Returning home Thursday from a whirlwind three-day summit with Kim Jong Un, beaming South Korean President Moon Jae-in said the North Korean leader wants the U.S. secretary of state to visit Pyongyang soon for nuclear talks, hoping for a quick follow-up to his June summit with President Donald Trump. Only hours after standing with Kim on the peak of a volcano that is at the heart of Kim dynasty propaganda, Moon told reporters in Seoul he will be carrying a private message from Kim to Trump about the nuclear standoff when he meets the U.S. president in New York next week on the sidelines of the U.N. General Assembly session. Both Trump, who has repeatedly spoken of his good relationship with Kim, and the North Korean leader have expressed a desire to follow up on the June meeting in Singapore that was meant to settle an impasse that seemed to be edging toward war last year. But there are worries among observers about whether Kim is as committed to denuclearization as he … [Read more...] about South Korea’s Moon Bringing Kim’s Private Message to Trump

CNN: Barr-Mueller Relationship Giving Trump Pause
William Barr's 30-year relationship with special counsel Robert Mueller has given President Donald Trump pause, according to three people who spoke with CNN. Barr, the president's pick to replace Jeff Sessions at the helm of the Justice Department, on Tuesday during his Senate confirmation hearing said he and Mueller "were good friends and would be good friends when this was all over," referring to Mueller's probe into Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election. Barr and Mueller first met at the Justice Department during the George H. W. Bush administration. Their wives are close friends who attend bible study together, per Politico, and Mueller was in attendance for the weddings of two of Barr's daughters. "I have known Bob Mueller for 30 years," Barr said. "We worked closely together throughout my previous tenure at the Department of Justice under President Bush. We've been friends since. And I have the utmost respect for Bob and his distinguished record of public … [Read more...] about CNN: Barr-Mueller Relationship Giving Trump Pause
Mr. President: Here’s why Mount Vernon isn’t named Mount Washington
By The Washington Post | April 10, 2019 at 4:59 pm By Gillian Brockell | Washington Post President Donald Trump was not impressed with a tour of the first commander in chief’s home last year, Politico reported Wednesday, describing his visit to Mount Vernon with French President Emmanuel Macron and their wives as “truly bizarre.” “If he was smart, he would’ve put his name on it,” Trump reportedly said. “You’ve got to put your name on stuff or no one remembers you.” On the subject of whether anyone remembers George Washington, The Washington Post, which is based in the capital city of Washington (not Washington state) near George Washington University, would refer readers to the fact that Washington has come in first or second in nearly every “best presidents” poll conducted, including the most recent one, in 2018, by Siena College Research Institute. Trump, in case you’re wondering, came in 42nd out of 45 … [Read more...] about Mr. President: Here’s why Mount Vernon isn’t named Mount Washington
War of Wives: Why You Shouldn’t Be Shocked by The Cruz-Trump Fight
Doug Wead is a presidential historian who served as senior advisor to the Ron Paul presidential campaign in 2012, and was special assistant to President George H.W. Bush.In 1988 I received a call from my boss Lee Atwater. He was the George H.W. Bush campaign manager and he had a strange request. “Hey Wead,” Atwater said, “Get the word out. Kitty Dukakis has the clap.”Kitty Dukakis was the wife of our Democrat opponent, Governor Michael Dukakis of Massachusetts. She did not have a venereal disease. Spreading the rumor was an Atwater device to force her husband to release his medical records. It’s an old story that is now told in history books and Atwater made a deathbed apology to the Dukakis family but it came to mind when I saw the Cruz-Trump feud flare out into the open last week. Notwithstanding the television pundits who tell you that this is a new low, attacks on the opponent’s wife and children in the middle of a … [Read more...] about War of Wives: Why You Shouldn’t Be Shocked by The Cruz-Trump Fight
Trump is About to Release His ‘Religious Freedom’ Order, and It’s Looking Awful
The First Amendment guarantees religious freedom as a core American value: “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof.”For a good long time, those words were interpreted to mean that the government can’t regulate what people are allowed to believe. Of course, the government can regulate how people behave, as long as it’s even-handed in that regulation. So, for example, bigamy can be prohibited, as long as the law applies to everybody and isn’t specifically targeted at Mormons with sister wives. This system makes good sense, because otherwise, any criminal could defend his or her behavior by simply saying the commission of the crime was essential to some religious practice.Fast-forward to the 1960s. Post-Civil Rights Movement, the legal interpretation of “religious freedom” widened. SCOTUS issued some rulings that permitted people to break laws when those laws directly … [Read more...] about Trump is About to Release His ‘Religious Freedom’ Order, and It’s Looking Awful
