Alexander Zverev slipped two places to 16th in the new ATP rankings released on Monday while Novak Djokovic edged closer to Steffi Graf’s all-time record for most weeks at number one. The 25-year-old Zverev was ranked second at the end of August but is still on the comeback trail after tearing ankle ligaments during last year’s French Open which kept him out of action for the remainder of the year. Amid Crises, Biden Offers the World a Choice: My Way, or Trump’s
BALI, Indonesia — President Biden returns home from a week of diplomacy and crisis management in the Middle East and Asia strengthened in his faith that this period of war and economic turmoil calls for his brand of coalition-building politics — reinforcing the leadership differences with his predecessor, Donald J. Trump, just as he announced another White House run on Tuesday. Mr. Biden’s swing through Egypt, Cambodia and Indonesia was buoyed by a cascade of better-than-expected news for Democrats in the midterm elections and punctuated by a nearly three-hour meeting with China’s top leader, Xi Jinping, that appeared to ease the rancorous rhetoric between the two increasingly rivalrous economies, the world’s largest. As reports emerged of Russian-made rockets killing two people in Poland, Mr. Biden convened an emergency meeting with NATO and Group of 7 leaders over the latest missile strikes in Russia’s war in Ukraine, declining to speculate on the source until more facts were … [Read more...] about Amid Crises, Biden Offers the World a Choice: My Way, or Trump’s

IS ‘Beatle’ Cell Members to Face Trial in UK on Terror Charges
An alleged member of the Islamic State (IS) group’s ‘Beatles’ kidnap-and-murder cell will face trial in the UK this month on terrorism charges, a judge said on Monday. Aine Davis is accused of belonging to the notorious group of hostage-takers, who grew up and were radicalised in London. Active in Syria from 2012 to 2015, they were allegedly involved in abducting more than two dozen journalists and relief workers from the United States and other countries. The group members were nicknamed the “Beatles" by their captives because of their distinctive British accents. The hostages, some of whom were released after their governments paid ransoms, were from at least 15 countries, including Denmark, France, Japan, Norway, Spain and the United States. The IS tortured and killed their victims, including by beheading and releasing videos of the murders for propaganda purposes. Davis, 38, will go on trial on February 27 at the Old Bailey criminal court in London, judge Mark Lucraft … [Read more...] about IS ‘Beatle’ Cell Members to Face Trial in UK on Terror Charges
French parliament debates Macron’s divisive pension bill
PARIS (AP) — France’s parliament on Monday started debating a fiercely contested pension bill that’s triggered recent strikes and large street demonstrations, with more protests set to come this week. The lower house, the National Assembly, began debating the plans that would raise the minimum retirement age from 62 to 64. The parliamentary session comes one day before Tuesday’s third round of protests called by eight main workers’ unions, with more demonstrations planned Saturday. French President Emmanuel Macron’s government is now facing a harsh political battle at parliament that could span weeks or months. Macron vowed to go ahead with the changes – his second presidential term’s flagship legislation — which he described last week as “indispensable when you compare to (other countries) in Europe.” Faced with opinion polls repeatedly showing that a growing majority of people are against the reform, and his own popularity shrinking, Macron argues that it was a key electoral … [Read more...] about French parliament debates Macron’s divisive pension bill
Shiffrin’s Beijing lesson helps after another big-race DNF
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 12 MERIBEL, France (AP) — Practically the only person not asking Mikaela Shiffrin if this was the Beijing Olympics all over again was herself. That’s because the American skier learned so much from that disappointing performance a year ago when she didn’t finish three of her five individual races and didn’t win a medal amid enormous expectations. She was able to quickly compartmentalize another DNF — “Did Not Finish” in skiing lingo — on Monday in the opening race of the world championships. This time, Shiffrin straddled the third-to-last gate in the slalom portion of the combined race, ending what had appeared destined to be a gold-medal winning run. “Everyone’s going to ask, ‘Oh is this Beijing again?’” she said. “I didn’t really think about that for myself, but more for the people asking. “But I also said before coming into … [Read more...] about Shiffrin’s Beijing lesson helps after another big-race DNF
The life and crimes of the Holocaust mastermind
Eichmann: His Life and Crimes The trial of Adolf Eichmann made him the global face of the Holocaust . But his exact role in the atrocities remained buried by courtroom rhetoric, sloppy reporting or overly ideological analysis. To some, he was a classic Nazi: a depraved, criminal, socially inadequate über bully. Others saw a bureaucrat made into a mass murderer by totalitarianism, who counted Jews instead of beans. This gripping, lucid, meticulously researched book reveals that both views are wrong. David Cesarani shows there was nothing in Eichmann's relatively comfortable childhood and youth to indicate any lack of sociability. As an adult, he was garrulous and popular. After a hard day in his Berlin office organising mass deportations in 1943, the handsome, charming, popular SS officer would go to musical soirees with his staff. The question of when the Nazis decided to exterminate Europe's Jews is much debated. The Wannsee conference in Berlin in January 1942, at which … [Read more...] about The life and crimes of the Holocaust mastermind
