New Colombian president pledges to protect rainforest
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 9 RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) — Gustavo Petro, Colombia’s first elected leftist president, will take office in August with ambitious proposals to halt the record-high rates of deforestation in the Amazon rainforest. Petro has promised to limit agribusiness expansion into the forest, and create reserves where Indigenous communities and others are allowed to harvest rubber, acai and other non-timber forest products. He has also pledged income from carbon credits to finance replanting. “From Colombia, we will give humanity a reward, a remedy, a solution: not to burn the Amazon rainforest anymore, to recover it to its natural frontier, to give humanity the possibility of life on this planet," Petro, wearing an Indigenous headdress, said to a crowd in the Amazon city of Leticia during his campaign. But to do that he first needs to establish reign over large, … [Read more...] about New Colombian president pledges to protect rainforest
Protein Study Could Pave Way for New Multiple Sclerosis Therapy
Scientists in Germany are cautiously optimistic about new multiple sclerosis therapy possibilities after decoding the functions of two crucial proteins. Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a disease in which the insulating covers of nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord are damaged. There is no known cure, and treatments attempt to improve function after an attack and prevent new attacks. Almost 3 million people globally suffer from MS. Now, researchers at Ruhr University in Bochum, Germany, have announced a breakthrough in the investigation of the proteins Tenascin C and Tenascin R. MS is the most common demyelinating disease, or illnesses of the nervous system in which the myelin sheath of neurons is damaged. This damage impairs the conduction of signals in the affected nerves. The reduction in conduction can cause deficiency in sensation, movement and cognition. The myelination process requires the migration, proliferation, and differentiation of so-called oligodendrocyte … [Read more...] about Protein Study Could Pave Way for New Multiple Sclerosis Therapy
‘Elvis’ Fact or Fiction: Colonel Tom Parker Biographer on What’s Real and Not in Baz Luhrmann Biopic
Click here to read the full article. Does the phrase “That’s All Right, Mama” apply to the new “ Elvis ” movie… as in, “that’s all correct, ma’am”? No one is probably expecting that ; any practiced watcher of biopics knows virtually any example will take deep liberties with the facts for dramatic purposes. And maybe it’s a given that a director who puts hip-hop and hard rock on his period-film soundtracks, as Baz Luhrmann does, might favor effect over total verisimilitude. Still, “Elvis” is right on enough counts — literally or spiritually — that it’s worth trying to separate fact from fiction in the movie’s narrative of Elvis Presley (played by Austin Butler) and his nearly career-long manager, Colonel Tom Parker (Tom Hanks). There may be no one better to go to who can provide the truth on both Presley and “the Colonel,” in tandem, than the latter’s biographer, Alanna Nash. Nash, a veteran music journalist, published “The Colonel: The Extraordinary Story of Colonel … [Read more...] about ‘Elvis’ Fact or Fiction: Colonel Tom Parker Biographer on What’s Real and Not in Baz Luhrmann Biopic
Brit engineer ‘knows where missing MH370 plane is’ – but says some ‘don’t want it found’
An MH370 expert has claimed he knows the exact location of the lost plane. All 239 passengers and crew on board the Malaysia Airlines flight vanished along with the plane on March 8, 2014. British aerospace engineer Richard Godfrey claims he has narrowed down the search area for the aircraft to just 115 square miles, the Daily Star reports. The plane disappeared while flying from Kuala Lumpur, in Malaysia, to Beijing, China, and is believed to have crashed. Mr Godfrey believes he has now pinpointed the wrecked aircraft's location to 33.177°S 95.300°E. Marine robotics company Ocean Infinity announced at the 8th anniversary of the disappearance that they'll start a fresh search early 2023, in conjunction with Mr Godfrey. Marine robotics company Ocean Infinity has established a new search area for the plane Ocean Infinity will use newly built "cutting-edge" autonomous robotic vessels to scour the area that covers 88 nautical miles wide by 183 nautical miles long. … [Read more...] about Brit engineer ‘knows where missing MH370 plane is’ – but says some ‘don’t want it found’
Forests as Big as France Have Grown Back in The Last 20 Years, Research Shows
From Mongolia to southern Brazil, forests big enough to cover France have grown back during the last 20 years, but the gains did not make up for losses elsewhere, a study found on Tuesday. An analysis of satellite data by a team of researchers led by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), a conservation group, revealed that almost 59 million hectares (146 million acres) of forests have regenerated since 2000. That much forest has the potential to absorb 5.9 gigatonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) – more than the annual emissions of the United States, according to the study. “The data show the enormous potential of natural habitats to recover when given the chance to do so,” said John Lotspeich, executive director of Trillion Trees, the coalition of environmental groups behind the study. “But it isn’t an excuse for any of us to wait around for it to happen”. The research looked at forests that have grown back spontaneously or with little human help, such as planting native trees or … [Read more...] about Forests as Big as France Have Grown Back in The Last 20 Years, Research Shows
Pence Was a Jan. 6 Hero, but He’s Still a Big Lie Coward
Danger loomed on Jan. 6 for Mike Pence and his family, as the vice president stayed the course to fulfill what the Constitution required him to do in certifying the 2020 election. Our democratic institutions held because Pence refused to go along with Trump’s pressure campaign, and for that he deserves to be called a “hero.” But now he’s putting Jan. 6 in the rearview mirror , calling it “a tragic day ” that Democrats are using “to distract attention” from their failed policies. Pence’s brief foray into heroism took real courage. He held steadfast as Trump-incited rioters stormed the Capitol, throughout a day that went into the wee hours, before Congress finally completed its work and certified Joe Biden as the next president. Pence, under siege, refused a Secret Service demand that he get into a car that would take him away from the Capitol. He knew if he left it would halt the certification process and prompt a constitutional crisis. Pence deserves full credit … [Read more...] about Pence Was a Jan. 6 Hero, but He’s Still a Big Lie Coward
