A driver who became embroiled in a dispute with partygoers after they accused him of speeding, sprayed bullets into the crowd—but was shot to death by one of the revelers. The shootout happened at around 10:45 p.m. on Wednesday night (May 25) at an apartment complex on Renaissance Circle in Charleston, West Virginia. Charleston Police Department say several people had confronted Dennis Butler, 37, over claims he had driven dangerously through the area while children were playing outside, according to local news channel WSAZ. The police report, seen by WSAZ, says Butler left the area but then returned shortly afterwards with an AR 15-style rifle and started shooting at the group. Geologist Beaten up by ‘Angriest Octopus’ at Australian Beach, Left With Sting Marks
A swim on holiday at a Western Australia beach has resulted in a painful octopus “whipping” – and a video of the encounter that has gone viral. Geologist and author Lance Karlson was about to take a dip near the resort he and his family were staying at in Geographe Bay, on Australia’s southwest coast, when he spotted what he thought was the tail of a stingray emerging from the water and striking a seagull. Upon walking closer with his two-year-old daughter, he discovered it was an octopus, and took a video, which shows the animal in shallow water take a sudden strike in Karlson’s direction with its tentacles. “The octopus lashed out at us, which was a real shock,” Karlson said in emailed comments to Reuters. After setting up a sun protection tent for his family on the beach, Karlston put on goggles and went in the water alone to explore a collection of crab shells, which he believed were left by dead sea creatures. As he was swimming, he felt another whip across his arm – … [Read more...] about Geologist Beaten up by ‘Angriest Octopus’ at Australian Beach, Left With Sting Marks
Reimagining Australia: On Anthony Albanese’s Labor government
After nine years in the opposition, the Australian Labor Party , under the leadership of Anthony Albanese , is back in power. When 74.6% votes were counted, it won 75 seats in the 151-member House of Representatives; the conservative Liberal National Coalition secured 57 seats. More than a victory for Labor, which is still one seat short of absolute majority, this election will be remembered for the rout of the conservatives, who had 77 seats in the outgoing Assembly. The polls also saw a sizeable section of the Australian electorate voting for the Greens and independents, who campaigned on the planks of better environmental standards and anti-corruption policies. In an election where inflation and climate policy dominated the agenda, Scott Morrison, the conservative leader, failed to understand the public pulse. Even when the annual inflation number hit 5.1%, a 20-year high, the Morrison government took comfort in the argument that the unemployment rate was low. Mr. Morrison was … [Read more...] about Reimagining Australia: On Anthony Albanese’s Labor government
We must defeat Putin – the fate of civilisation depends on it
Since the last annual meeting of the World Economic Forum, the course of history has changed dramatically. Russia invaded Ukraine, shaking the European Union, which was established to prevent war from returning to the continent, to its very core. Even when the fighting stops, as it eventually must, the situation will never revert to the status quo ante . Indeed, the Russian invasion may turn out to be the beginning of World War III, and our civilisation may not survive it. The invasion of Ukraine did not come out of the blue. The world has been increasingly engaged over the past half-decade, or longer, in a struggle between two diametrically opposed systems of governance: open society and closed society. Let me define the differences as simply as I can. In an open society, the role of the state is to protect the freedom of the individual; in a closed society, the role of the individual is to serve the rulers of the state. Other issues that concern all humanity – … [Read more...] about We must defeat Putin – the fate of civilisation depends on it

Her daughter was shot on live TV. Now she’s marching to demand gun control
Alison Parker had a close relationship with her mom. On Mother's Day in 2015, she took both of her parents wine-tasting and hiking around the Blue Ridge Mountains in Virginia. And every Monday, she met her mom after her morning shift ended at the local news station to share lunch and do some shopping. "Those are the things I miss," Barbara Parker tells Newsweek . Marysville-Pilchuck Gunman’s Father Sentenced to Prison
Updated | The father of Jaylen Fryberg, who killed four friends and himself at Marysville-Pilchuck High School in Washington state in October 2014, was sentenced Monday to 24 months in federal prison and three years of probation, according to local news outlets. A jury in federal court had found Ray Fryberg Jr. guilty on six counts of illegally owning guns, including the one Jaylen used in the school shooting. The sentence is less than the 33 months in prison and three years of supervised release that federal prosecutors had recommended. Each count carried a maximum sentence of fines and 10 years in prison. Families of Jaylen's victims attended the sentencing and prosecutors read statements some of them had written. Lincoln Beauregard, a lawyer for the victims' families, tells Newsweek , "They appreciate the work of the Department of Justice, they appreciate the process. Some of them said that yeah, more time would have been good, but the bigger concern was that Raymond Fryberg … [Read more...] about Marysville-Pilchuck Gunman’s Father Sentenced to Prison
Donald Trump is facing increasing opposition from within the Republican Party he represents
Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump is coming under assault from some prominent members of his own party, who are using multiple advertisements among their efforts to prevent him from racking up delegates and clinching the nomination over GOP rivals Ted Cruz and John Kasich. More than 120 members of the GOP foreign policy establishment, including former advisers to President George W. Bush, have signed an open letter declaring the billionaire unfit for the highest office of the United States. Some said they are instead open to supporting Cruz, Trump's closest rival, or even the Democratic Party front-runner, Hillary Clinton, according to The Hill . Several admitted they would vote for Clinton if the general election match-up pits her against Trump. Cruz this month has received endorsements from ex-GOP rivals Jeb Bush, Lindsey Graham and Carly Fiorina . Even Mitt Romney, the 2012 Republican presidential nominee, publicly shared that he would support Cruz in Utah's … [Read more...] about Donald Trump is facing increasing opposition from within the Republican Party he represents
