Congress chintan shivir | Absence of English version of Udaipur Declaration raises eyebrows

May 16, 2022 by www.thehindu.com

With the absence of an English version of the Udaipur Declaration on the concluding day of the Nav Sankalp chintan shivir raising questions, Congress functionaries were hard pressed to offer an explanation on Monday. In a first, the Udaipur Declaration document was only in Hindi and the Nav Sankalp chintan shivir stood out from all the previous chintan shivirs in that sense. Dismissing media reports that the Declaration was made available only in Hindi to reach out to the Hindi belt States, an office bearer told The Hindu that the English version could not be circulated among delegates and the media because of discrepancies. Sources confirmed that an English version was read out at the meeting of the Congress Working Committee (CWC) that approved the final Declaration. However, different versions are given to explain what followed thereafter. Leaders involved in the preparation process claimed that the 15-page resolution was very ‘poorly’ drafted and would have had to be … [Read more...] about Congress chintan shivir | Absence of English version of Udaipur Declaration raises eyebrows

In the explosive interview with Oprah, Harry and Meghan made claims a member of the family had expressed 'concerns' about the colour of Archie's skin before he was born. Putin keeps “Nazism” focus on Ukraine as Russians point to NATO hopeful

May 16, 2022 by www.newsweek.com

Russian President Vladimir Putin reportedly said Monday that Ukraine is the only country that encourages "Nazism" at the state level, and some Russians are now accusing NATO hopeful Sweden of having a similar position. "But nowhere at the state level are the Nazis glorified. Nowhere," Putin said during a Moscow summit, according to Russian-state-owned news agency Ria Novosti. "And nowhere in civilized countries are thousands of neo-Nazi torchlight processions with neo-Nazi symbols encouraged by the authorities. This is not done anywhere. Unfortunately, this is happening in Ukraine." Putin has repeatedly declared that one of Russia's goals in invading Ukraine is the "denazification" of its neighbor , but Ukraine, whose president is Jewish, has strongly refuted the allegations that its government is led by Nazis. Meanwhile, as Putin has focused on purported Nazis in Ukraine, posters have reportedly emerged on Moscow's streets accusing some famous Swedish figures of supporting … [Read more...] about Putin keeps “Nazism” focus on Ukraine as Russians point to NATO hopeful

Prince Charles allies accused of briefing against Queen after Diana’s death

May 16, 2022 by www.newsweek.com

Prince Charles' palace allies played an "unpleasant game of one-upmanship" with Queen Elizabeth II 's staff in the days after Princess Diana's death, according to a new biography. Andrew Morton caused a political storm in the 1990s when his book Diana: Her True Story revealed Charles' affair with Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall, for the first time. Now he has written a new book, The Queen , which details how courtiers loyal to the Prince of Wales attempted to shield the future king from the public's wrath. The book quotes an official present with the royals in the week after Diana's death, who reportedly said: "One of the most dangerous things which took place during those fraught days was that the two palaces were totally at odds with each other." Morton wrote: "In the early stages, the prince's spin doctors at St James's Palace tried to portray Charles as decisive and democratic while painting all the Queen's men as dithering, delaying and hiding behind precedent … [Read more...] about Prince Charles allies accused of briefing against Queen after Diana’s death

What Vladimir Putin has said about Finland and Sweden joining NATO

May 16, 2022 by www.newsweek.com

Russian President Vladimir Putin has been a vocal critic of Finland and Sweden since reports emerged that they were seeking to join NATO in the wake of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Since Russia invaded its neighbor on February 24, both Finland and Sweden have been considering ending decades of military neutrality to join the 30-nation alliance, contradicting Putin's war aims while doing so. Putin has repeatedly said that the eastward expansion of NATO was the reason why his country invaded Ukraine. The war has killed thousands of people on both sides and displaced millions more. Sweden followed Finland on Monday and confirmed it will apply to join NATO. Finland has an over 800-mile border with Russia and has fought two wars against the country in the past, and it has become increasingly concerned about its security following Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Moscow has repeatedly warned that there will be "retaliatory steps" to the two countries' move to join the … [Read more...] about What Vladimir Putin has said about Finland and Sweden joining NATO

North Korea brags about baby formula in apparent dig at U.S. shortage

May 16, 2022 by www.newsweek.com

A bizarre new article from North Korean state media bragged about leader Kim Jong Un 's personal assistance in creating the nation's baby formula recipe, in what appeared to be a dig at U.S. formula shortages. A translation of a Voice of Korea article published Tuesday local time said that Kim oversaw the production of baby formula by taste-testing batches and offering advice on how the product could become better. The article was translated into English by KCNA Watch, a South Korea-based outlet that monitors and translates media from the North. The article stated that Kim placed a call to a senior official of the Pyongyang Municipal Committee around 4 a.m. on September 15, 2021, to discuss the production of formula. "Kim Jong Un said he had just tasted the diluted dry milk produced in Pyongyang City for trial and pointed out the shortcomings one by one," it said. "He told the senior official that it is necessary for the officials of the relevant sector to study such … [Read more...] about North Korea brags about baby formula in apparent dig at U.S. shortage

Southwest monsoon debuts over Andaman & Nicobar islands

Southwest monsoon has advanced into the Andaman and Nicobar islands on Monday, the India Meteorological Department said here, signalling the start of the four-month seasonal rains that are crucial to the largely agri-dependent economy. The Andaman and Nicobar islands and adjoining areas have been experiencing rainfall due to strengthening south-westerly winds in the lower tropospheric levels, the weather office said. “Conditions are favourable for further advance of southwest monsoon into some more parts of south Bay of Bengal, entire Andaman Sea & Andaman Islands and some parts of east-central Bay of Bengal during next 2-3 days,” the IMD said in a statement here.
