JANG JOO-YOUNG The author is a national news editor of the JoongAng Ilbo. “Little president” refers to someone who has as much influence and power as the president. The mayor of Seoul is one, overseeing administration for 10 million people, or one fifth of the Korean population, with a say in almost all public policies except for defense affairs. An education superintendent has mighty authority with independent power to name heads of education institutions and appoint teachers under the jurisdiction as well as managing a multibillion-dollar budget. Key confidantes of the president are also called little presidents: Justice Minister Han Dong-hoon is regarded as one in Yoon Suk-yeol presidency. Yoon, former prosecutor general, pushed the appointment of Han, seen as his most reliable loyalist in the prosecution, despite strong opposition from the Democratic Party (DP), which had been a ruling power before Yoon was inaugurated earlier this month. Like Yoon, Han gained favor with … [Read more...] about Effective administrators, not little presidents

First steps to sucess
The summit redefined the Korea-U.S. alliance, going beyond security to cover technology and global partnership. Although Seoul has tried to push bilateral ties to a new level, an economic and comprehensive alliance has been proclaimed for the first time. Korea, which mostly relied on U.S. for security, is on a more equal footing through technology backing. Biden devoted his first and last day in Korea to Samsung Electronics and Hyundai Motor. He would have been happy to return home with a $10-billion investment package from Hyundai, but a U.S. president seeking out Korean businesses is also something for the Korean people to be proud of. The security alliance has also been enhanced. The high-level Extended Deterrence Strategy and Consultation Group which was briefly operated during the Park Geun-hye administration was revived. The platform enabling the two allies to coordinate closely on the deployment of U.S. strategic assets could be a protection against the North Korean nuclear … [Read more...] about First steps to sucess
Half of European Buyers of Russian Energy Have Opened Ruble Accounts
Around half of the European customers of Russian energy giant Gazprom have opened euro-ruble accounts, according to Russia’s Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak. Russian Deputy Prime Minister Novak has claimed that half of the 54 companies across Europe that buy natural gas from Gazprom have opened a “k account” — a scheme that allows companies to get around Western sanctions and effectively pay for gas in rubles. “Moscow will make them known and that of the 54 companies, including large, medium, and small, that have contracts with Gazprom about half of them have already opened accounts, one in foreign currency and one in rubles,” Novak said, promising to name the companies, Il Giornale reports . The banking scheme allows companies to deposit euros or dollars. Gazprombank then converts them into rubles and places the rubles in a separate account owned by the purchaser, which is used to buy Russian gas. Transgender cyclist Emily Bridges ‘harassed and demonised’ after being excluded from competition
Transgender cyclist Emily Bridges has said she has been “harassed and demonised” after being prevented from racing in a women’s event this weekend. Bridges, 21, had been due to race against the likes of Dame Laura Kenny at the National Omnium Championships in Derby this weekend, her first race in the female category, but on Wednesday evening British Cycling announced that world governing body the UCI had ruled her ineligible. It is understood that although British Cycling had accepted she had met the requirements – current transgender regulations require riders to have had testosterone levels below five nanomoles per litre for a 12-month period prior to competition – the UCI has not yet granted her switch in licence. In a statement on social media, Bridges expressed frustration at the process, saying she had been in contact with both British Cycling and the UCI for the last six months, providing the medical evidence necessary, and has not yet been given a full … [Read more...] about Transgender cyclist Emily Bridges ‘harassed and demonised’ after being excluded from competition

Dealers say oil firms want them to curtail diesel, petrol sales
Petroleum dealers have written to the government flagging concerns over the increased pressure they are facing from state-owned oil marketing companies (OMCs) to restrict the sale of diesel at their outlets as more bulk consumers seek to take advantage of the relatively lower price at which the fuel is sold to retail buyers. “We have been advised to restrain sale to new customers and cater to only our existing customers,” Consortium of Indian Petroleum Dealers (CIPD) wrote to the oil industry coordinator in a letter, the contents of which were shared with The Hindu. “Fear of short supplies will cause panic,” CIPD President M. Narayana Prasad and General Secretary K. Suresh Kumar wrote, appealing to the companies not to ration fuel supplies. At the heart of the ‘diktat’ the CIPD has highlighted is a differential price - higher by as much as ₹25 per litre – that is charged to bulk diesel consumers such as transport corporations, private bus fleet operators, industries and … [Read more...] about Dealers say oil firms want them to curtail diesel, petrol sales
