As the second wave of COVID-19 overwhelmed India and the world, the real economy indicators moderated through April-May 2021, senior officials of the Reserve Bank of India wrote in the RBI’s monthly bulletin. “The biggest toll of the second wave is in terms of a demand shock — loss of mobility, discretionary spending and employment, besides inventory accumulation” while the aggregate supply was less impacted, they wrote. “The resurgence of COVID-19 has dented but not debilitated economic activity in the first half of Q1... Although extremely tentative at this stage, the central tendency of available diagnosis is that the loss of momentum is not as severe as at this time a year ago,” they added. In an article on ‘State of the Economy’, the officials including Deputy Governor Michael Debabrata Patra observed that agriculture remained robust at this critical time and industrial production surged after a two-month contraction on the tailwinds of a large favourable base effect. SK bioscience’s Covid-19 vaccine clears major hurdle
SK bioscience's GBP510, Korea's first homegrown Covid-19 vaccine [SK BIOSCIENCE] SK bioscience's Covid-19 vaccine candidate won approval recommendation from the Central Pharmaceutical Affairs Council (CPAC) under the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety. That's the second hurdle SKYCovione cleared to get formal use approval, and the toughest. The Ministry of Food and Drug Safety reviews drug candidates in three phases, so only one remains. "Based on the overall data regarding safety and efficacy, the CPAC advised that we could approve the use of SKYCovione," the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety said Monday. The review was done by 12 outside experts and seven experts from the ministry. According to the data, SKYCovione had 2.93 times more neutralizing antibodies titers against the virus than AstraZeneca's vaccine. It also demonstrated higher immunogenicity. SKYCovione's Phase 3 clinical trials were comparative-style trials, which compare the immunogenicity of an … [Read more...] about SK bioscience’s Covid-19 vaccine clears major hurdle
Russia ‘pouring fire’ on Ukrainian city as offensive mounts
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 3 SLOVIANSK, Ukraine (AP) — Russia was mounting an all-out assault on the last Ukrainian stronghold in the eastern Luhansk region, “pouring fire" on the city of Lysychansk from the ground and air, the local governor said Monday, as Western leaders met to discuss ways of bolstering support for Kyiv. Luhansk Gov. Serhiy Haidai said Russian forces were pummeling Lysychansk after capturing the neighboring city of Sievierodonetsk in recent days. It's part of a stepped-up Russian offensive to wrest the broader Donbas region from Ukrainian government control in what Western experts say has become the new main goal of President Vladimir Putin's war in Ukraine, now in its fifth month. “They’re pouring fire on the city both from the air and from the ground. After the takeover of Sievierodonetsk, the enemy army has concentrated all its forces on capturing (our) last stronghold in the Luhansk … [Read more...] about Russia ‘pouring fire’ on Ukrainian city as offensive mounts

Monkeypox isn’t ‘Black’ or ‘gay’ – it’s global
It’s been over 100 years since the Spanish Flu outbreak swept across the world. It is a disease that has become synonymous with the Covid-19 pandemic , a cautionary tale of the destruction a flu virus can have on a global population. But did you know it is not actually Spanish? That the disease itself likely did not originate in Spain? Instead, it is named the “Spanish” flu because the Spanish media reported on this new and deadly disease, whilst other countries, beaten down by the First World War and wanting to keep morale up, simply did not . Understandably, Spain was none too happy about being saddled with “ownership” of the killer virus, preferring to pass the buck, locally calling the H1N1 influenza strain the “French flu” and the “Soldier of Naples.” But the name stuck, all because the media at the time had hit on an “easy” shorthand for a complicated disease. It may make sense to use these simple shorthands when reporting disease outbreak, but they are not … [Read more...] about Monkeypox isn’t ‘Black’ or ‘gay’ – it’s global
Donald Trump backs surefire primary candidates in bid to boost success rate
Donald Trump has given an 11th-hour endorsement to a host of sitting members of Congress on the eve of the next round of Republican primaries. The former president backed candidates hoping to win their respective elections in Utah, Oklahoma and Illinois on Tuesday. While the apparent influence of a Trump endorsement has been the focal point in some GOP primaries, such as J.D. Vance's victory in the GOP Senate primary in Ohio or Mehmet Oz's eventual win in the Pennsylvania Senate primary, the latest batch of endorsements from the current president pose almost next to no risk. As with a large majority of Trump's endorsed candidates in primaries across the country, the former president has backed incumbents, who very rarely lose midterm elections, never mind party primaries. The lateness of the announcements may suggest Trump is attempting to boost the figures on his apparent knack for picking eventual winners in GOP primaries following a recent bout of losses in Georgia . … [Read more...] about Donald Trump backs surefire primary candidates in bid to boost success rate
