa Wilson; chief was subject of “smear campaign,” her attorney says

Pawar power: oppn., right-wing trolls find a common target
From labelling him an atheist to claiming he started caste politics in Maharashtra, Opposition leaders and right-wing trolls in the State have found a common target in Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief Sharad Pawar. The attacks are not purely political; some have gone on to issue death threats, commented on his illness, age and even wished him hell. The veteran Maharashtra politician — whose stature has been acknowledged even by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who once had said in a public event that he used to take advice from him — has come under a well-co-ordinated attack from the right-wing ecosystem, both online and offline. The line of attack, however, has been different — while the BJP has questioned his faith, the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena has accused Mr. Pawar of “dividing” Maharashtra along caste lines. Last week, the Twitter handle of the Maharashtra BJP posted an edited video of Mr. Pawar’s public rally in Satara where he recited a verse by new-age Marathi poet … [Read more...] about Pawar power: oppn., right-wing trolls find a common target
