Rishi Sunak said he will not allow a separation vote if elected prime minister and vowed to take on Scottish National Party leader Nicola Sturgeon. The UK prime minister and Conservative Party leadership candidate Sunak said Nicola Sturgeon, Scotland’s First Minister, poses a threat to the Union. “Nicola Sturgeon and the SNP pose an existential threat to our cherished union. We can’t just bury our heads in the sand and pretend they aren’t there – we need to stop them in their tracks,” Sunak said. Sunak was referring to his contender Liz Truss, the foreign secretary, who said Nicola Sturgeon is an attention-seeker. “I think the best thing we can do with Nicola Sturgeon is ignore her. I’m sorry, she’s an attention seeker, that’s all she is,” Truss said. Sunak will head to Scotland on Saturday for his Tory leadership campaign. Nicola Sturgeon earlier this year announced that her party wants to hold a second referendum in October 2023. Her government also released a draft … [Read more...] about Scottish Independence: Sunak Says He’ll Fight Sturgeon, Won’t Allow Second Referendum

What Food Crisis? EU Officials Leave Millions of Oranges Rotting in Port
(AFP) – Millions of boxes of oranges are spoiling in containers stranded at European ports as South Africa and the European Union lock horns in a dispute over import rules, citrus growers have said. South Africa, the world’s second largest exporter of fresh citrus after Spain, filed a complaint with the World Trade Organisation (WTO) last month after the EU introduced new plant and health safety requirements that orange farmers say threaten their survival. The measures came into force in July as ships were already at sea carrying hundreds of containers full of South African fruit to Europe, resulting in them being held up on arrival, South Africa’s Citrus Growers’ Association (CGA) says. “It’s a complete and utter disaster,” CGA’s CEO Justin Chadwick told AFP by phone. “Food that has fantastic quality and is safe is [just] sitting there — and this at a time when people are worried about food security.” The EU rules aim at tackling the potential spread of an insect called … [Read more...] about What Food Crisis? Taiwan update on China maps draws more than 1 billion views
A map of Taiwan appearing on China's Baidu and Gaode services has sparked massive interest in the country and the map has so far been viewed more than 1.3 billion times. China's social media platform Sina Weibo, similar to Twitter , had a "maps can show every street on Taiwan island" hashtag trending on its website. The Global Times , a Chinese state-affiliated publication, said that the Chinese online maps have detailed 2D images of cities like Taipei and Tainan since Friday. On the apps, the island was identified as Taiwan Province. Due to the significant interest from Chinese citizens, the map service also crashed, which resulted in the hashtag "Baidu map crashed" trending. Baidu told the The Global Times that it always identified the island as a province, according to related national regulations and laws, but it didn't clarify exactly when it started to provide detailed maps of the island. Baidu added that currently users can check real-time traffic conditions as … [Read more...] about Taiwan update on China maps draws more than 1 billion views
How were the States formed and how has the Indian map changed since 1947?
The story so far: On the “appointed day”, as Independence Day was referred to in the Indian Independence Act, 1947, British paramountcy lapsed in India, leading to the formation of two independent dominions- India and Pakistan. Pre-independence India consisted of state units, provinces and more than 550 scattered princely states. Nearly 114 of these, through the Instrument of Accession, had already joined India before August 15. The rest had the choice of joining either India or Pakistan, with most deciding to accede to the former. From then to now, as India completes 75 years of independence and has 28 States and eight Union Territories, the internal boundaries of the country have undergone several changes with States being reorganised in multiple phases, with different factors behind the redrawing of the map. Consolidation of the many princely states The idea that India would be a union of States after the departure of the British had been asserted by the Indian National … [Read more...] about How were the States formed and how has the Indian map changed since 1947?
Ukraine partisans can block Russia’s August “referendums”: front-line mayor
The exiled mayor of Ukraine's southern city of Melitopol—occupied by Russian troops in March—has said partisans across the south of the country plan to disrupt Moscow's phony referendums, which are now expected to be held later this month. Ivan Fedorov —who was abducted by Russian troops in March before being freed later that month in a special Ukrainian operation—told Newsweek that local partisans, special forces, and intelligence operatives will make it "impossible" for Russia to establish puppet separatist states in occupied Zaporizhzhia and Kherson oblasts. "They want to do it in August, but it's not possible," Fedorov said in a phone call on Monday from the city of Zaporizhzhia, less than 20 miles from the front line to the south. "In the last two weeks they have surveyed citizens to see who is ready to give support to the Russians," the mayor said. "We had a great result; less than 10 percent of our citizens who are still in Melitopol agreed to give support to the … [Read more...] about Ukraine partisans can block Russia’s August “referendums”: front-line mayor
Explosions near Crimea airfield could result in escalation of Ukraine war
If Ukraine is behind the series of explosions in the area of a Russian airbase in Crimea, it could result in an escalation in the war, which has been ongoing since Russia's invasion in late February, according to experts. Videos showed the blasts near the Saki airfield on Tuesday, and Russia's Defense Ministry said they were caused by detonated aviation ammunition, killing one and injuring several others, the Russian state-owned news agency RIA Novosti reported. But while Russia points away from an attack as the cause of the explosions, The New York Times reported that a senior Ukrainian military official with knowledge on the matter said that Ukraine was behind it. Newsweek was not able to independently verify the report that Ukraine was behind the blasts. Michael C. Kimmage, a professor and chair of the history department at the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C., told Newsweek that the war could "definitely" escalate if Ukraine was involved in the … [Read more...] about Explosions near Crimea airfield could result in escalation of Ukraine war
2022 Sets Record Fire Activity in Southwest Europe, Says EU
Blazes that have torched tens of thousands of hectares of forest in France, Spain, and Portugal have made 2022 a record year for wildfire activity in southwestern Europe, the EU’s satellite monitoring service said Friday. Amid a prolonged heatwave that saw temperature records tumble, the Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) said that France had in the last three months reached the highest levels of carbon pollution from wildfires since records began in 2003. It follows Spain registering its highest ever wildfire carbon emissions last month. CAMS said the daily total fire radiative power — a measure of the blazes’ intensity — in France, Spain, and Portugal in July and August was “significantly higher” than average. The service warned that a large proportion of western Europe was now in “extreme fire danger” with some areas of “very extreme fire danger”. “We have been monitoring an increase in the number and resulting emissions of wildfires as heatwave conditions … [Read more...] about 2022 Sets Record Fire Activity in Southwest Europe, Says EU
Dialogue of books: Navigating a turbulent world with literature’s map of imaginary places
In January 2020, David Damrosch, professor of comparative literature at Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts, was all set to take off for a book project on a journey whose structure was inspired by Jules Verne’s classic novel, Around the World in 80 Days . He would start off from London and work his way eastwards, crossing oceans and continents till he had circumnavigated the globe and wound up back in London. He would visit “memorable locations” and the books he associated with them, and in doing so discuss 80 books “both to see how literature enters the world and to think about how the world bleeds into literature.” Soon enough, however, along came the COVID-19 pandemic, putting a lid on his travel plans. Instead of abandoning his plans altogether, Damrosch took his itinerary to the Internet, and over the course of 16 weeks in that summer he discussed with readers “a worldly locale through five books each week,” a book for each weekday.
