Talks on a trade deal between the UK and six Gulf nations that could boost the UK economy by up to £1.6 billion a year will kick off on Wednesday with a meeting in Saudi Arabia. Trade Secretary Anne-Marie Trevelyan will meet representatives of the Gulf Co-operation Council (GCC) in Riyadh to begin negotiations on a deal with the bloc. Trade between the UK and the GCC – which includes Bahrain, Kuwait , Oman , Qatar , Saudi Arabia and the UAE – is already worth £33.1 billion, making it the UK’s seventh largest trading partner, and the bloc’s demand for international goods and services is expected to increase 35% in the next 13 years. Ms Trevelyan said: “This trade deal has the potential to support jobs from Dover to Doha, growing our economy at home, building vital green industries and supplying innovative services to the growth.” But Paul Nowak, deputy general secretary of the Trades Union Congress, warned against the move on account of the Gulf states’ … [Read more...] about UK to begin negotiations for improved trade deal with Gulf states

Polestar Sends its Electric Polestar 5 Grand Tourer Up Hill at Goodwood
Polestar is giving the public a glimpse of its future by showing off a development prototype of the Polestar 5 at the 2022 Goodwood Festival of Speed this week. The all-electric grand touring sedan is the latest iteration of the Polestar Precept concept that was first unveiled in 2020. "Polestar 5 is shaping up to be a superb 4-door GT and a true Polestar at heart," Polestar UK head of R&D Pete Allen said in a press release. "The platform combines low-volume performance car attributes with modern technological advances to bring light-weight, high-rigidity sports car chassis technology into mass production." It features a lightweight aluminum chassis, with the styling of a grand touring car. Eschewing the boxy design of the Polestar 2 sedan, the 5 opts for a more rounded approach, with boomerang headlights and thin tail lights at the edges of the car. Counterhinged "suicide" doors were featured on the Precept concept, which doesn't seem to appear on the 5. But what … [Read more...] about Polestar Sends its Electric Polestar 5 Grand Tourer Up Hill at Goodwood
Arizona wildfires gut observatory buildings, endanger artifacts
In the latest example of the expanding reach of wildfires, a trio of blazes in Arizona has gutted several buildings at a national observatory, forced the evacuation of a historical monument and threatened other archaeological artifacts. Days after a fire broke out southwest of Tucson, its flames crept up to Kitt Peak National Observatory on Friday and threatened several telescopes. The blaze went on to consume four non-research buildings, including a dormitory and other support structures, and observatory officials said the full extent of damage to the complex may not be known for weeks. Two other wildfires are burning near Flagstaff, an area that is home to thousands of years' worth of archaeological artifacts. Both the flames and the tools used to suppress the blaze threaten those historical remnants, which include several heritage sites and national monuments. Wildfires in Arizona have become increasingly powerful in recent decades, posing an increased threat to areas where … [Read more...] about Arizona wildfires gut observatory buildings, endanger artifacts
Why Tucker Carlson Should Want the Buffalo Manifesto Made Public
The alleged teenage mass shooter in Buffalo, New York, wrote and posted a 180-page manifesto. I read the whole thing, and the only part that surprised me was the banality of his stated intention to eat “corn beef hash” for breakfast, followed by lunch at McDonald’s, before killing as many Black people as possible. He expects to go to prison and either die there or someday be freed as a hero, after white people fight back en masse against the attempt to “replace” them in the lands where they live. Committing what he calls “an act of terrorism” is his method of warning all non-white people to “leave [white territory] while you still can, as long as the White man lives you will never be safe here.” My friends in the terrorism-analysis community engaged in preemptive scolding as news of the manifesto came out. “Don’t post the fuckin manifesto anywhere,” tweeted Amarnath Amarasingam, a professor at Queen’s University in Canada. “Folks in our field: You should read the manifesto,” Seamus … [Read more...] about Why Tucker Carlson Should Want the Buffalo Manifesto Made Public
