News / UK and world by Press Association October 18, 2018, 12:03 am FacebookTwitterLinkedInWhatsAppEmail Sign up to our Daily newsletter Theresa May is to call for a “robust” new EU sanctions regime to deter cyber attacks. Speaking at the European Council summit in Brussels on Thursday, the Prime Minister will call for a “proportionate” response to those inflicting harm on the economies and democracies of the EU. And she will tell fellow leaders it was time to “impose costs on all those who seek to attack us, regardless of the means they use to do so”. Mrs May’s call comes shortly after the exposure of four suspected spies from Russia’s GRU military intelligence agency attempting to hack into the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons in The Hague. And it comes amid growing concern at Russia’s use of internet troll factories to disrupt elections and foment divisions within Western countries. … [Read more...] about May calls for new EU sanctions regime to hit back at cyber attacks

EU calls for new proposals from Theresa May to break Brexit deadlock

October 16, 2018 eveningtelegraph Leave a Comment

News / UK and world by Press Association October 16, 2018, 3:59 pm FacebookTwitterLinkedInWhatsAppEmail Sign up to our Daily newsletter The EU is demanding new “concrete proposals” from Theresa May on how to end the deadlock in Brexit talks, warning that a breakthrough may not be possible without further movement from the UK. The call from European Council president Donald Tusk came as Mrs May urged her Cabinet to “stand together and stand firm” on Brexit, after negotiations stalled in the run-up to a crucial summit. Mrs May will address the remaining 27 EU leaders before Wednesday’s Brussels meeting, which had been billed as “the moment of truth” for Brexit but now seems certain to pass without a deal on the UK’s withdrawal. Speaking after being briefed by the EU’s chief negotiator Michel Barnier, Mr Tusk said he saw “no grounds for optimism” ahead of the European Council summit. “As I see … [Read more...] about EU calls for new proposals from Theresa May to break Brexit deadlock

CBI backs Greg Clark’s call for Brexit customs partnership

May 6, 2018 telegraph Leave a Comment

British businesses have lent their weight to Business Secretary Greg Clark’s call for a customs partnership with the European Union to help protect thousands of jobs in the UK’s manufacturing sector. The Confederation of British Industry warned that “hundreds of thousands of jobs across the UK depend” on frictionless trade with the EU as Tory Brexiteers ramp up the pressure on the Prime Minister to shelve plans for a customs partnership. Mr Clark told the Andrew Marr Show on Sunday that it was “absolutely right” that the UK leaves the customs union but added that “what we replace it with is of huge importance”. He added: “We have always said we will have a customs agreement that has the minimum of frictions. That is crucial.” With deep divisions emerging in Theresa May’s Cabinet over the hybrid customs partnership proposal, the CBI’s director-general Carolyn Fairbairn welcomed Clark’s intervention and called … [Read more...] about CBI backs Greg Clark’s call for Brexit customs partnership
