HUNDREDS of young drivers are stopped from getting behind the wheel every year because of failing eyesight. Licences were refused or revoked from nearly 500 under-25s last year for eye-related conditions. Motorists are prevented from driving if they can’t read a number plate from 20 metres away. Figures from the DVLA show 7,000 people across all age groups were, in effect, banned from driving last year because of defective eyes. Nearly 800 of those who were stopped from going on the road were in their 90s. More than 35,000 wannabe drivers have been stopped from driving a car or motorbike since 2013 owing to failing sight. Three police forces are now testing the eyesight of every motorist who they stop. Police have launched a crackdown on drivers with poor vision to address road safety concerns. POLICE are to give roadside eye tests to drivers they pull over. Thames Valley, Hampshire and West Midlands forces will ask them to read a number plate from 20 metres. Both want a compulsory eye test when licences are renewed every ten years. The DVLA has launched an awareness campaign calling on drivers to test whether they can see a number plate from 20 metres away. The “number plate test” reflects the legal distance from which all motorists should be able to read a sign. It comes as a DVLA survey indicated less than half of drivers knew that 20 metres was the legal limit for sight. Five car lengths is said to roughly match the distance and road users are being encouraged to use the measure to test their vision on passing signs.
