When Zak Shafi was growing up, his family did everything they could to make ends meet. The 23-year-old had no idea how short of cash they were until a classmate spotted his school trousers on the changing room hook in PE and noticed he was wearing girls' uniform - and started to bully him. He tells The Mirror: "I went to school at Wembley High, it was a state school, it improved massively during my time there but to begin with I think it used to be one of the worst performing schools in the country. It wasn't all that at all. A lot of my clothes growing up came from my family, they were passed down to me, little did I know there was a difference between girls' and boys' trousers - the boys had buttons on the back pockets and the girls didn't. "One day in PE one of the guys asked who was wearing girls' trousers as they were hanging up, and I thought it couldn't be me - but it was. I asked my parents why I was wearing girls' trousers - they always did their best but they said they … [Read more...] about ‘I was so poor I had to wear girls’ clothes to school – now I live life of luxury’

Delhi govt. alleges corruption in decision by former L-G; seeks CBI probe
Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia on Saturday alleged “corruption” by the office of the former Lieutenant-Governor, which brought a change in the Delhi Excise Policy 2021-22 without consulting the government, causing huge revenue loss to the exchequer and windfall gains to some vendors. He sought a CBI investigation into the matter and alleged the role of BJP leaders in the “corruption”. Mr. Sisodia, who also holds the Excise portfolio, said, “Under the policy [Delhi Excise Policy 2021-22], it was said that liquor vends will also open in unauthorised colonies; there was no opposition [from the L-G] and it was passed. On November 15 [last year], two days before vends were supposed to open, the L-G put a new condition that liquor vends in unauthorised colonies should have permission from the Delhi Development Authority and the Municipal Corporation of Delhi,” Mr. Sisodia said. Why a Black ‘Annie’ Is So Significant
"It's the hard knock life for us ... 'Stead of kisses/We get kicked! As millions of moviegoers sit down in front of the same few studio films playing at their local theater over the holidays, the handful of Hollywood creators behind those projects will have that still-rare power: the undivided attention of much of the country. In communities of all kinds, audiences young and old, of various backgrounds, will gather to consume the artistic vision of a select few people. In this way, a single film, whether it’s transporting millions to different worlds, pushing them to explore the depths of their own feelings, or imagining the assassination of a world leader , can still have an enormous influence on culture. The ability to keep our attention in a dark theater for two hours or so means films can teach people things, often without them knowing. Perhaps most exciting is film's ability to teach empathy—by placing audiences so deeply in the shoes of another. Researchers have … [Read more...] about Why a Black ‘Annie’ Is So Significant

The fight for fiscal autonomy
In a recent debate between Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and Opposition MPs on price rise, Ms. Sitharaman said the States should do more, ignoring the fact that the reduced fiscal autonomy of the States gives them little leeway to do much. Similarly, the increasing reliance of the Union government on indirect taxes such as the GST has directly contributed to price rise and inequality. But despite reduced fiscal autonomy, States such as Tamil Nadu and Kerala have contained price rise and inflation through targeted interventions. Growing inequality Adam Smith had argued that taxation per se is not bad, but should follow the principles of fairness. Fairness, in taxation, should be compatible with taxpayers’ conditions, including their ability to pay in line with their personal and family needs. However, the Union government’s increasing dependence on indirect taxes has removed any ‘fairness’ in taxation. The share of indirect taxes of the gross tax revenue in FY2019 … [Read more...] about The fight for fiscal autonomy
Missouri voters set to weigh in on recreational marijuana
COLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) — A campaign to legalize recreational marijuana in Missouri gathered enough signatures to make it on the November ballot, Republican Secretary of State Jay Ashcroft announced Tuesday. If voters approve the constitutional amendment on marijuana, those age 21 and older could buy and grow it for personal consumption as early as this year. “We look forward to engaging with voters across the state in the coming weeks and months," LegalMo22 campaign manager John Payne said. "Missourians are more than ready to end the senseless and costly prohibition of marijuana.” Missouri voters approved medical marijuana use in 2018. Efforts to allow recreational marijuana use have failed to pass Missouri's Republican-led Legislature for years, prompting advocates to go to voters for approval instead. Recreational marijuana is already legal in 19 states, and legalization proposals are on the ballot this fall in South Dakota and Maryland. Supporters are also trying to get … [Read more...] about Missouri voters set to weigh in on recreational marijuana
