Ukraine is seeking an opportunity to speak “directly” with Chinese leader Xi Jinping to help end its war with Russia, President Volodymyr Zelensky said, the South China Morning Post reported on Thursday. In an interview with SCMP, the Ukrainian leader urged China to use its outsize political and economic influence over Russia to bring an end to the fighting. “It’s a very powerful state. It’s a powerful economy … So (it) can politically, economically influence Russia. And China is [also a] permanent member of the UN Security Council,” the report quoted Zelenskiy as saying. Meanwhile, Zelensky told Australian university students that China must not help Russia in its war against his homeland and remain at least neutral. Zelenskyy addressed 21 Australian universities Wednesday in an online discussion hosted by the Australian National University in Canberra. Questioned by a student about Chinas stance, Zelenskyy said he would prefer Beijing join countries including the United … [Read more...] about ‘It’s a Very Powerful State’: Zelensky Seeks Direct Talks With China’s Xi to Help ‘End War With Russia’

Nolte: 11 Ways Kathleen Kennedy Killed the ‘Star Wars’ Golden Goose
Had you told me in 2015 that as a film franchise Star Wars would be dead in five years, that it would survive only as a television show, I would have called you crazy. I would have said, Lucas couldn’t kill Star Wars with those still-born prequels! TeeeVeee? You must be out of your mind! I also would have said, Do you know who’s in charge of Star Wars now? Disney, you dolt. You know, Marvel’s Disney? Pixar’s Disney? Fifty-percent of the American box office Disney? The same Disney that’s been dry-humping the same 25 movies for the last 35 years into gold Disney? Disney is Disney. Disney bats a thousand. Disney does everything right. But here we are , it’s 2020, and as a film franchise Star Wars is dead. Oh, sure, this latest trilogy made boatloads of money. But the diminishing returns continue to diminish. By this time (day 12), The Last Jedi had brought in $ 423 million . Rise of Skywalker is trailing with just $377 million, and this is the Big One, the ninth … [Read more...] about Nolte: 11 Ways Kathleen Kennedy Killed the ‘Star Wars’ Golden Goose
China Sanctions Pelosi, Ends Military Maritime Dialogue With US over House Speaker’s Taiwan Visit
Beijing on Friday announced that it has imposed sanctions on US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and her immediate family members. A Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson apprised state-run media outlet CGTN of the development. China further announced that it will cancel all ongoing dialogues between the Chinese and US military officials. China also has cancelled the China-US maritime safety dialogue. China says these are countermeasures for Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan. Since 1998, the Department of Defence and the People’s Republic of China’s (PRC) Ministry of National Defence have held meetings under the Military Maritime Consultative Agreement (MMCA) agreement. The aim of the talks is to – strengthen military maritime safety, improve operational safety in the air and sea, and reduce risk of miscalculation between the two militaries. The cancellation of the dialogue between both nuclear superpowers means that the relationship between Washington and Beijing has further deteriorated. … [Read more...] about China Sanctions Pelosi, Ends Military Maritime Dialogue With US over House Speaker’s Taiwan Visit

Army Undertakes Projects to Archive War Histories, Plans to Complete Them by April Next Year
The Army has undertaken two separate projects as part of its efforts towards archiving war histories, News18 has learnt. As per sources in the government, the projects have been initiated by the Army’s Training Command (ARTRAC). The Mhow-based Army War College will be the nodal authority for the projects and Delhi-based think tank United Services Institution of India (USI) will support the research work on the military history content as an expert body. The first project will include digitising and archiving the military history pertaining to the Army. While the digitisation process began in May this year, a government source told News18 that the project will be completed in two phases — the first for content that is declassified and then for unclassified content. Unclassified content refers to the one which was never classified. Declassified content was formerly classified, but the status was changed later. A Board of Officers (BOO) headed by a Major General rank officer in … [Read more...] about Army Undertakes Projects to Archive War Histories, Plans to Complete Them by April Next Year
