Venus Williams hails “beast” Megan Rapinoe on Title IX anniversary

June 23, 2022 by www.newsweek.com

On the 50th anniversary of Title IX , the landmark legislation mandating equal opportunities for men's and women's participation in sports, tennis champion Venus Williams hailed soccer star Megan Rapinoe, calling her a "beast." In an exclusive essay for Newsweek's My Turn, Williams, 42, one of the all-time greatest American tennis players, with seven Grand Slam singles titles and four Olympic gold medals under her belt, had nothing but praise for the American professional soccer player who has long advocated for equal pay in her field. Rapinoe is a forward for OL Reign of the National Women's Soccer League and was recently named to the U.S. women's team for July's CONCACAF W Championship, the qualifier for the 2023 World Cup and 2024 Olympics . In 2019, Rapinoe, along with her fellow teammate, Alex Morgan, sued U.S. soccer, her employer, in a gender discrimination case. The 36-year-old also advocates for fairness, bodily autonomy, Black lives, transgender inclusion in … [Read more...] about Venus Williams hails “beast” Megan Rapinoe on Title IX anniversary

Female referee Yoshimi Yamashita at Qatar World Cup wants the game to shine

June 28, 2022 by www.thehindu.com

Japanese referee Yoshimi Yamashita agrees with Pelé or whoever it was decades ago that first described football as the “beautiful game.” Yamashita is one of three women picked by FIFA to be referees at the men's World Cup in Qatar, which opens on November 21. It is the first time a woman will be in charge on football's largest stage. She sees her job this way: Let the game shine, as it should. Megan Rapinoe Backs Trans Athletes, Says ‘Your Kid’s High School Volleyball Team Just Isn’t That Important’

June 21, 2022 by dailycaller.com

Soccer star Megan Rapinoe defended biological males competing in female sports in an interview with Time Magazine published Sunday. “I’m 100% supportive of trans inclusion,” Rapinoe said when asked about bills which banned biological males from competing in women and girls sports . “Frankly, I think what a lot of people know is versions of the right’s talking points because they’re very loud,” Rapinoe continued. “They’re very consistent, and they’re relentless.” Rapinoe told Time that sports was not as important as inclusivity of transgender athletes, and that the lives of trans kids were at stake in the debate. Misty May-Treanor: I’m a beach volleyball champion—Title IX was life-changing

June 23, 2022 by www.newsweek.com

I looked back at where my whole journey started and the words Title IX kept popping into my head. It's the movement that helped progress women's sport. And it's one that opened the door for me to pursue my dream. As a young girl, I wrote a report about sports and had to interview my one living grandmother, on my mom's side. I learned that she couldn't participate in some sports, which were considered too grueling for girls. In some instances, they didn't even offer girls sports. Now, as an athlete, it's hard to fathom the idea of not being introduced to sports, let alone allowed to play, or that sports weren't offered because of your sex. My grandmother eventually picked up tennis and along with my grandfather had three children, who all picked up a racket and competed in that sport. The tennis gene would carry on through that side of the family and unfortunately or fortunately, I was the only one not to play. My grandmother was always worried about my choices of soccer … [Read more...] about Misty May-Treanor: I’m a beach volleyball champion—Title IX was life-changing

Protests and celebrations as Supreme Court overturns Roe v. Wade: Live updates

June 25, 2022 by www.nbcnews.com

Protests continued in cities across the country Saturday after the Supreme Court's decision to overturn the landmark Roe v. Wade ruling that had guaranteed the right to abortion in the United States. As states began to enact abortion bans and clinics stopped offering the procedure, large crowds gathered in cities such as New York, Los Angeles and Atlanta, some jubilant, others dismayed at the decision that stripped away women’s constitutional right to abortion. Both sides predicted the fight over abortion would continue. Key highlights: President Joe Biden called it a “sad day” for the U.S. and said it would be up to voters in November to select candidates who would protect a host of rights — not just abortion but also marriage equality and the right to contraception. Centrist Sens. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., and Susan Collins, R-Maine, suggested they were misled by Justices Brett Kavanaugh and Neil Gorsuch, two key votes in the decision to overturn Roe.
