Spanish, not English, is the most all-American language

· May 28, 2018 ·

By Gustavo Arellano Is it dangerous to speak Spanish in public in Trump's America? Well, sí! Just this month, we've seen a lawyer threaten to call ICE after he overheard people in a restaurant in Manhattan speak in Spanish, and a Border Patrol agent in Montana detain two Mexican-American women for 40 minutes because he heard the bilingual women chatting en español, because the language "is very unheard of up here," according to la migra man. But there are so many more examples! There was the Kentucky woman at a JC Penney in Louisville who screamed, "Go back to wherever the fuck you come from" to two Latinas. The Miami mujer who says she was kicked out of a UPS store for not speaking English. The New Jersey high school teacher who told her Latino students to "speak American." My favorite incident still remains the Okie who railed at a Latina at a Goodwill that "on this side of the Red River, north of the Rio Grand, north of the Red River, we speak English and English only." … [Read more...] about Spanish, not English, is the most all-American language

FA announces two-week winter break for English soccer

· June 8, 2018 ·

(Reuters) – The English FA, Premier League and English Football League announced on Friday that they would implement a two-week, mid-season break in February from the 2019-20 season onwards. Premier League matches will still be played every weekend over the period, the FA said in a statement http://www.thefa.com/news/2018/jun/08/mid-season-break-confirmed-080618, with five games being held on the first weekend and five on the second. As a result, FA Cup fifth-round matches will be moved to mid-week and fifth-round replays will be replaced by games which end in a draw going to extra-time and penalties. “This is a significant moment for English football and one that we believe will greatly benefit both club and country,” said FA Chief Executive Martin Glenn. “It’s no secret that we have a very congested fixture calendar and over recent years we have been working with the whole game to find a solution.” The introduction of a winter break brings the … [Read more...] about FA announces two-week winter break for English soccer

The Latest: Trump notes border agent’s ‘perfect English’

· August 20, 2018 ·

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Latest on President Donald Trump’s tribute to federal immigration officials (all times local): 4:25 p.m. President Donald Trump invited a U.S. Border Patrol agent to the podium during a White House event to pay tribute to federal immigration officials and joked that the agent could speak “perfect English.” Trump asked the agent, Adrian Anzaldua, to discuss his apprehension of a smuggler accused of locking 78 migrants inside a truck near Laredo, Texas, about a week ago. Trump also appeared to refer to U.S. Customs and Border Protection, or CBP, as CBC during Monday’s event. CBC stands for Congressional Black Caucus, among other things. Trump says immigration agents are doing important, necessary work. He lambasted Democrats who have called for the abolishment of Immigration and Customs Enforcement. He said: “Most importantly let me extend my gratitude to every law enforcement professional representing ICE and CBC.” ___ 2:50 … [Read more...] about The Latest: Trump notes border agent’s ‘perfect English’

Trump tweet warns against spreading false news about hurricanes

· September 14, 2018 ·

Reis Thebault, The Washington Post Published 8:36 am PDT, Friday, September 14, 2018 Early Friday Morning, President Donald Trump urged Americans not to spread rumors or false information about the impending Hurricane Florence - exactly one day after the president himself did just that about Hurricane Maria. Trump retweeted FEMA's announcement that the agency had set up a "rumor control page" to help keep the storm facts straight. "During disasters, it's critical to avoid spreading false information. Always check with official sources before sharing," read the FEMA tweet, which Trump shared shortly before 8 a.m. He also retweeted two other messages from FEMA, one in Spanish and one in English, advising residents that "Today is the last day to evacuate" and that "your window of time to leave is closing rapidly." Except, by the time Trump shared the post, the information was stale. If residents in the storm's path were to heed this call Friday, they'd be leaving their … [Read more...] about Trump tweet warns against spreading false news about hurricanes
