Steven Sadri often recalls a recurring problem from years ago when he lived in Nob Hill. Whenever he needed high-quality Mexican products, he often struggled to find them nearby. Once Sadri and his wife, Emily Sadri, started thinking about San Francisco’s cityscape, they realized that it lacked a Mexican specialty store. “Why isn't there a place to pick up fresh heirloom masa made in Oaxaca? Why isn't there a place to pick up hand-pressed flour tortillas? These were questions we wanted to answer,” Steven said. So they created their own store. The couple founded Tahona Mercado at the corner of Leavenworth and Sacramento streets last August. Since opening the Mexicatessen, Tahona Mercado has stayed true to its ethos of presenting a curated list of Mexican foods made by small, local Bay Area businesses, as well as imported goods from south of the border. Ryan Reynolds surprises fan with 100 signed copies of movies
Ryan Reynolds has surprised a DVD shop owner and lifelong fan with more than 100 signed copies of the Hollywood star's own movies. Movie buff Rob Clarke, 45, who runs Mad4Movies, in Wrexham, Wales, couldn't believe it when he got a message from the Deadpool actor on Twitter . Clarke met Wrexham co-owner Reynolds last year while he was in town filming the Welcome to Wrexham documentary, set to air on Disney+ this month. Clarke said he and his wife Blake Lively had been clearing out their office when they found the haul of old movies, and thought Rob might like them for his shop. Clarke thought the message was a hoax at first until his wife Carrie, 38, told him it was real. The haul of 103 movies are all movies Reynolds and Lively have starred in, including Deadpool 2 , The Age Of Adaline , The Rhythm Section and The Voices . Steve Bannon attacks Mike Pence for defending FBI: “Gutless”
Right-wing strategist and podcaster Steve Bannon attacked former Vice President Mike Pence after he defended the FBI in the wake of the raid on former President Donald Trump 's Florida residence last week. Pence on Wednesday in New Hampshire urged fellow Republicans to stop their condemnation of federal law enforcement, as some GOP lawmakers have called for defunding or abolishing the FBI after the search warrant was executed at Trump's Mar-a-Lago resort home on August 8. "Our party stands with the men and women who stand on the thin blue line at the federal and state and local level, and these attacks on the FBI must stop. Calls to defund the FBI are just as wrong as calls to defund the police," Pence said. Bannon, who served as the chief executive officer of Trump's 2016 presidential campaign and for much of 2017 as a White House strategist, quickly lashed out at Pence in a Wednesday episode of his War Room podcast. He described the former No. 2 Trump … [Read more...] about Steve Bannon attacks Mike Pence for defending FBI: “Gutless”
Russia sends jets with hypersonic missiles to NATO borders for 24/7 duty
Russia has reportedly sent three planes with hypersonic missiles to an exclave between two NATO members for around-the-clock combat duty amid fears of war between the alliance and President Vladimir Putin 's army. Russia's Defense Ministry said Thursday that the MiG-31 aircraft are now based at the Chkalovsk airfield in the Kaliningrad region "as part of the implementation of additional strategic deterrence measures," Russian state-owned news agency Ria Novosti reported. That means the planes, equipped with their Kinzhal hypersonic missiles, are now close to NATO borders. Kaliningrad , which does not share any borders with Russia but is still part of its territory, is sandwiched between NATO countries Poland and Lithuania. Putin hasn't publicly voiced plans to attack NATO, but he has warned that any countries that "create a strategic threat to Russia" during the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war can expect "retaliatory strikes." Russian state television and the Russian … [Read more...] about Russia sends jets with hypersonic missiles to NATO borders for 24/7 duty
Turkey’s Erdogan jostles to be Putin’s partner, Ukraine peacemaker
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan heads to Ukraine Thursday as the most likely peacemaker in a war that has pitted NATO and the European Union firmly against Russia. Erdogan and United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres will meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in the western city of Lviv, with the nascent UN-Turkish-facilitated Black Sea grain export deal likely top of the agenda. The Turkish president may also be carrying a message from Russian President Vladimir Putin , who he met in the Black Sea resort town of Sochi earlier this month. Erdogan—now needed by both Ukraine and Russia—may yet play a key role in any eventual ceasefire, though for now an end to the fighting looks unlikely. In the meantime Erdogan—ambitious, opportunistic, and pragmatic—will deal with both sides, seeking to stabilize its region, its beleaguered economy, and grow its international influence. "Turkey is trying to find a middle road," said Fatih Ceylan, … [Read more...] about Turkey’s Erdogan jostles to be Putin’s partner, Ukraine peacemaker
