Speaking at the European Council summit in Brussels on Thursday, the Prime Minister will call for a “proportionate” response to those inflicting harm on the economies and democracies of the EU. And she will tell fellow leaders it was time to “impose costs on all those who seek to attack us, regardless of the means they use to do so”. The call from European Council president Donald Tusk came as Mrs May urged her Cabinet to “stand together and stand firm” on Brexit, after negotiations stalled in the run-up to a crucial summit. CBI backs Greg Clark’s call for Brexit customs partnership
British businesses have lent their weight to Business Secretary Greg Clark’s call for a customs partnership with the European Union to help protect thousands of jobs in the UK’s manufacturing sector. The Confederation of British Industry warned that “hundreds of thousands of jobs across the UK depend” on frictionless trade with the EU as Tory Brexiteers ramp up the pressure on the Prime Minister to shelve plans for a customs partnership. Mr Clark told the Andrew Marr Show on Sunday that it was “absolutely right” that the UK leaves the customs union but added that “what we replace it with is of huge importance”. He added: “We have always said we will have a customs agreement that has the minimum of frictions. The EU’s chief Brexit negotiator said Europe had no intention of questioning the UK’s constitutional order but was seeking practical solutions to a complex problem. Many operational details have yet to be resolved surrounding the vexed question of the UK’s only land border with an EU state after Brexit and the issue is top of the agenda in Brussels, Mr Barnier has reiterated.
