KOTA KINABALU: Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor ( pic ) says the state government is “deeply concerned” with the arrest of Parti Perpaduan Rakyat Sabah president for allegedly being the brains behind an identification document scam syndicate. He told the authorities not to leave any stone unturned in the investigations of the case. “If found to be true, the suspect and his syndicate members must face the full brunt of the law,” said Hajiji a statement. Home Minister Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin in a press conference in Bukit Aman said the politician, identified as Mohd Arshad Abdul Mualap, 48, was detained along with another man - Mohamad Amkah Ahmad, 46, - in Subang Jaya on June 22. They were charged in court on Thursday (June 30). Hamzah said the authorities believed the syndicate had been operating for several months now, adding they were selling invalid ICs to those without Malaysian citizenship. Sonny Barger, biker outlaw and founder of Hells Angels, dies at 83
Sonny Barger, the bigger-than-life godfather of the Hells Angels Motorcycle Club, equal parts brawler, bully, braggart, rule breaker and shrewd huckster of his own outlaw mystique, has died at 83. A statement on his official Facebook page read: "If you are reading this message, you'll know that I'm gone. I've asked that this note be posted immediately after my passing." The cause, according to the statement, was cancer, but no other details were immediately available. For decades, the stocky, muscular Barger stood not only as the founder of the original Oakland, Calif., Angels chapter in 1957, but for decades after that also as the public face of a nationwide counterculture tribe of bearded, denim-clad road warriors memorialized in literature and film - roaring down the open highway and through crossroads towns, shocking the locals with their boisterous, often menacing presence. It was a rowdy, frequently lawless brotherhood bound, in no particular order, by machismo, tattoos, … [Read more...] about Sonny Barger, biker outlaw and founder of Hells Angels, dies at 83
Ligue 1: Sans Lionel Messi, PSG Beat Montpellier 2-0 for 8th Straight Win
French league leader Paris Saint-Germain relied on early and late goals to beat Montpellier 2-0 on Saturday and make it eight straight wins. Midfielder Idrissa Gueye scored in the 14th minute at Parc des Princes. Striker Kylian Mbappe’s intended pass for Neymar was deflected and landed at the feet of winger Angel Di Maria, who passed quickly to Gueye for his neat finish. Substitute Julian Draxler had been on briefly when he met a sideways pass from Neymar, and slotted the ball through goalkeeper Jonas Omlin’s legs from the right of the penalty area in the 88th. PSG was again without superstar Lionel Messi, who has missed two games with a sore knee and is trying to get match fit for Tuesday’s Champions League game against Manchester City. Midfielder Ander Herrera hit the crossbar for PSG with a 20-meter strike shortly before the break. English forward Stephy Mavididi went close to equalizing for Montpellier in the 62nd but standout goalkeeper Keylor Navas kept out his curling … [Read more...] about Ligue 1: Sans Lionel Messi, PSG Beat Montpellier 2-0 for 8th Straight Win
How To Determine If (And When) Your Brand Should Comment On Social Or Political Issues
I know this may be an unpopular opinion, but I think many brands have crept too far into the political arena and have pigeonholed themselves when it comes to supporting broader socio-political issues. We are in a time that I feel cries out for unity, not division, and every individual and brand should do its part to mend this divide rather than magnify it. While there have been several defining moments that put both political and social justice issues front and center (e.g., the Black Lives Matter movement following the acquittal of George Zimmerman in the Trayvon Martin case in 2013 and the more recent COVID-19 pandemic that resulted in mask and vaccine mandates), I've seen many publicly and privately held companies miscalculate if and when they should leverage their social followings and brand reach to shed light on particular issues. Recent research actually highlights this issue. A new study ( via EurekAlert ) found that people who receive gift cards are less appreciative of … [Read more...] about How To Determine If (And When) Your Brand Should Comment On Social Or Political Issues
Exiled in Abu Dhabi, Mohammed Dahlan Dreams of Gaza
World Hamas Gaza Palestine Liberation Organization Israel No place in the Arab world could be more different from the Gaza Strip than Abu Dhabi. The affluent emirate on the Gulf has shimmering skyscrapers, a Grand Prix racetrack and its own Louvre . Yet Mohammed Dahlan, the 53-year-old Gaza native and exiled political leader, seems comfortable here. His home is a glossy mingling of marble and glass, with chandeliers hanging from high ceilings and framed paintings on the walls. On a sunny winter day recently, he worked in his garden dressed in jeans and soft loafers, then greeted me on his waterfront patio. But for all its luxuriousness, Abu Dhabi is only temporary, Dahlan says—a staging area where he now plots his comeback. He's lived in this city for four years, ever since Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas expelled him from the governing Fatah party and charged him with corruption and defamation. The rift between them cut short a political career that seemed … [Read more...] about Exiled in Abu Dhabi, Mohammed Dahlan Dreams of Gaza
NEWS18 EXPLAINS: Can Netanyahu Regain Israel’s Premiership?