China, Taiwan Warships Play High Seas ‘Cat and Mouse’ as End of War Drills Draw Nearer
Chinese and Taiwanese warships played high seas “cat and mouse” on Sunday ahead of the scheduled end of four days of unprecedented Chinese military exercises launched in reaction to a visit to Taiwan by US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. Pelosi’s visit last week infuriated China, which regards the self-ruled island as its territory and which responded with test launches of ballistic missiles over the island’s capital for the first time and the cutting of some areas of dialogue with Washington. About 10 warships each from China and Taiwan sailed at close quarters in the Taiwan Strait, with some Chinese vessels crossing the median line, an unofficial buffer separating the two sides, according to a person with knowledge of the matter. The island’s defence ministry said multiple Chinese military ships, aircraft, and drones were simulating attacks on the island and its navy. It said it had sent aircraft and ships to react “appropriately”. In a statement later on Sunday, the ministry … [Read more...] about China, Taiwan Warships Play High Seas ‘Cat and Mouse’ as End of War Drills Draw Nearer
End nuclear weapons before they end us | Opinion
In 1992, as a young captain in the Air Force, I co-taught a course on the making and use of the atomic bomb at the Air Force Academy. Before that, I'd served in Cheyenne Mountain, America's ultimate command post and bomb shelter in case of a nuclear war. There I once watched a military simulation tape that culminated in a nuclear missile attack on the U.S. by the Soviet Union. We all grew quiet as the missile tracks terminated at various American cities. We knew it was fake, but we also knew that millions of Americans would have been vaporized in a matter of minutes if the attack had been real. I learned a lot from teaching cadets about the atomic bomb. I'm haunted by the confession of J. Robert Oppenheimer, the "father of the atomic bomb," that he'd become death, the destroyer of worlds, after the first test of the "gadget" at the Trinity test site in Alamogordo, N.M. in July 1945. Next summer, Oppenheimer will be receiving the Hollywood treatment in a star-studded biopic directed … [Read more...] about End nuclear weapons before they end us | Opinion
Pink Floyd’s Roger Waters Brands Joe Biden a War Criminal: ‘He’s Fueling the Fire in the Ukraine’
Pink Floyd’s Roger Waters has labeled President Joe Biden a war criminal by including him in a montage of “war criminals” that the rock legend is showing on his current tour. In an interview Saturday with CNN, Roger Waters said Biden has committed a “huge crime” by not encouraging Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to negotiate with Russia to put an end to “this horrific, horrendous war.” “He’s fueling the fire in the Ukraine for a start. That is a huge crime. Why won’t the United States of America encourage Zelensky to negotiate, obviating the need for this horrific, horrendous war?” Waters said. CNN host Michael Smerconish defended Zelensky and Biden, saying the blame is all on Russia’s Vladimir Putin. Waters responded: “This war is basically about the action and reaction of NATO pushing right up to the Russian border which they promised they wouldn’t do.” Watch below: Roger Waters leveled a similar accusation against then-President Donald Trump during a … [Read more...] about Pink Floyd’s Roger Waters Brands Joe Biden a War Criminal: ‘He’s Fueling the Fire in the Ukraine’
Explosions near Crimea airfield could result in escalation of Ukraine war
If Ukraine is behind the series of explosions in the area of a Russian airbase in Crimea, it could result in an escalation in the war, which has been ongoing since Russia's invasion in late February, according to experts. Videos showed the blasts near the Saki airfield on Tuesday, and Russia's Defense Ministry said they were caused by detonated aviation ammunition, killing one and injuring several others, the Russian state-owned news agency RIA Novosti reported. But while Russia points away from an attack as the cause of the explosions, The New York Times reported that a senior Ukrainian military official with knowledge on the matter said that Ukraine was behind it. Newsweek was not able to independently verify the report that Ukraine was behind the blasts. Michael C. Kimmage, a professor and chair of the history department at the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C., told Newsweek that the war could "definitely" escalate if Ukraine was involved in the … [Read more...] about Explosions near Crimea airfield could result in escalation of Ukraine war