Sean Hannity attacks Marie Yovanovitch, calling her a “narcissistic diplomat snowflake”
Fox News host Sean Hannity railed Friday against former U.S. ambassador to Ukraine Marie Yovanovitch as a "narcissistic diplomatic snowflake" in his latest defense of President Donald Trump. Trump himself received widespread criticism and allegations of witness intimidation for ridiculing Yovanovitch on Twitter during her testimony before House lawmakers Friday. But Hannity, one of Trump's most prominent cheerleaders on Fox News, labeled her and House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff "liars" and narcissists. Hannity described her as a "snowflake" for testifying Friday about attorney Rudy Giuliani and other Trump administration officials leading a smear campaign against her. Although Trump's tweet did not directly threaten Yovanovitch, the law also covers intimidation and harassment, which is an impeachable offense punishable by up to three years in prison. Hannity followed the president's lead and repeatedly labeled Yovanovitch a self-important official looking to make … [Read more...] about Sean Hannity attacks Marie Yovanovitch, calling her a “narcissistic diplomat snowflake”
Five highlights from former Ukraine ambassador Marie Yovanovitch’s testimony at Day 2 impeachment hearing
Former U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine Marie Yovanovitch testified for hours on Friday about being removed from her post and attacks on her from President Donald Trump as part of the House Democrats' ongoing impeachment inquiry. Yovanovitch appeared before the House Intelligence Committee for a public hearing and was the third witness to testify to Congress this week about the Ukraine controversy. On Wednesday, diplomat William Taylor and State Department official George Kent gave damning testimony against the president. Yovanovitch was appointed ambassador under several different presidents, both Republican and Democrat, and began serving in Ukraine in August 2016. In May 2019, she was abruptly removed from her post even though, she says, her bosses assured her she'd done nothing wrong. The reasoning behind her dismissal has become a major focus of the House investigation of the president's conduct toward Ukraine. Yovanovitch told Congress that Trump and his personal attorney Rudy … [Read more...] about Five highlights from former Ukraine ambassador Marie Yovanovitch’s testimony at Day 2 impeachment hearing
William Barr accuses Democrats of “scorched-earth, no-holds-barred war” against Trump
Attorney General William Barr gave his most vociferous defense of President Donald Trump on Friday and accused his political opponents of trying to upend the Trump administration. In an hour-long speech at the Federalist Society—a largely Conservative and influential legal group—Barr hit out at Democrats for trying to dismiss voters who elected Trump by "using every tool and maneuver to sabotage" his administration. "In waging a scorched-earth, no-holds-barred war of resistance against this administration, it is the left that is engaged in a systematic shredding of norms and undermining the rule of law," Barr said. Barr's comments came a week after the Washington Post reported that he declined a request from Trump to hold a press conference to state that there was no illegality in a July phone call between the president and his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelenskiy. The call is central to Democrats' impeachment probe into whether Trump was withholding military aid in order … [Read more...] about William Barr accuses Democrats of “scorched-earth, no-holds-barred war” against Trump
Subway worker shot dead by customer after argument over ‘too much mayo’
A subway worker was shot dead in front of her son on Sunday after an argument with a customer "about too much mayonnaise on his sandwich," the restaurant owner has told. Police said officers responded to the shooting at the downtown Atlanta gas station, in Northside Drive Southwest, about 6.30 p.m. local time. A second worker was hospitalized with injuries, Fox5 Atlanta reports. Restaurant owner Willie Glenn told local reporters: "Believe it or not, it was about too much mayonnaise on his sandwich. "He decided to escalate the situation and from there, that's when all hell broke loose." He added that the employee who was killed had her son in the store when it happened. He added: "One of the young ladies who was killed today, her son was in the store. She had a young son that had to witness all of this," he said. An on-duty manager returned fire at the suspect but missed, Glenn said. The two employees shot had worked at the restaurant for three or four weeks, he added. … [Read more...] about Subway worker shot dead by customer after argument over ‘too much mayo’
