At more than 34 miles long, the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge is part of a master plan to create a global science and technology hub by connecting two Chinese territories, Hong Kong and Macau (the world's largest gambling center), to nine nearby cities. With an economic output of $1.5 trillion, the new mega-region — known as the Greater Bay Area — is positioned to rival Silicon Valley. The plan also includes the construction of an $11 billion bullet train, which opened in September. The bridge is not open to public transit, so only certain vehicles — shuttles, freight cars, and private cars with permits — are allowed to cross. Pedestrians and bicyclists are prohibited. While some have criticized the … [Read more...] about China just opened the world’s longest sea bridge. It cost $20 billion and is 20 times as long as the Golden Gate Bridge.

HONG KONG -- The world's longest sea bridge is now officially open for traffic in China. It took almost a decade to build the Hong Kong–Zhuhai–Macau Bridge (HZMB), which spans 34 miles connecting Hong Kong and Macau to mainland China. It could cut travel time between certain cities from about 3 hours to 30 minutes. But many in Hong Kong don't see this bridge as a good thing. They view it as the Chinese government tightening its grip on the former British colony, reports CBS News correspondent Ben Tracy. The official opening of the HZMB is a major achievement for China and its president, Xi Jinping. Building the Hong Kong–Zhuhai–Macau Bridge was one of the most challenging and costly infrastructure projects in the world. It spans China's Pearl River Delta, connecting Hong Kong, the gambling mecca of Macau and nine other cities in southern China with nearly 70 million people. The bridge is made of more than 400,000 tons of steel. It's as long as nearly 20 … [Read more...] about Hong Kong residents see world’s longest sea bridge as infrastructure propaganda from China
The world’s longest sea crossing has been inaugurated (Source: AFP)The 55-kilometre crossing, which includes a snaking road bridge and underwater tunnel, opened to traffic at 9am local time on October 24th, linking Hong Kong with the southern mainland city of Zhuhai and the gambling enclave of Macau, across the waters of the Pearl River Estuary. The bridge has been under construction for the past nine years, costs about USD20 billion and includes two artificial islands. China’s Vice Premier Han Zheng said the bridge would help drive China's strategic blueprint for a "Greater Bay Area" around the Pearl River Delta, modeled on other global economic dynamos like San Francisco bay and Tokyo bay. "The bridge stimulates interaction and trade between Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macau, facilitates the development of the Greater Bay Area and boosts the comprehensive competitiveness of the Pearl River Delta," Han said. The bridge’s opening also comes a month after the … [Read more...] about China inaugurates world’s longest sea crossing

World China has officially opened the longest sea-crossing bridge in the world in its southern city of Zhuhai, connecting mainland China to Hong Kong and Macau. The 34-mile road bridge has been under construction for almost nine years and is a central element of Beijing’s project to link what it calls its Greater Bay Area, the BBC reported. The Greater Bay Area will cover 21,800 square miles and encompass 11 cities and some 68 million people in mainland China and the semi-autonomous provinces of Hong Kong and Macau. President Xi Jinping inaugurated the $20 billion bridge, telling hundreds of guests: “I declare the Hong Kong-Macau-Zhuhai bridge officially open.” The structure, which snakes over the vast Pearl River Delta, will be opened to regular traffic for the first time on Wednesday. The new link comprises 400,000 tons of steel—more than four times the amount used for San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge, according to CNN.
