Martin Lewis’ MSE warns millions of homes are missing out on £144 broadband saving
Martin Lewis ’ MoneySavingExpert website has warned that millions of homes could be missing out on lower broadband prices. The consumer rights website explained how more than four million people are eligible for so-called “social tariffs” - but only 1.2% of people have taken advantage of these deals. Broadband regulator Ofcom estimates that switching to one saves an average of £144 each year. “Social tariffs” are discounted deals normally available to low-income customers and people who claim benefits - although the exact eligibility criteria does vary between providers. As well as offering lower prices, these deals also typically don’t include any exit fees. “These social tariffs (except TalkTalk) have consistently low monthly costs, so are - for most who qualify - unbeatable price-wise if you want to stick with one provider for a number of years,“ explained the MoneySavingExpert team. FNC’s Carlson: ‘Inflation Reduction Act May Be a Classic Example of Misinformation’
Wednesday, FNC host Tucker Carlson opened his broadcast with a scathing critique of the so-called Inflation Reduction Act. According to Carlson, the moniker “inflation reduction” was misinformation, which has been something the Biden administration has proclaimed to be a priority in combatting. Transcript as follows: CARLSON: People say the federal government seems big, maybe bigger than ever. Well, it actually is the largest employer in the world — the Federal government. Nothing else comes close — not Google, not Amazon, not the Communist Party of China — nothing. How many people work for the United States government? Let’s put it this way. There are more than a hundred countries around the world whose total populations (that is, every man, woman and child) are smaller than our Federal workforce — entire countries, many of them. The US government, in other words, is astoundingly large, world historically big, scale without precedent, truly gargantuan. So, what do all … [Read more...] about FNC’s Carlson: ‘Inflation Reduction Act May Be a Classic Example of Misinformation’
The Health of the Nation: A Plea for Public Medicine
1. Many Americans do not receive adequate medical care. The figures presented by the Selective Service Examiners in 1942 and 1943 showed that throughout the United States 39.2 per cent of the registrants examined by the Local Boards and at the Induction Centers were rejected. This high percentage of our boys found unfit to fight was not evenly distributed throughout the country. For instance, in Oregon there were only 24.4 per cent rejected and in Kansas 25.4 per cent. On the other hand, in North Carolina 56.8 per cent were rejected and in Arkansas 55.9 per cent. Between these two extremes, Massachusetts and New York had 37.7 per cent rejected. Usually the poorer the state, the more neglect of health. Good medical care includes the activities of the public health services—Federal, state, and local—and the preventive medical procedures, diagnosis, and treatment for the sick provided by practicing physicians. Public health services vary not only from state to state, but also in … [Read more...] about The Health of the Nation: A Plea for Public Medicine
Indian Ocean talks about their past and their future
“If we had 11 fingers, our decimal system would start from there,” Nikhil Rao, Indian Ocean’s guitarist quips quite randomly, as we begin this interview. “Yes, but then we wouldn’t have a decimal system at all, no?” queries bassist Rahul Ram. Their manager has to step in and remind all in the room that this isn’t a video for a YouTube stand-up comedy group, but an interview with a newspaper. The cackling is cut short, but this gives us insight into the thought process of a band which changed the face of Indian music in the ‘90s. In Puducherry for the NH7 Weekender Express music festival, Indian Ocean is still a staple whenever the word indie is mentioned, despite a few turbulent years. Tabla player and vocalist Asheem Chakravarty passed away in 2009, and guitarist Susmit Sen quit in 2013 to focus on his solo work. “‘ Soch mat’ humaara school of thought hai ,” (‘Don’t think’ is our school of thought) Ram says, towards the beginning of their documentary film Leaving Home – the … [Read more...] about Indian Ocean talks about their past and their future
Student loan forgiveness is Left-wing trickle-down economics | Opinion
The Education Department wiped out $4 billion in student debt this week for over 200,000 borrowers. It was the second time the Biden administration eliminated student loans; they also forgave $6 billion in June, and extended a pandemic-era moratorium on student loan payments that began in March 2020. To the progressive camp, this is nowhere near enough. They have been pushing for full cancelation—of all student loans. "I still haven't heard a reason against student debt cancelation that isn't rooted in cruelty," tweeted progressive congressional candidate Nina Turner, expressing a view commonly expressed by progressives like Senator Bernie Sanders , Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez , and Senator Elizabeth Warren . "REMINDER—student debt is a tax on the poor and working poor who dared go to college to break the cycle of poverty!" Turner tweeted this week. But that's not what it looks like from where I'm sitting. I'm a blue-collar worker, and when I talk to … [Read more...] about Student loan forgiveness is Left-wing trickle-down economics | Opinion
For Mike Pence, Jan. 6 Began Like Many Days. It Ended Like No Other.
WASHINGTON — He started the day with a prayer. Vice President Mike Pence, preparing to withstand the final stage of a relentless campaign by President Donald J. Trump to force him to illegally try to overturn the results of the 2020 election, began Jan. 6, 2021, surrounded by aides at his official residence at the Naval Observatory, asking God for guidance. The group was expecting a difficult day. But what followed over the next 12 hours was more harrowing than they imagined. An angry mob with baseball bats and pepper spray chanting “hang Mike Pence” came within 40 feet of the vice president. Mr. Pence’s Secret Service detail had to hustle him to safety and hold him for nearly five hours in the bowels of the Capitol. Mr. Trump called Mr. Pence a “wimp” and worse in a coarse and abusive call that morning from the Oval Office, Mr. Trump’s daughter and former White House aides testified. And a confidential witness who traveled to Washington with the Proud Boys, the most … [Read more...] about For Mike Pence, Jan. 6 Began Like Many Days. It Ended Like No Other.
“I trained Rich Strike—this is how we won the Kentucky Derby’
I wouldn't be telling the truth if I said I expected Rich Strike to win the Kentucky Derby. I hadn't ruled it out because I knew there were a lot of intangibles, but I knew it would have to be the perfect scenario. My true goal was to finish 10th or better and beat half the field. And if Rich Strike finished last, so be it. We took a chance. Rich Strike had won a race at Churchill Downs racetrack in September 2021 and had come third at Keeneland in October. That was when we started thinking we had a really good horse to race; that's when it really all began. Rich Strike, or Richie as I call him, is a "people horse." He loves attention and he loves being petted. My daughter gives him baby carrots; he probably eats a pound or two of those a day, and he's a kind horse. He's so much fun. But we realized he was starting to wake up. Training a Kentucky Derby winner Richie had tons of talent, he'd won a race and tried hard enough, but for some reason he didn't have that "killer … [Read more...] about “I trained Rich Strike—this is how we won the Kentucky Derby’
A Space in Time
In the evenings, when my particular piece of Earth has turned away from the Sun, and is exposed instead to the rest of the cosmos, I sit in front of a keyboard, log on, and seek out the windows that look down at the planets and out at the stars. It's a markedly different experience from looking at reproductions on paper. What I see is closer to the source. In fact, it's indistinguishable from the source. These are images that have never registered on a negative. Like the Internet itself, they are products of a digitized era. Over the past couple of years I've been monitoring the long rectangular strips of Martian surface being beamed across the void, in a steady stream of zeroes and ones, from the umbrella-shaped high-gain antenna of the Mars Global Surveyor spacecraft. These pictures are so fresh that their immediacy practically crackles. Call it "chrono-clarity." That bluish wispy cloud, for example, hovering over the Hecates Tholus volcano, which rears above the pockmarked surface … [Read more...] about A Space in Time