Israel called a November election on Thursday after Prime Minister Naftali Bennett stepped aside and parliament was dissolved, while former premier Benjamin Netanyahu promised he would return to power. Here is a quick look at why Israel is holding yet another election and what the chances are of a Netanyahu comeback: HOW DID WE GET HERE … AGAIN? Bennett and his partner Yair Lapid, who at midnight will assume the role of caretaker prime minister, took power last June, ending the record 12-year tenure of Netanyahu along with almost three years of political stalemate. Bennett and Lapid wrangled up a broad range of hard-right, liberal and Arab parties into a government, but they lost their narrow majority to defections in recent weeks. Rather than wait for the opposition, led by Netanyahu, to vote them out, they moved to dissolve parliament and triggered the country’s fifth election in less than four years. IS A NETANYAHU COMEBACK IN THE CARDS? Perhaps. It’s unclear whether the … [Read more...] about NEWS18 EXPLAINS: Can Netanyahu Regain Israel’s Premiership?
Netanyahu Cancels UN Deal on African Migrants in Shock Reversal
Jerusalem: Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu cancelled an agreement with the UN refugee agency on Tuesday aimed at avoiding forced deportations of thousands of African migrants only hours after having announced the deal himself. The stunning turnaround after Netanyahu announced the accord in a televised address on Monday afternoon came as he faced mounting pressure from his right-wing base. The UN refugee agency urged Netanyahu to reconsider. Yesterday's announcement drew immediate anger from right-wing politicians, including Netanyahu allies, and many of his traditional supporters. After the deluge of criticism, the premier said in a late-night Facebook post on Monday he was suspending the agreement that would have allowed thousands of the migrants to remain in Israel at least temporarily. Today, he said the deal was being cancelled outright after having held discussions on it. "After having heard numerous comments on the agreement, I have examined the pros and cons … [Read more...] about Netanyahu Cancels UN Deal on African Migrants in Shock Reversal
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to Visit India on September 9, to Hold Talks with PM Modi
Jerusalem: Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will travel to India on a day-long visit on September 9 to meet his counterpart Narendra Modi, just eight days before unprecedented repeat polls in the Jewish state. Netanyahu, who created history on July 20 by becoming the longest-serving Israeli Prime Minister, surpassing Israel's first premier David Ben-Gurion, is facing a tough political challenge as opinion polls show flagging fortunes for his ruling Likud party. "The (Israeli) Prime Minister will be in India only for a few hours on September 9 during which he will be meeting Modi. No other significant meeting is yet on the cards but something may be worked out during the coming days, possibly a business meeting," informed sources told PTI here. Israeli lawmakers in May voted 74-45 in favour of dissolving the 21st Knesset (Parliament) and hold an unprecedented repeat general elections on September 17 after Netanyahu failed to form a coalition government. Some analysts … [Read more...] about Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to Visit India on September 9, to Hold Talks with PM Modi
