Guns, Grenades Seized, 746 Arrests In ‘Biggest Ever’ UK Police Bust
British authorities have arrested 746 suspects, seized tens of millions in cash, dozens of firearms and high-value cars, 2 tonnes of drugs, and even grenades in the country’s “biggest ever law enforcement operation”. The operation followed the infiltration of a the EncroChat encrypted communications network used by organised criminals to arrange drugs deals and lethal “hits” on criminal rivals and others, connected to an illegal trade reaching across Britain and Continental Europe to the United Arab Emirates (UAE). EncroChat, according to the Motherboard team at Vice News, had been used gangsters to conduct their illicit business “in granular detail, with price lists, names of customers, and explicit references to the large quantities of drugs they sold” — believing that the fact their communications were “encrypted on the devices themselves” meant they were immune to interception by the authorities. Ultimately, their faith in the technology proved to be misplaced. Law … [Read more...] about Guns, Grenades Seized, 746 Arrests In ‘Biggest Ever’ UK Police Bust

Liz Cheney is walking a fine line as she tries to fend of primary challengers
On Tuesday, Representative Liz Cheney led the questioning of former Trump administration aide Cassidy Hutchinson about the former actions on January 6, 2021. But on Thursday evening, she was the one hit with a hail of questions as she faced off against four different primary challengers trying to unseat her from Wyoming’s at-large congressional district. Cheney is persona non grata in the Republican Party thanks to her vote to impeach former president Donald Trump and her continued criticisms of the party’s fealty to him. Her apostasy has already seen her ousted as House Republican Conference chairwoman, and has led Trump and House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy to back her main challenger, Harriet Hageman. Yet despite all this, MCheney has doubled down on her critiques of the party – not least in a speech at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library this week, in which she described what has befallen the US as a tragedy. “And the tragedy is that there are politicians in … [Read more...] about Liz Cheney is walking a fine line as she tries to fend of primary challengers

Now it’s BA.4: New subvariant fuels coronavirus surge in South Africa, where Omicron emerged
JOHANNESBURG — South Africa is seeing a rapid rise in coronavirus cases driven by yet another version of the virus, health experts say. Cases had been dropping in the country since February. But a new Omicron subvariant that scientists call BA.4 began pushing up cases last week, and they have risen rapidly since, said Salim Abdool Karim, who previously advised the government on its COVID-19 response. So far, there has been only a slight rise in hospitalizations and no increase in deaths, said Abdool Karim, who is a public health expert at the University of KwaZulu-Natal. South Africa is recording more than 6,000 coronavirus cases a day, up from a few hundred just a few weeks ago. The proportion of positive tests jumped from 4% in mid-April to 19% Thursday, according to official figures. Wastewater surveillance has also shown increases in coronavirus spread. The new mutant appears to be quickly achieving dominance over the original Omicron variant and other versions of the … [Read more...] about Now it’s BA.4: New subvariant fuels coronavirus surge in South Africa, where Omicron emerged

Water discharged from four crest gates of Harangi dam
Water from Harangi dam near Kushalnagar in Kodagu was released into the river through the four crest gates on Saturday following an increase in the inflow into the dam due to heavy rains in its catchment area. Madikeri MLA Appachu Ranjan offered ‘bagina’ to the brimming dam and 1,200 cusecs was discharged into the river after opening all four gates of the dam. A flood alert was issued on Friday after the inflow went up in view of heavy downpour in the catchment area. The dam engineers are expected to increase the outflow based on the extent of inflow and therefore the people living on the banks of Cauvery have been asked to move to safer places as a precautionary measure. Speaking to reporters, Mr. Ranjan said he had offered ‘bagina’ to the dam on July 16 last year. This year, ‘bagina’ was being offered much earlier since the dam is three feet short to attain its full reservoir level. However, water was being discharged much earlier for safety reasons. “All precautions have been … [Read more...] about Water discharged from four crest gates of Harangi dam
