Intense rain and heavy flooding caused at least 12 Russian workers to fall into a sewer where they were swept away on Sunday, reports said. According to several reports, workers in Moscow were cleaning the sewers, when water levels began to rise as heavy rain fell. At least 12 of the workers were swept away in the sewer. "Unfortunately, three workers have died, rescue workers have brought their bodies to the surface," the Russian Civil Defense reportedly said to the Interfax news agency on Sunday. Russian reports state that five of the workers managed to climb out of the sewer on their own, and four were rescued by emergency personnel and received medical attention. A video of one of the rescues was posted on Telegram by Mash, a Russian news outlet. The bodies of the three missing workers were found later on Sunday. "First, the body of one victim was found, then two," Lyudmila Nefedova, head of the press service of the Moscow prosecutor's office, told RIA Novosti. Macrovariable projections in uncertain times
The Fed has raised its benchmark interest rate again by a whopping 0.75%. The Reserve Bank of India has also been forced to raise interest rates further but also take other steps. These decisions in the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) meeting are based on what the members of the MPC see as the likely course of the economy in the months ahead. But, the trajectory of the world economy, and its likely impact on the Indian economy, is imponderable. So, Indian policymakers would face two crucial problems. First, the main uncertainty is due to Russia’s war on Ukraine and the resultant economic sanctions on Russia, as well as the zero-COVID-19 policy in China that repeatedly implements lockdowns leading to global supply bottlenecks. Second, policy has to base itself on data. If it is deficient, it introduces additional uncertainty, making projections for the future difficult and causing policies to fail. This will compound the problem that results from the global uncertainty. … [Read more...] about Macrovariable projections in uncertain times

An Observer of Catastrophe
Sybille Bedford, a German-born writer who has long lived in England, is not one of the twentieth century's best writers, but she is one of its most attractive literary curiosities. Born before World War I, she witnessed much of the tragedy, and enjoyed much of the beauty, that her volatile age had to offer. Bedford spent her childhood and youth in her father's decrepit schloss in Baden, in the stuffy and well-upholstered Berlin residence of other relatives, in Fascist Italy, in high bohemia on the Côte d'Azur in the 1920s, and in England. It was a rich and strange life, and in each of her four largely autobiographical novels she rendered its off-color luster and subtle moral gradations with humor and a remarkable tolerance that in no way implies an absence of judgment. The twentieth century displayed the human circus at its most grotesque, and Bedford had a ringside seat throughout the performance. Bedford is not only a novelist but also the author of books on legal issues and … [Read more...] about An Observer of Catastrophe
Kelis calls Beyoncé’s fans “a joke” as they swarm her IG after song spat
Kelis called Beyoncé's fans "a joke" on Wednesday, as she clapped back at them for mobbing one of her Instagram posts following a spat over a track being sampled. Beyoncé recently removed a sample of Kelis' 2003 hit "Milkshake" from her new album, Renaissance , after Kelis branded its use "theft," alleging that she had not been asked for permission to use it. Kelis also called Beyoncé's alleged actions "stupid and disrespectful." The original version of "Energy" featured an interpolation from "Milkshake," in which Beyoncé, 40, sang a variation of the iconic "la-la, la-la, la" from Kelis' hit. In light of the fallout, this has since been removed without comment from Beyoncé. However, it would appear that a faction of Beyoncé's devoted army of fans—collectively called the Beyhive—are not happy, as they swarmed Kelis' most recent Instagram post. Kelis, who turns 43 on August 21, took to the image-sharing platform to post a series of photos of herself donning an … [Read more...] about Kelis calls Beyoncé’s fans “a joke” as they swarm her IG after song spat
