Rich nations hit brakes on climate aid to poor at UN talks

Rich countries including the European Union and the United States have pushed back against efforts to put financial help for poor nations suffering the devastating effects of global warming firmly on the agenda for this year's U.N. climate summit. Observers and campaigners attending a ten-day preparatory meeting in Bonn , Germany, that's wrapping up Thursday expressed frustration at the resistance shown by developed nations to formally discussing how poor countries can get more aid when they're hit by climate disasters. “Rich countries, particularly the EU, spiked the discussion about loss and damage at every single turn," said Teresa Anderson of the campaign group ActionAid International. Martin Lewis says he was rejected by House of Lords as he was too busy

Consumer expert Martin Lewis has said he was turned down for a peerage - as he was too busy. The MoneySavingExpert revealed that he applied for a place in the House of Lords but said he had been "honest" that he might not have time to attend many debates. In an interview with the BBC's Political Thinking podcast, Mr Lewis said he was recently grilled by the House of Lords Appointments Commission over his bid for a crossbench peerage. But he said he told the commission he was "very busy" with his role as a consumer champion and looking after his daughter. Mr Lewis has become a formidable critic of the Government's efforts to tackle the cost of living crisis as pressures mount on household budgets. Normal Life Affected as Heavy Rain Inundates Low-lying Areas of 3 North Bengal Districts

Low-lying areas of three districts in the northern part of West Bengal – Jalpaiguri, Alipurduar, and Coochbehar -have been inundated following incessant rainfall over the past few days, officials said Saturday. Bhasusubba and Champadanga in Mal Block and areas such as Dhupguri, Moinaguri, and Sukanta Nagar in Jalpaiguri district are reeling under a flood-like situation, they said. Meanwhile, the Teesta river’s Gajoldoba barrage has been releasing water every hour due to heavy rainfall in Bhutan and Dooars region. The barrage has released 1802.82 cumec water at 1 pm on Saturday, the Assistant Engineer of the Irrigation Department, in Jalpaiguri, Tanai Talukdar said. The Jalpaiguri district administration and the town’s Municipality have started distributing relief materials to the affected people of the low-lying areas.
